Senior Class Poem Do you all remember the boy named Walt? To every party, he'll add some salt. He rods to Kewanee in his big, black Line To see a girl named Rosie. . .1 think! Next on our list is a gal named Sue, She likes Jack; he likes her, too. And someday soon upon her hand. She hopes to wear his wedding band. And now marches on the stage, Bruce Heise. . .he’s quite the rage. Sometimes we call him Lib for short, (When he reads this, just watch him snort!) Ed belongs to the National Guard, This blond-headed boy is quite a card. Souped-up Fords are his favorite car; In life, we think he'll travel far. Being the shortest in the class, Jerry hopes that he will pass. He thinks that History is for the birds. To him, it is just a bunch of words. Howard likes a girl in the Junior class, Nancy Thorp. . .she's quite a lass. They both have bright red hair. You'd better look out when their tempers flare. Next is the boy whose name is Bill, Dawn is the girl who gives him a thrill. For Kewanee he is often bound, Can't you guess where he'll be found? Stanley drives a big, black Plym, The girls all seem to chase after him, As quarter-back of our football team, You can bet that he was on the beam. Joan chose Jotze as her pen name. Writing for this mouse has made her fame. She has many friends. . .far and near. They like her because she's full of cheer. Richard Redenius is his name. Being a lawyer is his aim. He's the tops in our class, Roddin' around. . .he burns up gas. Marlene was the Homecoming queen, In her pink formal she really looked keen. She's the life of every party, When she leaves we'll all be sorry. Carol Krahn is quite a dish. She has a very peculiar wish. To go to Korea to see a man, (I'll bet a dollar his name ain't Van). Margaret Car ley is a real cool cat, Pitching baseball she has down pat. This summer she will be leaving, Someday. . .marriage she will be dreaming. Bob as a football star, Has traveled near and far. Farming is his speciality, And Toulon is his locality. 14 Senior Class Will We, the Senior Class of 1957, being of sound mind and body do make, publish, and declare this our last will and testament. On my recent trip to New York City, to lead the Bruce Heise band at the Stork Club, I either met or heard reports of my classmates at N.H.S. While on the plane, I met William Guthrie, a wealthy landowner, with his wife and six children, who was on his way to Washington to confer with the Secretary of Agriculture. Bill told me that Robert Foes, inventor of synthetic milk, had recently received a patent on his invention and was making lots of money. After the plane arrived at New York, I passed the reservation desk. I saw Carol Krahn, who was head secretary for United Airlines of New York. She said that she had recently been a stewardess and had flown with Jerry Welbourne, the ace pilot of our time. When I arrived at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, I bought a copy ot the New York Times and discovered that Senator Redenius, (Rep. 111.), had set a filibustering record in the U.S. Senate. As I was signing the registrar, I saw Marlene Williams' name, who had just received a gold record for selling a million copies of her hit record Broken Knuckles.” I decided to pay her a visit. I was happy to see her and she told me about some of our classmates back home. She said that on her recent trip back to Neponset she saw Stanley Kaiser down at the Sugar Bowl. He told her that he owned and operated a Pepsi Bottling Company. While they were there talking, Suzanne Burcham came in for dinner with her husband. She told them that she had settled down and was mothering a set of twins. A poster at the Sugar Bowl showed that Joan Williams, a missionary to the experimental expeditionary forces in Antarctica, would give a lecture on the conversion of Penguins at the local Methodist Church. Marlene told me she was going to be the surprise guest singer that night at my performance. This gave us a better chance to talk about old times. After the performance we were joined by Margaret Carley and Howard Milnes. Margaret was chief costume designer for C.B.S. Television, a job that kept her busy 24 hours a day. Howard just happened to be in town for a railroad convention as he was president of Milnes, Thorpe, and Co., a large Mid-West railroad. My next booking for the band was in London. When I arrived there, 1 had the pleasure of seeing General Edwin Bannas and Professor Walter Claeys. It seems that Edwin rose rapidly in the Military and now commands our 9th army. Walter, a prominent atomic scientist recently received the Nobel Prize for his work in atomic radiation. Since I have returned home I have kept track of all my old classmates. A class reunion has been planned for the year 2000 so we'll be meeting again soon. 16 Hall of Fame BOY GIRL Tallest Bruce Carol Shortest Jerry Suzanne Youngest Bill Marlene Oldest Walter Joan Darkest Stanley Carol Lightest Bill Margaret Studies Most Bruce Joan Studies Least Jerry Suzanne Most Romantic Stanley Suzanne Most Athletic Bob Carol Most Mannerly Bob Marlene Most Bashful Bruce Suzanne Biggest Flirt Stanley Margaret Biggest Feet Bruce Joan Smallest Feet Bob Suzanne Prettiest eyes Bill Margaret Night Owls Stanley Carol Smartest Richard Marlene Noisiest Walter Joan Sleepiest Jerry Carol Lovers Howard Margaret Class Workers Richard Joan Most Obedient Bill Marlene Best Drivers Howard Marlene Slowest Ed Suzanne Hottest Temper Walter Suzanne Class Cut-ups Jerry Margaret Daredevils Ed Carol Best Dancers Bob Marlene Class Bookworms Richard Margaret Study-Hall Walkers Ed Joan Teacher's Pets Richard Margaret Best Dressed Bruce Marlene Most likely to succeed Bruce Joan Prettiest Smile Bob Carol Class Favorite Sport Football Class Favorite Pastime Going Away Class Favorite Subject Opposite Sex Class Favorite Song Stardust Class Favorite Hour 12:00 - 1:00 a.m. This page is sponsored by THE STAR COURIER 17 Senior Class History On September 1, 1953, fifteen brave freshmen climbed aboard a Burlington engine at the Grade School and went for a short ride to N, W. S. Here they were joined by Richard Sellon and Suzanne Bur-cham where they got on a Zephyr Streamliner for a journey through high school. The students who were chosen to conduct us through our Freshman year were: Marlene Williams, president; Dick Sellon, vice president; Carol Krahn, secretary-treasurer; Margaret Carley and Bill Guthrie, Booster Club. All were active in school activities. One of our activities was sponsoring the Valentine's Party which was a great success. Our conductor was Mr. Luther. In the fall of '54, sixteen members entered the Zephyr Streamliner to continue their journey through N. H. S. The following students were chosen to conduct us through our second year: Carol Krahn, president; Bruce Heise, vice president; Richard Redenius, secretary-treasurer. Margaret Carley, Joan Williams, Robert Foes, and Billy Guthrie were on the Booster Club. The class was very active in all activities. We happily initiated the Freshmen at a party which was a roaring success. Our float in the Homecoming Parade rated second. During the journey we lost Roy Sharer who transferred to Kewanee. Miss Tracy was our conductor. The junior stage of our trip through high school was a busy one. All year we sold refreshments at games and at noons to raise money for the Junior-Senior Prom. Our prom was May 12 at Hotel Clark in Princeton, the theme was Satellite Ball, and the band was Jimmy Marvin. The officers who conducted us through the year were: Richard Redenius, president; Stanley Kaiser, vice president; Bruce Heise, secretary; Margaret Carley, treasurer. Bill Guthrie, Richard Redenius, Carol Krahn, Margaret Carley, Marlene Williams, and Joan Williams, were on the Booster Club. During the journey we lost Richard Sellon who transferred to Sheffield. Mrs. Chesnutt was our conductor for the trip. We have just completed the fourth stage of our journey fhrough N.H.S. and have left the train at Graduation Point. During the trip, we won first prize in the Homecoming Parade led by Queen Marlene Williams and King Bob Foes. We gave the annual Christmas party. We engaged the Tom Owen's Band for the Senior Dance, March 29. We worked hard on the annual and took our trip to Chicago. Those who took care of the business of the class were: Margaret Carley, president; Marlene Williams, vice president; Carol Krahn, secretary; Joan Williams, treasurer; Suzanne Burcham, reporter. Mrs. Chesnutt and Mr. Kizer were our conductors for our last and final lap at N.H.S. Richard Redenius was editor of the annual and Bruce Heise was editor oi the newspaper. We were given a hard time until after the initiation - which we didn't enjoy. Our big project that year was sponsoring a very successful Valentine Party. On August 30, 1955, twenty-one sophomores were present for enrollment. We lost Micky Kazmeiski but gained Kay Kizer and Bill Stopp. John Moeller joined us during the second semester. Our class had the honor of having Becky, Linda, and Mary chosen as cheerleaders that year. Of course, our big job of the year was initiating the freshmen. We also had the pleasant job of decorating the gym for the Homecoming Dance to the theme of Autumn Leaves. Twenty-one members met at the doors of NHS to enroll as upperclassmen. Mike Cosner was the only one not with us. We elected our officers as follows.- Dan, President; Mary Ann, Vice-President; Nancy, Secretary; Linda, Treasurer; and Stephen and Becky, Reporters. The Junior-Senior Prom was the activity we sponsored this year. Our class has been active in sports, music, dramatics, and other school activities. This page sponsored by GUY E. We elected officers as follows: Jean Papacek, president; Bill Mercer, vice president; Janet Miller, secretary-treasurer. We were represented on the Booster Club by Carolyn Carley and Bill Mercer. The next step in our school career was our initiation which we passed with flying colors. We sponsored the traditional Valentine Party. The last part of August, 1956, a group of boys and girls known as the class of 59 met for a second time at Neponset High School. Most of us had survived one year at N. H. S. and had decided to try for another. Our class consisted of 14 students when we started school. Along the line, though, we lost Judy Harter, but we gained two new boys. Dennis Williams who came from Buda High School, and John Rednour from Princeton joined our class. Cecil Dahl, a former classmate returned to N. H. S. Early in the year the class elected officers. They are Carolyn Carley, Secretary and Treasurer; Ronnie Miller, Vice-President; and Bill Mercer, President. Mrs. High and Mr. Luther are our class sponsors. Our class was the sponsor of the Freshmen Initiation Party. We also entered a float in the Homecoming Parade with the theme Bury the Bears. There were 11 boys and 5 girls. We elected Sam Berry for President, Jack Scott as Vice President, Gary Coates as Secretary and Gary Stabler as Treasurer. Our advisors were Mr. Quinn and Mrs. Crowson. We were initiated. Boy that black-top was surely hot on our bare feet! All the boys except Paul Heberer went out for football, but John Bennett and Sam Berry were the only letter winners. George Boehne joined our class in about the middle of the year. He was previously enrolled at Toulon where he played Frosh-Soph football. He was a first-string guard. Watch for a future star in George! We wish the Seniors a lot of luck after graduation. We all hope to be back at Neponset High as Sophomores next year. This page sponsored by STETSON'S STORE 25 F. H. A. History The Neponset Chapter of the National FHA Organization had a very active year. The year started with a bang in the back yard at Mrs. Crowson’s home, in the form of an FHA Weiner Roast honoring the incoming Freshman girls. On the 11th of October, the officers traveled to Spring Valley with the FHA chapter mothers, to an Officer's Sectional Meeting. An educational time was had by all. October 26 the FHA went to work and cleaned all over town--Hobo Work Day, which was very successful. November saw a Surprise shower for Faye Fussner and a new thing in Neponset High—a necking party ! FHA went caroling December and sent domes to an Indian reservation. January 24 the girls honored their dads with a Daddy Date Night , which the dates enjoyed a great deal. A Panel on Dating came oft very well in March. Everyone acquired more information about tire hows and whys of dating. April 9 a school program was put on, in observance of National FHA week. Also, in April the Neponset Chapter had charge of the decorations at the FHA Spring Rally. A formal installation in May and the annual Eighth Grade Tea ended the school year of '56-57. Experimental plots are maintained at the Strip Mine to test the value of mined land. Regular farming is practiced on our local Ag Farm with very favorable results. All-School Party—The FFA sponsored an all school potluck supper and party. After eating, dancing was enjoyed to the music of the Melody Five. Hy-Yield Corn Program—The Chapter sponsors this event every year to find the champion corn grower in our area. A good deal of education is included for participating farmers as well as students, In December a dinndr was held, announcing this year’s winners. Wisconsin Farm Tour--Mr. Luther, John Junis, and several FFA members toured a number of Wisconsin farms, including Mr. Luther's home farm. They stayed overnight at Mr. Luther's cabin. Shop Projects--During the past year several old tractors were overhauled in our Ag shop. Two old cars were also repaired. Some of the classes built their projects, such as hog houses, feeders, and other farm equipment. Our FFA activities center around our Agriculture courses which consist of classroom studies and a study of home, farm, and other activities such as field trips, agricultural projects, and learning farm skills. Kay Kizer was scheduled to enter, but she couldn't because of illness. Our entry in the Little Eight One Act Play Contest was Tile Neighbors by Zona Gale. It was a delightful comedy, with characters taken bodily from small town life. It was a touching story about a friendless child who falls into the care of The Neighbors. This play was given at Ohio on March 20, 1957, in the annual Little Eight One Act Play Contest. The Neighbors won second place. Bonnie Stetson was awarded the best supporting girl's role for playing the part of Grandma. Others in the cast were: Mary Ann Gunning, Stephen Gunning, Larry Whaples, Josephine Amburgy, Joan Williams, Kay Kizer, and Joan Nanninga. Mrs. Chesnutt was the director. Football On Saturday, September 1, 1956, a squad of 26 football candidates reported to Coach Quinn. This was the largest group in recent years at N.H.S. Included in the group were the following lettermen: Stanley Kaiser, Bruce Heise, Bob Foes, Arnold Carlson, Dan Wood, Leslie Bennett, and Captain Richard Redenius. Everyone was eager to start, and the first three weeks of drills passed quickly. Those who won starting positions for the first game were: Bruce Heise and Dick Foes at ends, Leslie Bennett and Richard Redenius at tackles, Dan Wood at center, Stanley Kaiser at quarterback, and Bob Foes and Arnold Carlson at halfbacks. As the season progressed everyone had high hopes, but two defeats in a row by Manlius and Buda ended our chances for the top spot in the league. We closed our season on a winning note, however, as we won three games in a row. This page sponsored by THE FAIR STORE and HOTEL CLARK 40 Another gain for Neponset! Season Highlights The football season this past year completed the transition of Neponset from a cellar dweller in the Little Eight Conference to a title contender. Only two losses were incurred this year and hopes run high for another outstanding team next year. The opening game of the season pitted Neponset against Tiskilwa. Neponset led all the way in a thriller only to be tied in the final minutes on an intercepted pass and an eighty yard run for a touchdown. For the first time in several years Neponset recorded two shutout games over Sheffield, 34 to 0, and La Moille, in a sea of mud, 27 to 0. The highest score ever to be accomplished by a Neponset team was our 65 to 13 win over Malden. Games withWyanet and Ohio were never in doubt as we led all the way. A 56 to 14 shellacking by Manlius and a 33 to 19 upset win by Buda were the only disappointing notes during the season. Five seniors closed their football careers after the last game of the season. They were Bruce Heise, Bob Foes, Bill Guthrie, Stanley Kaiser, and Richard Redenius. This was the first winning season at Neponset in several years, and all who played are to be congratulated. Football Honors With the fine season that we had came added honors to several members of the squad. The following players received letters for their performances: Bruce Heise, Bob Foes, Stanley Kaiser, Richard Redenius, Arnold Carlson, Leslie Bennett, Dan Wood, Dick Foes, and John Bennett. In addition to this Arnold Carlson was the scoring champion of the Little Eight. His total of 112 points was one of the highest individual totals a Neponset player has ever scored. In the All Conference balloting by Little Eight coaches he was the only player to receive the unanimous backing of all nine coaches, as he received a First Team Halfback position. End Bruce Heise was awarded the end spot on the All Conference Second Team. Honorable Mention was accorded center Dan Wood and tackle Richard Redenius in the balloting. Richard Redenius has been football captain for the past season. Basketball This year Neponset was hoping for a good season, but complications seemed to arise from the very beginning. With good material to work with and the desire to win, half of the Varsity seemed to think a team of 5 with 1 reserve could carry the load for N.H.S. With a good squad of Juniors and Sophomores, we are all looking forward for the team of 1957-58. Although this year we only won 4 ames with big wins over Buda and Sheffield, we can assure you that you can look forward to a good season next year. The team will be led by keen-eyed 5' 10 guard George Krahn and 9 other boys of good ability which should produce a team of great potential. Letters were given to George Krahn, Dan Wood, Bill Guthrie, Arnold Carlson, Bob Milnes, and Bob Foes. SECOND ROW: Manager Jim Burcham, Bud Carlson, John Bennett, Coach Quinn, Ivan Bennett, Dick Foes, and Alan Kaiser. Junior Varsity Basketball This year the Frosh-Soph team won 6 out of 17 games. The number of losses we received this year can be attributed to our lack of experience. The loss of last year's players affected our teamwork and our team’s ability. The 3 high scorers on the team this year were Dick Foes, John Bennett, and Bud Carlson with 247, 124, and 110 respectively. Although we didn’t fare too well in this year's tournament and games, we are hoping for a more successful ream next year. This page sponsored by the SUGAR BOWL CAFE MOTEL 46 N. H. S. Basketball Season Neponset's Zephyrs started slowly, but towards the end ot the season they picked up steam ana came through with a big upset win over Sheffield in the District Tournament. In several games the Zephyrs came very close, but could not quite make the grade when the going got tough. Coach Quinn's charges had a final season record of 4 wins and 19 losses. Queen Marlene Williams and her court Homecoming 1956 On October 19, the annual Homecoming Parade was held at 1:30. There were about 25 entries. The parade started at the High School and proceeded to Main Street where the band played and a pep session was held. The Senior Class won first prize for their float; second prize went to the PTA; and third was awarded to the Junior class float. After the parade the football game between Neponset and Buda started. It was a nip and tuck game most of the time but Buda's superiority finally won over with a score of 33-19. The highlight of Homecoming was the dance which was held at nine o’clock. Music was furnished by the Blu Tones and refreshments were served by the Junior Class. The decorations were furnished by the Sophomore Class with Canadian Sunset as the theme. During the evening this year's king and queen were crowned. Last year's royalty, Glenn Carlson and Eileen Miller, crowned our king and queen, Robert Foes and Marlene Williams. They were adorned by a court of Margaret Carley, Joan Williams, Suzanne Burcham, Carol Krahn, Howard Milnes, Stanley Kaiser, Bruce Heise, and Richard Redenius.
