THE ZEPHYR... f vs viva: Q ' in W lllll ' Q - - - OUR TRAVELS ' - September 4, 1948, marks the beginning of a volume of unforgettable experiences for our class. This was the day we started our journey through high school. The fourteen bustling pas- sengers all had accomodations in the Pullman Coach Car. We experienced some difficulty in this car but we realize now that our experiences there are invaluable in making present situations more clear. The passengers chosen to be be leaders this trip were: Donald Gerrond, President, Shirley Bennett, Vice Presidentg Barbara Mercer, Secre- tary, John Stewart, Treasurer, Barbara McKie and Neil Burnett, Booster Clubg and James Ver- bout, Reporter. There were many interesting passengers aboard and we became acquainted with one pas- senger of wide agricultural experiences and an- other who enjoyed teaching the wonders of Mathematics and Science. We found clubs, sports and activities to make the journey more enjoyable. We were guests at the Initiation Party and hosts at the alentine Party. Pleasant times pass quickly, and before we knew it, vacation was starting. The summer soon passed and once more we were boarding the train. This year we were old handst' and had no trouble finding our way around. We quickly elected officers and settled down to enjoy our trip. This year's officers- James Verbout, Presidentg Beulah Christiansen, Vice President, Bernice Christiansen, Secretary, Shirley Bennett and Wendell Yepsen, Booster Club, and Janis Bigham, Reporter-led us in our many activities. On this trip it was our privilege to be in- timately associated with a celebrated sportsman. We took from him a more profound concept of the term. He was deeply interested in history: his understanding of the world problems, both past and present, gave us a clear idea of our re- sponsibilities as citizens. On this trip, we initiated the newcomers aboard for the first time. We enjoyed our journey, so twelve of us reserved tickets in advance for the third excur- This page spo11s01'ed by. .. sion, which was sheduled to start September, 1950. We, when the date arrived, elected Shirley, Wendell, Barbara, James, Janis, and Donnie for our leaders. Bernice was elected to help cheer our team, the Zephyrs, onward. We remember meeting a shrewd business man who took a great deal of time explaining the elements of business law and related subjects, and there was also a cultured gentleman, who in- stilled in us an ease in language arts, which. undoubtedly, will remain with us. Moneymaking, the Prom, and other activities kept us occupied during this excursion. Three years of our journey had passed before we knew it, we were nearing our destination- the jumping off point. This year's officers were Barbara Mercer, President, Maurice Yepsen, Vice President, Bernice Christiansen, Secretary- Treasurerg Beulah Christiansen and Wendell Yepsen, Booster Club, and Shirley Bennett, Re- porter. Beulah and Bernice Christiansen were elected cheerleaders. We were also honored by having Bernice Christiansen and Donald Ger- rond chosen Homecoming King and Queen. Among the interesting passengers aboard this year was a young lady whom we met in the Diner, she gave us some valuable tips on cooking and home arts. We also met an interesting man who was interested in teaching our generation to appreciate fine music. The Zephyr has been an experience, the worth of which cannot be estimated immediately, but long after we travelers have separated, we, in- dividually, can reflect and realize that what We have accomplished is due, in part, to the exper- iences shared on our memorable trip on the Ne- ponset Zephyr. A trip such as we have had, associations such as we have made, observations we have exper- ienced, sportsmanship we have witnessed, can- not help but be beneficial to us in our fixture relationships and in our future travel through life. . . . .Quickie Sales, Sheffield, Illinois
