Special Note NHS held its annual Awards Day May 17. Students were honored for achieve- ments in academics and scholarship, as well as for participation in extracurricu- lar activities. Advisors of Student Council Tomahawk, Messenger, FFA, FHA, Sci- ence Club, and AFS honored their mem- bers and thanked them for their participa- tion. Academic awards were given to out- standing students for achievements in ge- ometry, algebra, science, Spanish, busi- ness, and debate. Class officers were recognized along with student secre- taries, classroom aides, essay contest winners, math and science contest win- ners, and art students. This year's Illinois State Scholars were recognized and the top ten scholars for the 78-79 school year were announced. Bill Osborn has just completed four years of high school. This is not anunu- sual accomplishment, but Bill is legally blind. When Bill entered school, he used large print for reading. Then in 1964, he learned Braille at the St. Louis School for the Blind. Last summer he studied elec- tronics at Parkland School and, with the aid of a special teacher assigned by the Eastern Illinois area of Special Educa- tion, Bill has maintained a B average. He has also been involved in Student Council, science club, and several school plays.
