journey To The Center Of The Earth West Side Story 8 I North To Alaska i 11 I South Of The Border i Special Note NHS held its annual Awards Day May 17. Students were honored for achieve- ments in academics and scholarship, as well as for participation in extracurricu- lar activities. Advisors of Student Council Tomahawk, Messenger, FFA, FHA, Sci- ence Club, and AFS honored their mem- bers and thanked them for their participa- tion. Academic awards were given to out- standing students for achievements in ge- ometry, algebra, science, Spanish, busi- ness, and debate. Class officers were recognized along with student secre- taries, classroom aides, essay contest winners, math and science contest win- ners, and art students. This year's Illinois State Scholars were recognized and the top ten scholars for the 78-79 school year were announced. Bill Osborn has just completed four years of high school. This is not anunu- sual accomplishment, but Bill is legally blind. When Bill entered school, he used large print for reading. Then in 1964, he learned Braille at the St. Louis School for the Blind. Last summer he studied elec- tronics at Parkland School and, with the aid of a special teacher assigned by the Eastern Illinois area of Special Educa- tion, Bill has maintained a B average. He has also been involved in Student Council, science club, and several school plays. This year Neoga High School was the home of students with various talents. Above left is Chris Sarff, who is a recent graduate of Lakeland Clownology School. Top Right are Dick Keck, Scott Krueger, Nona Alexander, and Randy Rentfrow, who all held district offices, a new honor for Neoga High School. Above left are the top ten graduating Seniors: Randy Rent- frow, Sandi Cordes, Barry Bullock, Lorri Walk, Brenda Coy, Tim Zahrn, Teresa Shuemaker, Maureen Greuel, Nona Alex- ander, and Jenny Jansen. snaavaa The Producers Making the major decisions for the Neoga Community Unit School District 3, the Board of Education consists of seven members. Mrs. Patricia Wil- liamson, school board presi- dent, joined board members: Charles Baker, Victor Czer- wonka, Charles Janson, Rich- ard Keep, Dr. Robert Swengel, and Kae Whitaker in many long hours of discussions concern- ing school matters. Mr. Overby sighed with relief after moving into the new build- ing. 18 Mr. Green, the Chief of the Indians, has worked at Neoga High School for four years. Working by his side was Neoga High School's first assistant principal, Mr. Carpenter. Mr. Green and Mr. Car- penter fill their day keeping all the little Indians in line. Being busy all day, Mr. Albin somehow finds the time to help the Indians with their schedules and their future plans. The Miracle Worker The Neoga High School faculty is sometimes referred to as the Miracle Workers because finding time to spon- sor clubs and organizations and discov- ering techniques to encourage students' seem like a true miracle. Margo Blaudow Phoebe Church Zita Cobble Ruth Abell Pat Andres Terri Biggs Nila Elgin Jerry Krueger Doug McClure Phil Glosser Rex Lindley J. Lee McTeer James Irwin Howard Louthan Shelby McTeer Donna Kenneaster John Luallen Scott Posey I During the year the Neoga High School faculty members were assisted by stu- dent teachers from Eastern Illinois University. Following is a list of teach- ers and student teachers: Mrs. Abell- Barbara Blacklock, Sandra Ehmann; Mrs. Church-Jody Furry; Mr. Krueger-Christopher Miller, Phyllis Piet; Mr. Lindley-Brian Belcher, Mrak Tucker; Mr. Louthan-Alice Dunn, Christopher Miller; and Mr. Stortzum- James Chamness. Pictured above are Michael Snyder, Kay Starwalt, Robert Stortzum, Karen Walk, Dale Will, and Phil Zim- mer. Twenty-six years ago when Howard Louthan began his teaching career at NHS he served as librarian in addition to his science teaching duties. Since those early years, Mr. Louthan has moved out of the library into the Chemistry and Physics Labs. A graduate of the University of Illinois in Agriculture, Mr. Louthan did graduate work at EIU as well as Northern Illinois University where he earned his master's degree in Outdoor Teacher Education. Mr. Louthan particiated in a teacher exchange program during the 65-66 school year, spending a year teaching in a high school in Edinburgh, Scotland. As his teaching career comes to a close, Mr. Louthan reflects that schools have probably kept pace with the general change in times. 23 Office secretaries, Terri Hoelscher and Jerry Watkins wel- comed their move into new centrally- located office facilities this year. In- cluded in their jobs are a surprising variety of duties including message- deliver first-aid giver tele- phone-answerer, and errand-run- ner .'' ■■I-1— nrviTTTT High Noon The Professionals The professionals utilized new equip- ment and covered new territory cleaning and maintaining 73,400 square feet of the newly constructed Neoga Jr. -Sr. High School. Doug Johnston, top right, and Wayne Johnston, lower right, handled the powerful vacuum cleaners and scrubbers on carpeted classroom floors and tiled corridors. Sue McKerrow, above left, demonstrated the old adage, a moving feather duster gathers much dust. Harold Romack, maintainance man, and Bob Meek transportation supervisor, pose top far right. 26 A Touch Of Class The class officers for this year's seniors were: Scott Rankin, President; Mau- reen Greuel, Vice-Presi- dent; Lisa Wright, Secre- tary; Brenda Coy, Trea- surer; and Kerry Walters, Student Council Represen- tative . Sponsoring the class were Mrs. Biggs and Mr. Stortzum. Highlights of the senior year were homecoming, prom, graduation, and the class trip to St. Louis. Oh well, three out of four ain't bad! Close Encounters Of The The Juniors were kept busy this year trying to keep ahead and out of the red. They sold more magazines than anyone had in the past; the profit came to a to- tal of $1,500. A slow, but helpful, source of rev- enue was the candy sales. Between the candy sales, magazine sales, and money they already had, the Juniors came up with a very exciting, long-lasting prom. Yes, the Juniors still feel that The only way to be happy is to make others happy. The class started off the year by electing the fol- lowing officers: president. Brad Coy; vice president, Gary Keck; secretary- treasurer, Christy Clark; and sargeant-at-arms, Jim Reed. Student council representatives were Cin- dy Rentfrow, and Troy Miller. With the help of our sponsors, Mr. Gloss- er and Mr. Posey, the class project was a suc- cess. The candids on these pages indicate what freshmen did best: survive public speaking, struggle through Typing I, and use the library to its fullest. This year's staff welcomed back its advi- sor, Mrs. McTeer. Plus, for the first time, students on the yearbook staff were able to meet during regular school hours, rather than after school. They gathered together twice a week dur- ing second hour to write copy, complete rough drafts, and to meet deadlines. With this new and better organization of time, the staff faced the problem of produc- ing a quality yearbook with optimism for this year and those to come. The activi- ties of the Council included raising money for the Olney Children's Home, aiding in the forming of a tutor program, sponsor- ing various assemblies throughout the year, and presenting Homecoming Week with many activities such as Stuffed Ani- mal Day and, a new aspect, a gong show with more talent than Neoga has ever seen. The Council also sponsored a Disco with Star Sound System entertaining, a Halloween Dance with a record number of unique costumes and a very special Mr. Louthan Day in which a This is your Life ceremony was held and cake served. Proposing a National Honor Soci- ety, ordering tables for the patio area, and purchasing a activity sign for the new school were among the many activities of this year's Council.
