She was a member of the class of '80. UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN Let us not say good-bye to her anymore than we would to the sun and star, For she will live on through us - through our memories her spirit - smile - happiness her magnificient, constant striving for life itself. For she had to fight — a fight which few of us - if any have yet had to face. She would not be held down- not by physical limitations or pain or other doubts of what they thought she could do. The most beautiful part of her was that she overcame her handicaps as best she could, whereas too many of us- Let our handicaps overcome ourselves. So we salute you, Viola for your courage and strength- taken with smiles and happiness, You have shown us what can be done, and you will live on through us. So we ask that God will give us at least part of your strength to live on Until we meet again. Julie A. Barber i 6 “Head” Honcho’s Mr. Overby, Superinten- dent, and Mr. Green, Prin- cipal, have both been work- ing at our school for three years. During this time they have both done an outstand- ing job in getting our new Junior-Senior High School started. Joseph M. Cronin, State Superintendent, came and inspected the new school along with our Board of Edu- cation . 8 :: :: :: The Board The Board of Education has been working diligently to as- sure the district building pro- jects will be completed on time. Another goal of theirs has been to utilize school funds in the most efficient and effective way, for the betterment of the students of the district. This is the school board that has been serving our school and community for the past year; Standing; Charles Baker, Roger Ewing, Robert Swengel, and Gary Mercer. Seated: Charles Jansen, Patricia Williamson, Victor Czerwonka. 9 TEACHERS According to a dictionary a teacher is 1 ’one who gives instruc- tion that provides knowledge.'' Neoga High School is fortunate and has many of these teachers. As we build memories of our final year in the old high school, we dedicate these three pages to our educators. Tell 'em Coach! This page is to honor them for helping build more memories. Pictured to the right are the first se - mester student teachers. The two secretaries at the high school are Mrs. Allene Young and Mrs. Jerry Watkins. The two secretaries for the board office are Mrs. Gail Moore and Mrs. Evelyn Alexander. Shown to the right: Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Alexander. Below (left to right): Mrs. Watkins and Mrs. Young. 14 Our Cooks The cooks at Neoga High School have done a tremen- dous job in keeping our stomachs full and our mouths closed. All of the students would like to say ' 'thanks'' for the fine job. To the left is Mrs. Nichols from the sandwich line. Below is Mis. Beals and Mrs. Orr from the kitchen. 15 Bus Drivers The Neoga bus drivers are responsible for our lives every day. They take on the responsibility of getting us to and from school, which is some- times easier said than done. This year has been an exceptional year for snow, but our drivers ' 'deliver through rain, sleet or snow.'' They put up with us when we are 1 'grouchy'' in the morn- ing, and rowdy after school. They don't even complain a bit, but we should all realize that they are human, and deserve more respect. This year the drivers took safety classes to better their knowledge of taking care of students. What would we do without them ? 16 What Would We Do Without Them? Several times during the day the custodians are interrupted by stu- dents for some reason or other. The students may be asking for anything from cleanser to clean a desk top to a crow-bar to open their locker. Even though they of- ten have to stop an important task to help, they never refuse. 17 18 s e n • i o r s ’78 Bill Albin Joyce Anderson Wes Andrews Tuana Arthur Larry Bahney Tammy Baker David Ballinger Kelly Barger Debbie Boyer Debbie Boyken Dan Bullock Beverly Carver — Will the class of '78 ever be forgotten in the halls of NHS ? As the year progressed, still the seniors were unpredictable in their actions. The class of '78's main goal was to raise enough money to give the best possible Homecoming. To earn this money, the energetic workers did everything from sell- ing Coke at the basketball games to selling magazines in the fall. The outstanding group of seniors was led by: President-Chuck Whitaker Vice-Presi- dent-Tammy Baker; Secretary-Betty Louthan; Treasurer-Debbie Shuemaker; and Student Council Representatives-Larry Bahney and Ginger Walk. The annual magazine sale was quite successful in pre- paring the class financially for Prom, with proceeds totalling $1,340.63. Because the sale turned out so well, dues were lowered from $4.00 to $2.00. Another change was class colors — from lavender and purple to light blue and yellow. Candy sales at home basketball games provided additional funds. Those who helped guide us through the year were: Scott Rankin, president; Maureen Greuel, Vice- president; Terri Parker, secretary; Brenda Coy, trea- surer; and Tim Zahm, student council. Our class of- ficers; President Ed Cordes, Vice- President Patsy West, Secretary Richard Whitaker, Treasurer Don Dow, and Stu- dent Council Representatives Jeanine Lindley and Greg Czerwonka, have or- ganized and led our class from 'in the red' to well above. Our bake sale and sock hops made others happy and at the same time made us very happy with the income. We hope our motto, ''The way to be happy is to make others happy'1', will be easy to follow in our final two years of high school. 36 Rob Davie Wayne Deters Don Dow Bryan Elliott Tina Enloe Pam Evans Kenith Figgins Kevin Figgins Tina Foltz Jim Fowler Paula Frailey Kelly Jo Gass David Greuel Patricia Hall Tom Helm Sheryl Hoedebecke 37 David Hoene Lynn Jahraus Patty Janes Victor Jansen Cheryl Johnston Leo Kemper Terry King Ken Kleinik Craig Koester Gary Krietemeyer Sandy Krietemeyer Jeanine Lindley Pat Lindsay Jeff Logue Gary Ludwig Brian Maroon 38 Robbie Mayhew Andy McKerrow Bryan Meyer Wesley Modglin Carl Oakley Mike Osterday Rick Painter Pam Parkhurst Doug Pattin Becki Pygott Denise Reagin Rusty Rennels Kim Rentfrow Melody Roth John Russell Jesse Sanderson 39 Chris Sarff Dan Sheehan Diane Sheehan Steve Sudkamp Lisa Swengel John Thomas Brenda Van Scyoc Melanie Walk Rick Walk Carla Walker Nick Ward Aaron Warner 40 Marie Warner Rose Warren Laura Ann Waters Patsy West Larry Westjohn Jamie Whalin Richard Whitaker Leigh Ann White Lisa White Mitch White Stuart Wright Cindi Zimmer 41 Qarra rJt S 1 %) : dA teroMfiori O' A p c o°y'[ 2 VK d(£ 5i rf: $' $H Qsr jL u Jfto LvlA V . @ r K w r. ; ;U' fYluctlcx-j VJ _ tw xx_ 44 Randy Albin Joe Anderson Bob Bacon Dennis Baker Randy Baker Scott Ballinger Tim Beals Carla Beals Kevin Bright Ron Butts Loretta Brown Dennis Bush Beth Clark Michelle Claybaugh Susan Cline Michelle Cravens Jerry Cummins Terry Cummins Randy Czerwonka Karen Deadmond Sharon Deadmond Denise Deters Ron Dow Bruce Drennan Shelly Ehrhart Peggy Evans Rhonda Evans Sam Ewing Angela Folta Rod Fullenwider Kevin Geiling Julie Gentry Tom Greuel Max Hall Lisa Handfland John Hardesty Larry Harmon Joe Hatton Melanie Hartman Rhonda Hatton Suzette Hebei Nancy Helm Rita Hewing Tim Hoene Margaret Hutton Mike Icenogle Joe Jarhaus Vic Jinkins Dick Keck Tony Kenworthy Ken Krampe Mike Krampe Scott Krueger Jack LaRoe Ann Livingston Karla Mette 45 Don Mettendorf Don Mettendorf Todd Miller Hal Modglin Kathy Nichols Robin Richardson Randy Painter James Phillips John Potter Tony Price Cindy Phillips Pam Plummer Linda Prumer Tom Olmstead Leah Osborn Scott Roberts Diane Shaffer Patty Sheumaker 46 Trish Slaughter Wane Smyser Carol Spivey Marta Thomas Larry Trexler Bev Walk Gregg Walk Roger Walk Jerry Wallace Dana Whitaker Chris White Vivian White Brett Williamson Julie Wilson Ronnie Wilson Marsha Wilson Laurie Young Penny Zahm Jim Zimmer Julie Albin 47 48 49 Tomahawk Staff Succeeds Without Sponsor Dedication was the key to the preparation of the 1977-78 Tomahawk-the dedication of students who volunteered for the task and worked without a sponsor to see it through. At first there was to be no Tomahawk this year because we had no sponsor. But with the help of Mr. Green, Jerry Bloemer of the American Yearbook Company and Ernie Newberry of Walt's Studio, the book was finally completed. Student Council Has Active Year w The activities of the Council have been many and varied this year. The year began with the annual ' 'Back to School Dance,'' which included a few new games, such as '' Spoon on the String.'1 On November 4, the Council collected $175 for UNI- CEF . A November dance was held featuring WEIC disc jockeys. The Council sponsored Homecoming Week this year and added some new activities. Re- member Egg-Dropping Contest, Pudding-Eating Contest, Singing Telegrams? The annual Christ- mas Party for Council members was held at Shannon Tabbert's house and the weather was perfect for sledding. The ' 'Sweetheart Dance'' was finally held, after many snow days, on March 11 featuring the band ' 'SUNSET''. Many new members attended the Spring Leadership Workshop in Mattoon. The State Convention was held May 4,5, and 6 at Chi- cago with 7 of our members attending. The annual Old and New Member Get-Together was held at Bill Albin's lake house. We'll never know how that ca- noe tipped over. The ' 'last chance to dance'' at this school was May 29. The title was appropriately ' 'Movin' Out.'' Star Sound System from Charleston entertained with a light and sound show. The Coun- cil had a film of the old building made, as a mem- oir to be used for class reunions. He held summer band practices, preparing the bands for performances at Neoga Days and at the an- nual Ice Cream Social. Some of the high school musi- cal he directed were: 1 'The Wizard of Oz,'' ' 'Okla- homa, '' and ' 'Bye Bye Birdie.'' In addition, Mr. Springs prepared pep bands for home basketball games and coordinated solo, ensemble, band, and choral contests for area schools. Mr. Springs also involved the community in music programs with musical such as ' 'The Music Man'' and with contatas like '' The King of Kings.'' Future plans for Mr. Springs include piano tuning, and other work with musical instruments. The work he has done for the schools and community will always be remembered and greatly appreciated. Contests, such as Root Beer chugging, pudding eating, egg dropping, and a tug of war were carried on between classes and there were lots of participants, including teachers. Even though the Indians were de- feated by T-Town in a close, exciting game, the Homecoming dance was a success. Deb Shuemaker and Bill Albin were crowned Queen and King and the Homecoming court was introduced. The retiring King and Queen were Dave Walk and Lisa Kepp. Page 70; picture 1: standing: Retiring King and Queen, Dave Walk and Lisa Kepp. Seated: Bill Albin and Deb Shuemaker the 1977:78 King and Queen. The road wasn't always downhill, but the treasure at the top of the uphill climb was worth it. Larry Bahney, Valedictorian, and Scott Swengel, Salutatorian, expressed their thanks to their parents, the teachers, the School Board, and all of those people who will stay in their minds as 1 'the people who helped me make it through''. Yes, the Graduates are through those ' 'High School Days'', but now they must decide how they will change themselves and the world!
