T i Personnel Our Leaders Mr. James Maroon, Principal; Mr. Lyman Lewis, Superintendent; and the Board of Education, led us through our high school years by talking to us, help- ing us, and making our school system a better place to work and learn. Most people, adults and students alike, might not see all that these men do for us, but we could not function without them, this is for sure. Left: Mr. Maroon completes one of his daily chores. Right: Assistant Principal, Mr. Lindiey, and Mr. Maroon are proud to be seen in the halls of N.H.S. Below: Mr. Maroon often welcomes conferences with staff or students. 1. Mr. Lewis takes time out of his busy day to pose for a picture for the 73-74 Tomahawk. The student body at N.H.S. is fortunate to have the faculty staff we do. The faculty has helped the students with mini-course registration. Teachers who were sponsors of a club or organization stayed after school to supervise students in extracurricular activ- ities such as basketball, GAA, FHA, FFA, IA, Mes- senger and Tomahawk. WE, as students, thank the faculty for all the times they have corrected us, given us their advice, although at the time we thought there had to be a better way and now as we look back we can see the situation out of their eyes instead of our own. We thank the faculty for everything we have shared in learning and done for us on our path to success. Because we know that going forward is the only result in knowing, We May Never Pass This Way Again. ym N.H.S. Faculty 1973-74 'j' ABSENT . . . Women We Need These are the women who keep the school from getting lost in the history of records. They keep things intact, recorded up to date, and filled neatly in place. Of course, this is just one service they perform. It would be impossible to list all the things these women do for us. But special notice should go to Mrs. Zita Cobble, who became the Spanish and English teacher at the end of the first semester, and also to Mrs. Allene Young, who took her place as office secretary. All of these women, at the Board of Education Office, and also at the high school, are the ones we need so much and who are always there when any need arrives. We Hail You All We all hail the cooks, janitors, maintenance men and bus drivers! Without them where would we be? Nowhere! The cooks have kept our stomaches from growling. The janitors and maintenance men have kept everything going and clean. And if it hadn't been for those great bus drivers we would have never gotten to school, G.A.A., basketball games, etc. We hail all of them for their great services they provide. For some, it's a time when important decisions must be made. By now, we have had time to realize there is no turning back. We can only go forward now, and meet whatever comes their way. The first duty of the seniors was to choose class officers. We elected Becky Walk, President; Bill Kenworthy, Vice-President; Diana Harris, Secretary; Susan Spidle, Treasurer; Karen Hartke and Willie Rivera, Student Council Representatives. Next on the agenda were ideas to make money for the Homecoming. We came up with magazine sales and selling pop at the home basketball games. And then, the highlight of the year, the Homecoming used the theme of, This Magic Moment . And, of course, it was a magic moment when the announcement was made of who received the honor of being Homecoming King and Queen. But as graduation time nears, the journey is nearing its close. We look back over the years and we remember all the good times we've had. And even though time must go on, we feel a small twinge of sadness to think we won't be back at N.H.S. next year. But the journey comes to a close on Graduation Day. And then, we must start a new journey, but we should remember always our class motto, Your Success Depends on Your Efforts. ncia Your Success Depends On Your Efforts Cheryl Adam Mike Arthur Donna Bahney Judi Kay Baker Kathy Ballinger Missy Barber Joe Beals Cor ess Bence Doug Bond Steve Boswell Sally Brubaker Kim Bushur Sandy Bushur Vicki C eeton Mary Cline Nancy Cross Mary Ellen Cyr Jerry Deters 23 24 Cindy Elder Loyd Ewing Julie Fosbender Chris Gibson Don Hall David Hardesty Alice Harmon Diana Harris Karen Hartke Kevin Hoedebecke Tom Janes Bill Ken worthy Mark Kingery Tim Lewis Wayne Lucas Mary Ludwig Kathy Meyer Robert Miller 25 Debbie Moffitt 26 Kevin Mummel Steve Myers Willie Rivera Lew Ryder Jane Schabbing Pam Spivey Gale Starwa t Terry Starwalt Don Oh men Bill Partlow Renita Rennets Jim Sec rest Mickey Spencer Sue Spidle Vicky Stephens Laura Stewart Aubrey Storm 27 Bernie Thompson Sheryl Trigg Becky Walk Brenda Walk Marlene Walk Evelyn Warner June Watkins Richard Watson Tom Westjohn Gary Willenborg Ginger Willenborg Advisors Miss Andres Mr. Zimmer Senior Acfi'oifies 970-74 CHERYL ADAM: Class Officer- 3; Girls' Chorus- 1,2,3; Mixed Chorus- 1,2,3; Band- 3; Musical- 2; F.H.A.- 1; G.A.A.- 2,3. The sophomore class elect- ed Joannie Albin, President; Betsy Baker, Vice Pres- ident; Jannie Ryan, Secretary; Doris Jansen, Treas- urer; Cathy Russell and Kris Lindley, Student Council Representatives as their class leaders for the 1973-74 school year. With most everyone in the class partici- pating, the class had an exceptionally good turn out at their first sock-hop of the year. Thanks to every- one who contributed to the sock-hop! It has taken someone an awful lot of hard striv- ing hours of work, heartaches, headaches, and a great amount of patiences to make the class of '76 what it is. We, as a class, would like to extend a special thanks to Mrs. McTeer and Mr. Leathers for all the advice they have given us when times have been dark and rough. They have pulled us through many valleys and up many hills. I'm quite sure the class of '76 and their sponsors can make the next two years greater than the last two. Much effort and many long hours of practice help- ed to make the play the success it proved to be. Neoga was the first school in the state of Illinois to present the play. It also involved one of the largest casts and crews in the history of the Neoga High School plays. MASH is a play that will always be remembered by those who were involved and by those who came to see it. Don't turn mushy on me. Even though the Homecoming was postponed in December due to snow, and rescheduled in January, it went very well. With a lot of work and effort the seniors were credited for a job well done. Even though the Indians were defeated the night before by the Teutopolis Shoes it was an exciting evening. Crowned king was Mark Kingery by last year's king, Paul Cook. And crowned queen was Renita Rennels by Susan Strohl. This night was enjoyment for all. 1973-74 Homecoming Court: Left to right: Front Row: Tony Cyr, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pat Cyr, Mike Slaughter, son of Mr. and Mrs. PhiI Slaughter, Mark Kingery, 1973-74 Homecoming King, Renita Ren- nels, Homecoming Queen, Kyle Coen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Coen, and Angie Eckerty, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Eckerty. They are available every period of the day to set-up films to show or preview. This year's head projectionist is David Cordes who makes sure all the audio-visual equipment is clean and working to its top efficiency. Mrs. Voris spon- sors the A.V. Staff. Standing in the center of the well-equipped audio-visual center of Neoga High School are Ron Hite, Mrs. Voris, Tom Westjohn, Darryl Janes, David Cordes, Jim Phillips, and Tom Janes. 59 Office Assistants Office assistants consist of these nine junior and senior girls who fill the gap of communication bet- ween the office and you, as the students and faculty members. A few of the jobs these girls perform are answering the telephone, distributing mail, running errands, and recording attendance. What would the mighty tree of the secretarial staff be without these small and all important branches? LEFT TO RIGHT: Susie Figgins, Evelyn Warner, Diana Harris, Brenda Haskett, June Watkins, Ginger Willenborg, Sandy Bushur, Karen Hartke, and Marlene Weber. 60 Student Secretaries Some of the teachers at Neoga High have too much work to handle by themselves, so each of these girls are assigned to help one of the teach- ers. Each girl is a secretary to her teacher by typ- ing tests, writing letters, and sending for mer- chandise. They are a great help to the teachers, and it's good experience, too. The Indians Needed It. Yes, definitely the Indians needed luck, especially since they ended the season with 3 wins and 5 losses. The 1973 baseball team really worked hard, but not quite hard enough. Even though the team lost by Stew-Stras, in their first game of the season, they didn't lose their enthusiasm and came back to beat Brownstown in the second to the last game of the season. We wish the team more success in the coming year, than they had in the past season. Three games were lost by only one point and another game was lost in overtime. Two of those losses were to the National Trail Conference champion, Stewardson-Strasburg. The Indians also played state-ranked St. Anthony even most of the game before finally losing 80-73. The Indians started the season fairly well, having a 3-3 record after the first six games, but then had a midseason slump. The Indians then finished strong with wins over Martins- ville, St. Elmo, Sullivan, and Windsor. Front Row: Kevin Hoedebecke, Mark Kingery, Fred S wen gel, sengill. The year began with a bonfire and dance which got the ball going. The many accomplishments that follow show the we are well represented. A Coke machine has been installed for beverage lovers. They are maintaining the Honor System and keeping it active. The Post Halloween Dance which the Student Council sponsored worked out as well as can be expected after Halloween. They abolished the Homecoming floats and substituted a Homecoming week which contained fun-filled activities. The Student Council also honored Homecoming Kings and Queens of the past decade. One thing led to another and so a recycling project was started to dispose of the cans produced by the Coke machine. I suppose that as long as school continues the Stu- dent Council will work to make it better for the kids. Helps To Conserve Gasoline G.A.A. started out the year with the usual swim- ming at Villa Inn pool in Effingham. Then on to bowling at K-Bowl, where they bowled two games instead of the usual one to save trips to Effingham and to thus conserve gas. They also cut out skating entirely from their schedule, for the same reason. After bowling the G.A.A.er's came back to school to play volley-tennis and then outside for a round at softball. They ended out the year with the usual G.A.A. Banquet. All in all they had a very active and success- ful year. There's no one person who does it all. So, now we would like to take this time to thank everyone who has helped make this yearbook possible: Our Advertisers and Boosters The Faculty, Administration, Students, and Parents Blankenberg Photographers and Gene Hayes And, a special thanks to Shelby McTeer, Ron Haddock, and the 1973-74 Tomahawk Staff, because without them this yearbook wouldn't be possible. So to all these people we say ... Co-Editors Donna Bahney Evelyn Warner ,'Vk. h t ■ .... tms rl ( V ■ • mm f Y % AH:?
