The Student Council is made up of two representatives from each class in the High School and Junior High. The main projects for this year were the assembling of a tool kit for loan to any school organization and the preparation of the Student Council’s first student handbook to be distri- buted to the students at the beginning of next year. The revenue for the Student Council comes from the Coke machines and the Juke Box. Decorating the Christmas Tree was one of the projects of the Student Council. Some of the chapter activi- ties for the past year were: the Mother - Daughter Tea, Sadie Hawkins Dance, Daddy Date Night, Fall Dance, Family Fun Night, and participation in National F.H.A. week. The Section 14 Sweet- heart Dance was held at Neoga this year. Nancy Greeson was Section 14 Recreation Leader this past year. Linda Short has been elected Section Vice-President for the coming year. During FHA Week, a rose bush was planted outside of the Home Ec room. One of the outside activities was the Sadie Hawkins Dance at which Marryin Sam (Coach Greene), was featured. Marryin Sam per- formed marriages by the authority of Dog Patch. Along with the monthly business meeting, an interesting program was held. The foundation of the organization is built upon leadership, co-operation and citizenship. Some of the activities of the Neoga Chapter for the past year were: a trip to the National Convention at Kansas City, and also a trip to the State Convention at Springfield, Illinois. Participation in the Section Parliamentary Procedure Contest with Tom Schutte as a first place chairman. A corn picker safety campaign, and a rat control campaign, as community service activities. They also held the Section 20 Grain and Poultry Show at Neoga. The high light of the year was the annual Parent and Son banquet. Clem Hilmes is the Sectional vice-president, which is also a State of- fice. Anita Peters was chosen as the Chapter Sweetheart, representing Neoga at the first Sec- tion F.F.A. Dance. HD Mr. Leming. Prep Journalists Attend ISHSPA Approximately 900 high school newspaper and yearbook editors, their staffs and advisors, attend- ed the Illinois State High School Press Association on the Univer- sity of Illinois Campus, last Fri- day and Saturday. The meeting was highlighted by special interest discussions, four convocation addresses, ex- hibits, and the annual Funfest. Glenn Hanson, ISHSPA director, reported that this year’s conven- tion featured a record number of divisional meetings, each design- ed especially for faculty, year- book, newspaper, editorial, or business delegates. Theodore Peterson, dean of the College of Journalism and Com- munications, spoke at Friday’s meeting on Marilyn Monroe, Mickey Mouse, and the Editor’s Pencil. R. GUCKER FLORIST School Band Concert A Success The eleventh annual Spring Concert was given May 2 to a sizeable crowd in the high school gymnasium and as always, the concert proved to be a success. The high school band, comprised of 40 junior high and high school students and the high school and junior high choruses, directed by Mrs. Holladay, were featured at the concert. This year the band played 12 numbers, some of which were “The Iron Count, “Lazzus Trom- bone, a special for trombones, the score from “My Fair Lady, and the “Original Dixieland Con- certo, which featured Karen Buchanan on cornet. Special numbers were “Valse Renene, a clarinet duet by Rick Jakle and James Foltz and “Star Dust.” a trombone duet by Larry Foltz and Linda Short. Another spe- cial arrangement, “Meditation.” was done by the band spot- lighting Peggy Short on flute and Nancy Greeson on the piano. American folk songs, “Blow the Man Down.” “Red River Val- ley, and “Lonesome Road. were junior high choral selections. The senior high chorus sang a medley of show tunes composed by Kern, Porter and Gershwin, among them such tunes as “Make Believe, “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes. “Begin the Beguine and “Swanee. The chorus closed with two devotional songs, “The Green Cathedral and '‘Sanctus. Following the concert, a recep- tion was held in the cafeteria. The reception was sponsored by the Parent-Teachers Associations of Etna, Pioneer and Neoga, and the Trowbridge Mother's Club. Karen Buchanan receiving special music award at Awards Assembly Music Students Have Enviable Experience The Neoga music department sent its quota of six students to the 10th annual Illinois All-State Music Activity held at Peoria last Friday and Saturday. Mrs. Louis Buchanan chaperoned the group. Boys were quartered at the Pere Marquette Hotel and girls at the Jefferson. Two students took part in the band divisions. Karen Buchanan played cornet in the senior band, and Karen Morrison played clar- inet in the junior band. Those in chorus were Monty Gordon, Lcs- ter Burton, Judi Price, and Peg Short. The choral group put in a total of nine hours’ practice dur- ing the two-day stay, they found the rehearsals stimulating and report it a thrilling experience to sing with 625 chorus mem- bers. The purpose of the club was to raise the standard of athletics and to be of service to the school whenever possible. A similar club existed a few years ago. The only qualification for membership was the winning of a major letter in any sport. Members sold license plate emblems to start their treasury. The theme, “Fairyland Fan- tasy,” was carried out in pink, green and white. The false ceil- ing was pink, the false walls green, pink and white. In one end of the gym was the stage, decorated with brick Da per and grass. On the stage was the throne. The punch was served from a rose covered wishing well, and balloons were hung about the room. Seniors On Trip To New Orleans Monday morning the dream of the Neoga High School senior class turned to reality as the class boarded the Illinois Central “City of New Orleans,” for their trip to the historical city and the Gulf coast. The trip was financed with funds raised during their four years in high school by selling magazine subscriptions and household products, sponsoring food sales, and the profit from their class play. Total cost per member was $58.60 from Neoga and includes round-trip railroad transporta- tion, all breakfasts and evening dinners, room accomodations at Ocean Front Hotel, motor sight- seeing tour of New Orleans, visit to New Orleans docks and Canal Street, motor tour of Gulf Coast seashore, dinner at famous New Orleans French restaurant, an evening in Memphis, one full day in New Orleans, visit to Gulfport, two days and nights on the beach, every necessary expense except luncheons, also the services of a Burkett Tour Director who accompanies the group.
