Student Council The Student Council of Nelson County High School is one of the most important organizations in our school. There are twenty-five members on the council. At the beginning of this school year, each student was appointed to one of the eight different committees of which the council is composed. These committees and their duties are as follows: Program -- Provide enjoyable programs to be presented to student body at assemblies. Finance-- Provide any money needed by council to meet its financial needs. Building and Grounds-- See that school property is cared for and kept neat. Social and Recreational-- Provide wholesome recreation for student body. Health-- Promote better health habits for entire school. Safety-- See that safety is emphasized more in school. Cafeteria-- Promote better behavior in cafeteria. Welfare-- Promote better welfare for our school. These committees have already started many of their projects. Among the things achieved are the establishment of an honor-system study hall and sock hops. They have proved quite successful. Other things done by the Student Council to better Nelson County High School are the collecting of food for baskets for needy at Christmas, providing tours of our school for seventh grade students through¬ out the county, and the fixing of a bulletin board on safety. Along with the already mentioned accomplish¬ ments, twenty students attended the district Student Council Association meeting at Albemarle High School. This will be held at Nelson next year. At the present time three members are looking forward to attending the state convention to be held at Mary Washington this spring. Now plans for a school song contest are under way, and the obtaining of a state flag is another cur¬ rent project. Even though we have many hopes and aims, the real purpose of this organization is to develop good citizenship, provide wholesome recreation, furnish opportunities for self-improvement, and pro¬ mote a better understanding between faculty and student body. The motto, Service through the Co-operation of All, expresses something very important. To keep the Student Council going we need everybody’s help. 20
