NELSON COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL •55 - ' 56 September 3, 1955 - the first year at Nelson began with 606 students enrolled. Barbara Nelson was chosen president of the Student Council October 14, 1955 - Pat Gentry reigned as queen at the Homecoming Game. October 31, 1955 - Student Council sponsored a Halloween Carnival with all clubs participating. November 18, 1955 - At the dedication of our school, the portrait of the late W. E. Kidd, our former superintendent, was unveiled. In our first football season we had one win, three losses, and three ties. December 13, 1955 - Mike” Campbell received the football award at the banquet. Frank Mosley was the guest speaker. December 17, 1955 - Our Music Department gave its first Band and Choral Concert under Mr. Sanger ' s expert direction. Basketball Season - Governors: 4 wins, 16 losses. Governettes; 6 wins, 6 losses. Class and Faculty basketball games. Ella Wood Browning won the essay contest sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. March 1956 - Various Spelling Bees were held to determine the county champions. They were Fannie Goolsby and Reba Mays. March 24, 1956 - Our superior band won a trophy at the District V Spring Festival. May 3, 1956 - The track team won the District IV Cha mpionship. May 3, 1956 - The baseball fans watched our first game under lights. May 11, 1956 - Pat Gentry was named Miss Nel¬ son County in the beauty contest finals. Baseball Season - 6 wins, 10 losses. May 26, 1956 - Spring Concert May 30, 1956 - Veteran ' s Memorial Athletic Field was dedicated. Boyd Huffer was selected as the outstanding senior athlete. Dixie Peterson and Arthur Tate Massie were the honor students of their classes. June 6, 1956 - First commencement exercises. Seventy-eight seniors received diplomas. 8

CARTER Superintendent of Schools In the short time that he has been superintendent of the schools of Nelson County, Mr. Carter has won the admi¬ ration of its people by dealing wisely with the problems that have come through his office. Though his jobs are multitu¬ dinous, he never loses sight of the fact that the schools are for our youth - that above all, it is important to meet the needs of every individual child.
