THOMAS NELSON, JR. , 1738 - 1789 (At age of 16) Nelson County was named in honor of Thomas Nelson, Jr., third governor of the State of Virginia. It was symbolic that the newly established county should bear his name. Thomas Nelson, Jr. was a man of accomplishment in the cause of American independence. He was a delegate from Virginia to the Continental Congress and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. When Cornwallis surrendered atYorktown, ThomasNelson, Jr. was there. Although governor of Virginia at that time, he participated in the siege of Yorktown. His rank was that of Major General in the American Army. Thomas Nelson, Jr. was a man of wealth, but this wealth was spent freely in the cause of liberty. ThomasNelson, Jr., Virginia gentleman, patriot, soldier, and statesman, we salute your memory on this one hundred fiftieth anniversary in the history of Nelson County. 7
