It seems that some people may have three or four hours of free mods on o particular day, while some have only two or three free mods. The decision of how to spend the free time is on individual one, and every student uses their time differently. Most students divide their time proportionally into study time and relaxation time. The resource centers and media center are the best places to catch up on homework and to study. The commons is the place to talk with friends or just sit and have something to eat. Some students prefer to relax in the media center with 0 book or magazine. What- ever the choice is, Armstrong has a variety of places to spend a free mod. Are we at Armstrong representative of the fosh- FOIIOWing Falcon FGShiOn ion world - totol Chic, dressed, as they say, Hfit to kill ? Or, on the other hand, are we so isolated in the midwest that our only concern is keeping worm? It is probably most accurate to conclude that Armstrong is somewhere in the middle - 0 happy medium of modern foshion, comfortable clothes, and our own peculiar fads. Calvin Klein. Gloria Vanderbilt, and Sosson are high fashion names which turn up often oround Armstrong. On the more practical side of clothing, Lee, Big Smith, and the Limited are likely to be found on the tags. Certoin styles seem to hit Armstrong particularly hard such as: overalls; tight, straight - leg jeons worn with high, spikey heels; jeon skirts with slits; turtlenecks sprinkled with tiny hearts; ploin flonnel shirts Che old clossici; clogs mow for guys as well as girlsy and cowboy boots. It is hard, then, to classify Armstrong's foshions into one category; although there are many fods and styles that everyone seems to conform to, it is also 0 matter of individuality. A QuoIiTy ProducTion , Vaaw, M w The Sad Story Of TTBoat PeopleT One of The more Tragic evenTs of 4979 was The cosTing ouT of The so-colled HboaT people. Who are The booT people? They are The VieTnamese refugees who es- caped by sea To SouTheosT Asia. Because of hosTiIiTy beTween Hanoi and Peking, The eThnic Chinese in VieT Nam were The vic- Tims of onTi-Chinese prejudice and were finally driven ouT of VieT Nam. This motto is one often proven accurate by high school students. Armstrong stu- dents especially, are active in everything from downhill ski- ing to National Honor Society. This school spirit and pride is exemplified by The great number of people who share Their talents to give Armstrong student life a variation from class- room study. School spirit runs high during fall and winter quarters when Homecoming and Sno Daze approach. Students enjoy vol- unteering their Time To be on Teams for frisbee, broomboIl and fug-o-wor, 0nd shamelessly display talents in variety shows and pep fes'rs. Each year several new acTiviTies and ideas are added To ArmsTrong's celebroTion weeks, allowing more sTudenTs To become creoTiver involved. School organichions conTinue To prosper by sTudenT's added enThusiosm. With six returning ietter-winners and promising talent from the juniors and sophomores, the girls seemed destined for a winning season. Captains Lynn Morris and Cheryl Schindler encouraged team practice early in July to start developing skills before the beginning of the sched- uled season. Numerous scrimmages and non-conference games gave the girls needed experience to Victoriously overcome their Lake Con- ference opponents. Through the guidance of Coach Denny Erickson and Assistant Coach Bev Koski, the girls ended the season in a three- way-tie for tst place due to their loss to Eisenhower. The team also won the 3rd place trophy in the Armstrong-Cooper invitational Tournament. As the girls entered regional play ranked 2nd in Region 6AA and 7th in the State, injuries overwhelmed the team; but due to their depth. back-up players filled the positions giving the team top performance. All previous wins did not matter now and any losses were used as learning experiences. The Falcons downed their first two opponents Richfield and Minnetonka to advance to Region Semi-Finals against Eisenhower who had pre- viously handed them a loss. The girls came out on the floor spirited and used teamwork to beat Eisenhower in two straight games. As under- dogs in Region Finals, the Falcons faced iH ranked Wayzata the next night. Victorious after the Wayzata game, the Falcons began prepar- ing for their trip to the State Tournament. They had reached their initial goal, but now established a second goal of coming home State Cham- pions. Their dreams were shattered as Minneapolis Southwest downed Arm- strong in a match the Falcons hoped to win. The State Championship was gone. but the girls were determined not to come home losers. The team pulled together and found the pride and strength to come back and win the Consolation Championship by beating Apple Valley and Moorhead. Compiling an overall record of 24 wins and 4 losses, the Falcon Volley- ball team found that teamwork was the key to their success and look back to their season with a feeling of accomplishment. After attending a cheer- leader camp, four girls introduced new cheers and ideas to help boost school spirit. The new cheers took hours of practice to learn and perfect; but with a group of hard working, dedicated girls, anything was possible. The squad members felt a special closeness to the teams this year. Feelings of satisfaction came from knowing that the teams appreciated the little things we did, like baking cookies, making posters, or staying late after school to decorate lockers. Without the help of Virginia Thompson, the squad's advis- er, new ideas, uniforms, or cheers would not have been possible. Everyone involved in cheerleading was willing to give much more than was expected. All these factors allowed the girls to be proud of being cheerleaders, and made the ttnew look in '79-'80 possible. BIRD TALK: Being a mascot for Armstrong is something really different and special. Our favorite thing about be- ing ttthat crazy bird was making fools out of ourselves anytime, anywhere and we always did! Being behind that mask brought out the craziness that we had man- aged to conceal between games. However, there was a serious side to it all; we practiced hard, learned new cheers, and tried to bring out the real AHS spirit, even when we were down. We may not have always been sophisticated out there, but we sure had a lot of fun! Can you tell who won the Osseo game? A-SQUAD-Front Row: T. Rivezzo, K. Vogelsberg. Row Two: J. Johnson, K. We ordered white sweaters, not lime green! What?! We have to have a dance done in four days? nI thought summer vacation meant sleeping in, not wak- ing up at 6 am. to practice! tth-oh . . . Aren't these pom poms waterproof? Can we stop smiling now? I think my cheek muscles are gonna get stuck. But none of that compared to the fun and unity felt by all. A dance perfected, or a close game won gave us satisfaction and pride. We enjoyed the spirit we helped lead and the friendships made that will be kept forever. In addition to meeting people stote-wide, students compete in humorous and serious poetry, prose and drama, significant speeches and discussion cote- gories. Declom is thinking nothing of students talking to walls and lockers. It's hours of talking to yourself in front of a mirror in preparation for contests and trying to explain to parents that yes, I am feeling ok. Deciomotion is lots of talking. listening to critiques of judges, rewriting, reorga- nizing your material and talking some more. CHESS CLUB-Yes, Armstrong, there is a chess club. The team, operating under- ground for many yeorse, has finally come out into the open. Every Tuesday between the months of October and January, 0 motley bond of students converge upon the English Resource Center. They wait for Mr. Norton, who takes them to North High to fight for the greater good of Armstrong and mankind in general. Chess doesn't seem to fit into the normal high school image. For this reason, it is usually treated with a note of sarcasm. You guys should really bring along some cheerleaders. or Are you getting psyched up for the big game tonight are 0 few of the comments normally given. But, all things considered, this sarcasm is all given in good fun. At best, with chess we'll have something to do when we get old . . . DEBATE- The Armstrong debate team has always been a winner, and this year was no exception. Led by coaches Randy Truliinger and Doug Jorenby, AHS debotors competed with the best in national and state level tournaments, with Armstrong usuolly prevailing. A solid novice squad assured tradition will be upheld in coming years. The topic, US. foreign trade policies, was the broo- dest in years and offered wide interpretation. The team produced cases ranging from a plan to export nuclear weapons to iron - delivered by ICBM - to the more sober consideration of our tariff and arms policies. Overnight tournaments in Iowa and Duluth gave the team a chance to escape from starch, balloons, and air raids. Aside from John Spevocek's observation that We can't have naked soldiers. We just can't, little detered the team from exploring alternatives, within state high school league rules, of course. All in oil, the overnighters proved popular and lucrative, as did the year as a whole. The Armstrong debate dynostycontinues. NOVICE-Front Row: P. Spevocek, B. Boskin. Back Row: J. Bergseth, S. It consists of one representative from each of the various clubs, groups and athletics, SAB organized Homecoming, Sno-Doze, and the prom. The pep-fests, dances, and music joms were also put on by the SAB. AHS HOSTS- The AHS hosts ossist new students when they enroll at Arm- strong. The group helps these people their first few days to become more comfortable and accustomed to the school. The group helps newcomers to become orientated and explains to them the Armstrong woy. AUDlO-VISUAL- The students who work in AV have many important re- sponsibilities that go unnoticed. They deliver equipment to classrooms and provide learning tapes for the foreign language students. AV people also can be found in all large groups running the films and maneuvering the lighting and visual effects. AV requires a lot of hard work and dedication. AEA- Armstrong Environmental Agency has been very active this past year with various projects such as constructing the split rail fence that surrounds the back Iown, increasing the tree population of the woodlot, and building 0 bridge over the pond. The bridge gave biology classes on opportunity to view wildlife in its natural habitat. A Two members of the club, Sue Bloom and Bob Everhort, were chosen by the Safari Club International to attend the American Wilderness Leadership School in Jackson, Wyoming this past summer. The present as well as the future holds many unexpected rewards for those who are willing to con- tribute extra hours and efforts. The process is begun by choosing a yearbook staff. This year our expanded staff brought with it more enthusiasm, confusion and hunger than any Gyre staff had expressed in years. Our first task was to become experienced in the itArt of Yearbooking which con- sists of retaining a sense of humor to remain sane when film is exposed, and there are no pictures or copy. Next, we had to eat. We were connoisseurs of all types of good things to eat . . . gallons of pop, pizza, McDonalds and bags of Doritos, sunflower seeds and licorice. What is not shown on these pages are the amusing-sometimes disgusting, captions, the pictures that almost went in upside down, the laughs and tears of deadlines and the desperate cries of the staff screaming HUGGETT! In spite of the screaming, hunger pangs, and disgust- ing captions, and through the contributions of effort, time, and energy, the 1980 Gyre was created. New Freedom . . . New Fun . . . What do these three things have in common? They all describe the experiences of Armstrong's thirteen foreign students this year. That's right, this year there were more students from foreign countries than ever before. The majority of the students come from Scondinovio, with Kristina Motts- son, Lorsolo Lundquist, Loviso Lennstrom, Patrick Regner. Mortin Otterstedt, Hokon Ulrichs, Lors Nilsson from Sweden and Finn Mjorum from Norway. Other students included were Rob Schuyt from Holland, Beatriz Velorde from Bo- Iivio, Florian Koul from Germany, Rodrigo Loro Resende from Brazil, and Atsushi Soito from Japan. Coming to a foreign country involves Ieorning many new customs. One student come here with an unusual misconception: When I come to Armstrong for the first time, I watched many students' socks to see if they wore white ones. To my surprise most of you wore white socks. Before I come here, my English teacher handed us 0 piece of paper about right clothing in USA. It said, Do not wear white socks with jeans or other trousers. White socks are a sign of o Nerd . A nerd is not 0 popular person. He is a kind of person that everybody laughs at. He is o foolish person. Do not wear white socks. Finding out that 0 lot of students wear them, I wrote a letter to my English teacher in Japan, I. . . I found 9096 of American high school students were nerds, and I am one of them.' Uhot English teacher is on American woman who is 26 years oldJ Atsushi Soito Not only do foreign students have misconceptions of American customs but American students have miscon- ceptions of foreign customs. Patrick Regner has dealt with this problem hundreds of times. uWhere are you from? Sweden. IIOh yes, with all those Alps and mountains? No, that's Switzerland, Sweden, What's your name? IIPotrick. Aho, Pat. What's the last home? Regner Regnirrr? Are there really so many good looking girls in Sweden? Yes there ore!!! Don't the girls shave their legs in Sweden??? Hm, I don't know, but I haven't seen 0 girl with hairy legs yet. When can you get a driver's license? At eighteen. Eighteen? Oh, we can get it at sixteen. IIWhere do you live in Sweden? In Kumolo. HKoo mlo? Where's that? In the south of Sweden, 2-3 hours drive from Stockholm. Do you like it here? Yes, I really like it here! The foreign students really seem to enjoy it here. It's on experience they will never forget. Some things they feel they will always remember ore; homecoming, football games, school sports, quarter pounders with cheese, pepfests, cheerleaders, ond homeroom. Utlo'ndsko Ansikten As Novos Fooes 116 Ausslondische Gesichter The feelings shared by all of Armstrong's foreign students are best expressed by Rodrigo Lora Resende, iiWhen I look at what I have done before and have left behind in this wonderful year, I can see that people are people all around the world; even though a little bit different, with other habits and cultures they are the some human be- Coros Expronjeros Front Row: Finn Mjorum, Martin Otterstedt, Florian Koul, Kristina Mottson, Lars Nilsson.
