GYRE 1979 Neil A. Armstrong High school Plymouth, Minnesota Volume 9 Even before walking into school after summer vacation, students saw, or rather felt, a new addition, speed bumps. These were greeted by cringes, , grimaces, and a few choice words. However, the obstacles did not hinder students from starting the 78379 school year off with more spirit than ever. Several staff positions shifted, and juniors and seniors saw many confused faces trying to adjust to the Armstrong system, besides the sophomores. The bookstore added a new dimension to its menu. Health foods, such as yogurt, granola, and raisins were offered, ealong with old favorites. Lockers were removed from the lower commons area and relocated on the second floor. Concrete bases served as a reminder of what had been. Not as tangible, but very noticeable was an increase of student enthusiasm and participation in special events. Students seemed to take more pride in themselves and the school. Homecoming festivities drew students together in a spirit of companionship like never before. Having changes at school in not a new idea, but they serve as a continual example of growth and development, which are so important to a high school preparing its students for life on their own. Careful planning of the celebration paid off as new activities were started and old ones caught fire. Anxious students, faculty and other spectators gathered on the back lawn transforming it into the site of the royal coronation. Armstrong,s rekindled homecoming spirit was launched with the crowning of King Charlie Tsatsos and Queen Sandy Harrer. Color was added to the week by dress-up days and resource room decorations. Prizes were awarded for the most original entries in both. Excitement mounted with qualifying matches in tug-o-war, armw- restling and skateboarding. New events such as disco dancing and frisbee teams sparked more student participation. Fridayls Pep- fest hosted finals for all contests, and two new events. A chal- lenge yell between football and soccer fans resulted in a pie in- the-face of the soccer captain as a reward for the loudest cheers. Competitors in the trike race charged across the wooden track showing their skill to the amusement of the spectators. The Dating Game, Florman,s Teen Angel, and musical numbers were just a few of the highlights of this years variety show. Football and soccer teams scored victories on Friday and Satur- day nights to top off a fun-filled Falcon festival. For one week, Armstrong was more than just a school. Offering a wide interest range to young people, activities in the Twin Cities are as numerous as the students themselves. For getting out and having fun, students can choose among dozens of movie theaters featuring one of the latest productions. Others take advan- tage of the variety of theatrical, musical, and edu- cational programs available in the community. Ex- cellent facilities for fine arts are accessible. .r F alcons Fast-food restaurants are maintaining their popu- larity for meeting with friends or grabbing a quick meal. Late night or early breakfast eaters frequent the nearest pizza place or Perkin,s. Athletically inclined students spend leisure time enjoying tennis, skiing, jogging, or playing a quick game of touch football. Good ski areas, parks and lakes are close to home providing opportunities for all types of exercise. Metropolitan spectator sports include everything from football to softball. Armstrong students find that leisure time provides chances for both fun and personal growth. McDonald's L 15 WWI, vrw A Cactus Flower Blooms at Armstrong Armstrongts fall play, ttCactus Flower, brought the tangled love lives of four New York City dwellers to the stage. Once a Hollywood movie, the story presents the humorous side of falling in and out of love. The cast of twelve, numerous crew members, and directors Gary and Carol Fischer devoted themselves to the production for many weeks. Their de cation paid off as the five perfor- mances ran smoothly delighting the audience each night. Action took place in four different settings in downtown Man- hattan. All the scenery, designed by Dick Leerhoff, was beauti- fully constructed, as has become characteristic of all Arm- strong theatrical productions. ttCactus Flowerh communicated some of the shortcomings of our lifestyle, but it also entertained and excited both those who viewed it and those who put it on. Last fall, while most of us were worrying about the latest fashions for the new school year, or getting a new set of folders, other students were preparing to travel hundreds of miles to study in foreign countries. Six students found their way to Armstrong, and two Armstrong students ven- tured into different cultures. From Sweden, Anders Arsrud, Anna-Lena Larsson, Eva Gustavsson, and Johan Billgert arrived to spend the year. They were joined by Hiroko Soga of Japan. Housed with families in the Armstrong area, they crossed over both cultural and language barriers to take part in extra-curricu- lar activities, in addition to full class loads. At the same time, Kathy Dunn and Paul Lundgren, two seniors, found themselves across the seas. Kathy spent the year in Denmark, where she moved to different families, but attended the same school. Paul lived in South America for the year. All these students will remember their experiences for years to come, and the friendships theylve made will last beyond their return home. 21 Sno-Daze A Whirl Of Activity Sno-Daze '79 combined many new events with traditional ones to provide a much needed break from the February blahs for both students and staff. An outdoor coronation and relay race started off the week. Seniors Susan Bye and Lenny Bart were crowned king and queen. The rest of the royalty included juniors Kathy Vogers! berg and Dave Nash, and sophomores Bobbie Blanz and Ed Togel. Juniors proved they could out-ski, out-snowshoe and slide faster than the other classess. Broomball attracted more participants than ever this year. Co-ed and girls and guys team competed all week long with finals on Friday. Two new contests were added this year. Backgammon challenged many students and Lenny Bart was victorious. Token bouncing became the new fad as students practiced in theicommons and tokies flipped in the halls for weeks after the contest. The snowball eating contest was won by the seniors. Students elected Craig Johnson and Ann Dooher to be this year's Mr. and Mrs. Wonderful. Once again, the week closed with a dance at the Hopkins House on Saturday night. 22 CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT: Junior Andrea Johnson digs in. 1979 Sno-Daze Queen Susan Bye and King Lenny Bart. Armstrong's version was adapted and directed by Gary Fischer. Many students and staff members put in long hours to bring the production together for the March eighth opening. Wooden risers covered in bright car- peting set the stage for the singing and dancing. This year,s play was truly a group effort as students shared almost equal parts, and as always they were supported by numerous behind-the- scenes crews. All those involved in the play made personal sacrifices of time, often prac- ticing late into the night. Rest breaks were taken in the comfortable audito- rium chairs. Mixed in with the work were a lot of good times in which friends were made and the responsibil- ities and challenges of performing in a musical production were met. ttFree to Be was an enjoyable and refresh- ing Spring break. 26 FAR LEFT: Kym Anderson and Jeff John- son get in step. In the case of this team, the numbers were not the final score. Matches were always close but not within grasp. Superb effort and determination were noticeable in the play of all team members. The unusually large team, consisting of 26 members, was entertained throughout the season by ice cream parties, mixed doubles with the guys tennis team, mother-daughter matches, and the Alumni match. Overall, the 1978-1979 girls tennis team was a success for all of the participants. The people and the activities combined kept spirits high and the team moving. ABOVE: Capt. Coached by Rick 8ziiHarvii Kleyman, Kirk Elias, and Gary Lee, the 1978 Arm- strong cross country team consisted of ninety-five runners. They complained about injuries, bad weather, disappointing performances, and strenuous practices, yet they persisted, enjoying the success of both teams. A high point of the season for many participants was the superiority of their coaching and program. After- ward, Coach Kleyman said, uThis goes down as one of the greatest days in Armstrong cross country history, and weive had some good ones. Inspired by an infamous Jerry Jeff Walker song, and a running guru named Derwin McGerr, the boysi squad overcame a lack of customary depth to qualify for the State Meet for the seventh time in nine years. In September, however, even making it to State seemed improbable. A fourteenth place finish at the Early Bird Meet disheartened the team and shattered any of their immediate expecta. tions. Overshadowed by the girlst victories and unranked, the boys dedicated themselves to a steady buildup throughout the season. Seniors Rob Sauer, Craig Meyer, and Mike ttMilesi' Moher led the Falcons to third place in the Lake Conference. Two juniors, Scott Schepman and Jeff Nelson, added power to the top seven squad and were instrumental in the boys, second place region finish. Sauer also took All-Conference honors, with Meyer named to the second team. Three seniors, Kathy Kimble, Jane Anderson, and Donna Burke, gave the Falcon girlsi team the powerhouse quality it possessed. In addition, many talented undergraduates provided depth and strength to the squad. Despite stiff competi- tion for the top seven rankings, the girls retained a spirit of camaraderie. This unity, present all season, gave them confidence and excellence which led to outstanding individual accomplishments. Six junior varsity girls placed first through sixth at the tough Princeton Meet. All Conference honors went to Kimble, and for the third consecutive time, to both Burke and Anderson. Barb Bergseth won the Most Dedicated Award. At the State Meet, Kimble turned in a record time and attained AII-State status. For the second time in three years, they were once again champions of the State of Minnesota. Coach Kirk Elias shows his approval. Soccer - Alive And Kicking Front Row: J. Graen, B. Daly, T. A surprisingly successful 1978 season .continued the turnabout in Falcon soccer which began last year. After cleaning house in 1977, Al Shaft left coach Randy Moselle with a junior-dominated squad from which to build. Those under- classmen isix startersi teamed with the seniors to form what may have been Armstrongs best team ever. Compiling a conference mark of eight wins, two losses, and four ties-matching last year,s team for most points in a season by a Falcon soccer team - Armstrong entered region six play-off com- petition with hopes of winning the three required games and advanc- ing to a spot in the four-team state tournament. After beating 5. Louis Park 10 in the region opener, Armstrong kicked it out with Edioa-East for five overtimes until senior Bret Minger, who led the Lake North in scoring, got a goal to end one of the most exciting games in many years for a Falcon team. Only a showdown against district rival Cooper stood between Arm- strong and their berth in state competition. After falling behind by a seemingly insurmountable two goals, the Falcons fought back to tie the match with just five minutes to go. Once again, as it happened so often during regular season, Armstrong would play over-time to decide a winner. Not once during the season did the Falcons come out losing from one of these thrillers. However, luck was not with Armstrong that night, as they were defeated 3-2 by Cooper, who went on to win the state title. Gaining All-Lake Conference honors, for the Falcons were senior captain Keith Cameron, Minger, and junior Jim Byrne. Honorable mention went to senior fullback Tim Grangaard. Byrne also received an All-State honorable mention. Senior goalie Todd Gustafson was voted the teams most valuable player and Jon Eaton received the annual Skip Ditch award. 40 Junior Varsity: FRONT ROW: K. Crowley, D. Brokel, K. Barker, T. That phrase, plus dedication and talent were the key to the success of 1978 Girlis Volleyball team. Many hours of hard work developed skills to perfection. During the long, tiring prac- tices, a smile or two could always been seen, and State Tournament would linger in the minds of the players. Their hard work paid off. With an overall record of 21-7, they captured the District, Northern Division, Lake Confer- ence, and Region 6AA titles. Only State Tournament was left. This was the first year the Armstrong volleyball team participated in state competition. Excitement filled the air as Armstrong entered the court. The Falcons overpowered Coon Rapids in the first game, but couldn't hold on to win the match. Much had been learned when the tournament ended, and the Falcons returned home - with a smile. The J unior Varsity team traveled to St. Cloud to win the St. Cloud Invitational Tournament. Along with the winning season of the B-Squad, the dedicated teams hold promising talent for next year. A Year Of Rebuilding This yearis girlsi swimming team was an inexperienced one with only two returning seniors; therefore, this was a year of rebuilding. Lead by coaches Mitch Peterson, Rick Withers, diving coach John Bauer, and captains Karen Hagedorn and Bev Anderson the team made significant improvements. Each girl was dedicated to improving her own skills, and bettering the team. The team became a very close one, with everyone helping their fellow team mates. Problems with the pool plagued the team throughout the season. A high level of chlorine in the pool made it very difficult and harmful to practice. Overcoming many obstacles, the young team earned a rewarding eighth place at regionals. Many individuals qualified for, and placed in region finals. 44 Front Row: C. Rinder, K. Dungan, S. Brose, M. One such impossibility is a continuous state championship men,s gymnas- tic team. Last year was the first year in Arm- strongts history that it did not gain the state gymnastic title. This year was full of hopes for regaining that title. Rated second in the state for much of the year, the Falcons looked to be a favorite to win that title. However, their second place finish behind Robbinsdale in the region meet was not high enough to qualify them for state. The season was not at all a loss for many of the Falcons. Seven athletes from Armstrong,s small squad competed as individuals at state. These individuals included seniors Pearson, Waters, Whinnery, and Conlow, juniors Forslund and McNosky, and sophmore Schwimmer. Pearson, a Falcon tri-captain won the still ring state title. His scores earned him All-American honors in the event. 46 g , , MWW 6mm, . m .u, . . a. , y. Ww'mvwm - , viniwwgfmwggamwemm .w x , Ina! ; Basketball-Exciting . . . And Winning ' Behind a six-game winning streak early in the season, Armstrong,s menis basketball team rode itis way in the region 6AA play-offs with a second place standing in the Lake North Conference. On opposite ends of the streak were losses to Robbinsdale. Being conference champions and neighborhood rivals, the Robins provided the main stumbling block in the Falcons drive for a state tournament berth. Under the direction of Whitey Johnson, 14 year veteran coach from Cooper who moved over to Armstrong this season, the Falcons treated local fans with an exciting, moving and winning style of basketball. Senior guards Jon Calder and Bret Minger led the high-scoring Falcons through one of the best seasons ever for an Armstrong ball team. One of many highlighting moments during the year was the non-conference match against Coach Johnsonis alma mater, Eau Claire, Wis. In front of a packed Wis. crowd, the Falcons defeated their cross-state power. Front Row: D. Larson, Capt. J. Calder. B. Minger, D. Nash, P. Bordeaux, M. Daly. Row Two: Coach R. iiWhitey Johnson, M. Led by captains Steve Campbell and Doug Kujanson, the swim team worked together and swam their best. SO 51 Team Pulls Together Cutting weight, sweating and grunting through practices, enduring swollen fingers, bruises and bloody noses and exhausting oneself in a six minute match . . , all are part of wrestling. This years team had the almost traditional losing record, but there were times when the team pulled together and things went exactly right. Such times produced first place finishes in the Edina East and Tartan tournaments as well as a high finish at the tough Grand Rapids tournament. The wrestling team was spotted with standouts such as seniors Steve Hennessey, Rick Forster and Pat McDonough. Juniors Ken Graeber and Bill Hoffman, plus sophomore Joe Hansen offer high promise for next year. Despite a losing team record, the wrestlers showed theytre not Hlosers . 52 .1 Front Row: B. Kimble 55 Hockey-Shoots For High Goals High goals for the hockey team were set at the beginning of the season by both players and coaches. With 10 returning seniors and coach Bruce Johnson rejoining the team after a yeafs leave at Notre Dame, the team had had its hopes set on being one of the top four contenders in our region. Changes were made in practices. Scrimages and Hchalk talkst', became more prevelent. The pucksters had a lot of incoming and returning talent. They also had a lot of valuable experience. The captains, provided leadership, and became solid examples to the team. Unfortunately, the talent and experience were hindered by a lack of unity and individual confidence. However, the Falcons .did have a winning season. New Hope Arena was often packed to capacity, as fans came out to support the Falcons. Ftont Row: M. Mullen, D. Hegra, Capt. D. Jensen, Capt. D. Many varsity gymnasts returned again this year to anchor the team in all events, and helped their new coach, Bev Koski and incoming gymnasts adjust. Long hours of pain and hard work were shared by all. From December until March, athletic abilities were heightened, unity between team members developed, and meaningful friend- ships were formed. The depth, intense intersquad competition, and sincere enthusiasm towards skiing greatly improved the team from last year. As summer ended and the next school year resumed, practices began at 6:30 a.m. Through the morning frost, the steamy breath of the musicians rose as they stomped their way to perfection. The schedule of performances for the band was hectic. Starting off their iiseasonh by competing for the first time in the state fair marching band competition, they received third place in their area of competition. Other scheduled appearances included playing for the St. Olaf College Parenfs Day game, and performances at Armstrongis infamous football games, soccer matches and pepfests. Many hours of rehearsal and performances was given by all Marching Band members. Thanks to their dedication, enthusiasm, and talent, those students were a part of the largest and one of the best Marching Bands Armstrong has ever produced. 67 i Notes Of Achievement Band is more than a class that meets one hour every day. It involves other activities important to the curriculum, the school, and individ- ual success. Concert bands, both red and blue, and Symphonic band perform regularly scheduled concerts throughout the year at Arm- strong. They also compete in the state contest and travel to elemen- tary and junior high schools to present their music. Along with playing an instrument, emphasis on music theory, conducting tech- niques and score reading are also stressed. Band members help to support Armstrong athletic events through Marching Band and three pep bands. These extra-curricular activi- ties not only spirit the athletes but create a unity between band members. Jazz Ensamble I, another musical group at Armstrong, adds to the variety of music performed. Though it is a no-credit course, much time is put into this group to prepare for their concerts at Arm- strong, various colleges, and for civic groups. The success of these groups comes through individual success. There are always new goals to strive for. Perfecting a song, reaching a higher chair, preparing for solos and ensambles, or trying out for certain groups add even more reasons for many hours of practice. Band is more than hard work though. It is also smiles of success, friendship, and memories. Idle moments are few for an Armstrong band member. JAZZ ENSAMBLE l: FRONT ROW: G. Wesloh, D. Stensrud, G. Hodapp, T. Erick- son. ROW 2: R. Work was the watch word this year for the choirs. Lack of continuity, mid- year changes in leadership, and disorganization were all obstacles that probably demanded more dedication from members this year than any other. Rehearsals, testing, raising money, and working for hours towards an end result of perhaps an hour of performance. So what made all the work worth it? Why spend the hundred hours working for those one or two hours? The answer is the choir itself - a choir made up of good friends that make the work worthwhile. But it still comes down to work. And if the world is a little more beautiful for the work we put in, it will have been worth it. FRONT ROW: 5. Edgley, R. Bostrom, K. Kordell, T. Zaugg, D. Murphy, J . Leighton, L. Teig, L. Backes, R. The fourteen sophmore and junior girls on the line quickly learned that dedication, leadership and cooperation were elements required for a successful season. Their rigorous practices paid off when they were invited to perform at parades in Jordan, Robbinsdale, Lake City and Hopkins. Each Astronette participated in danceline activites as well. These included selling candy, dancing at the University of Minnesota Danceline Clinic, hosting several car washes, selling candles, dancing at the Armstrong pepfests and, of course, performing at the football and basketball halftimes. Being a member of the Armstrong danceline resulted in a closer educational and social environment for each girl. BIRD TALK - Being a mascot for Armstrong is an experience none of us will forget. It is difficult to explain the satisfaction one gets from being a birdie and supporting our teams. It teaches cooperation and friendship. But there is one side of being a Falcon that we value most. It was perfectly acceptable to make fools of ourselves and we did. Tying shoelaces together and draping toilet paper during cheers were a few pranks that were not always met with approval. But, being behind that mask always brought out the craziness and inhibitions were fogotten. We may not have always been sophisticated out there, but we sure had a lot of fun. FRONT ROW: P. Popp, M. As we practice in the Armstrong parking lot before the game, we find that the wind is blowing us away. Our flags are flying out of our hands, and wetre just struggling to hang on! By this time, wetre telling ourselves that it isntt going to be windy at Mielke, tsays whom. Itts finally our turn to go out and twirl our flags. As we run out our hearts sink to our feet, and we try to crack jokes to make each other laugh. After the first game it becomes easier and a whole lot more fun. But . . . . its not over yet - we still have our basketball games to twirl. An entirely new season, and new memories of our flagtwirling days at Armstrong. Who said Happy Days are in the 50's? Adding to the excitement of the season were the extra spirit boosters like TPfingi the playersi houses, potlucks and team parties. Fans joined in the excitement and added to the smiles of the squad. But there were disappointments also. After cheering for sever- al overtimes with frozen legs and wind-bit faces, a tension filled game ended with the Armstrong soccer team losing to Cooper by a score of 2 to 1. The teamis loss was shared by the cheerleaders and spirits drooped. Spirits didn,t stay low for long, however, when the squad realized the great friendships made and the successful year they had. Pom Poms - Excitement uLifeis been good to me so far? uYea, rah, rah, FALCONSV, And so it went many a summer morning. Alarm clocks going off at 6:30 a.m., our favorite Joe Walsh blaring all the way to practice, and then cheer after cheer after cheer. All this is preparation for the first game. Did it pay off? Maybe not in obvious ways because the first football game was as confusing as ever. But many lasting friendships and memorable times resulted, and so the early morning practices and many hassles did pay off. Even broken legs and losing members to Louisiana didnit sever friendships made this year. POMS: FRONT ROW: A. Middleton, 8. Nelson. BACK ROW: J. Schwecke, K. Swedberg, L. Orensten, C. Besselman, M. Irwin In previons years, Armstrong has had a student-faculty senate in which the students and staff worked together in making decisions for all of Armstrong. This year, however, a new government was designed, exclu- sively for the students. Armstrongls Student Government consists of a representative from each homeroom. A president, vice-president, secre- tary and treasurer were nominated and voted upon by'homeroom repre- sentatives of all three grade levels. This year's Student Government was very successful in planning and presenting a breakfast program, which had been discontinued since 1976. Also, a committee of government members presented a modified version of Robertls Rules of Order, to be used during Student govern- ment meetings. Another project, worked on, concerned the construction of a means of protection for school grounds from snowmobiles and other mobilized trespassers. If nothing else was gained through Student Government, it would be safe to say that it promoted student involvement, pride and concern for Armstrong, which is a success and honor in itself. 82 Declamation Declamation is an opportunity to meet students from all over the state. The emphasis in declamation is not so much on winning as it is on just doing the best that you can. Students compete in any of the four categories: prose and poetry, both serious and humorous, significant speeches and discussion. The responsibility of successful lighting and visual effects for the large groups rests on their shoulders. Dedication, hard work, dull jobs and little recognition are what A.V. is about. We soon realized the ropes of being a staff member: frequently staying after school, the frustration of trying to meet a deadline lacking the necessary photos, arranging and alphabetizing 2,000 student pictures plus But we also learned a few survival techniques; always have your sense of humor on hand, drink plenty of Coke, eat massive quantities of munchies, and learn how to make good excuses for not staying after school to work. In our continuous search for the meaning of life, lost photos, disappear- ing staff members and pens that write, there was always a common question which could be found on the lips of any Gyre staffer, HHow did I get suckered into this? We were careful, however, not to voice this question out loud in the heat of a late deadline for fear of an uprising whereas the Gyre would most likely become nonexistant. Along with the lost photos, we did find our answers - we never did find one pen. Being a minority responsible for making the yearbook for the majority of Armstrong was a responsibility we learned to carry. No, we didnit feel it was a burden carried in vain. After hours of hard work, a little sweat and cases of Coke, weire still happy . . i and proud. 86 I M. Huggett, M. Siems, C. Schindler, S. Miller, M. Hayter, B. Bonnin, J. Philpott, D. Klenk, D. Fortunately, for the sake of every odbodis sanity, this room has more uses than its initial impression gives. Writing, singing, eating, laughing, writing, listening, working, sleeping, dancing, and more writing has its place here. Behind the door, friendship and love grow, common interests are found, parties are planned and a newspaper is published. Publishing a newspaper is the hard part. Almost without realizing it, the Odyssey staff begins to acknowledge ifreedom of the pressi for themselves. Dealing with real, serious problems at AHS, the Odyssey is, in effect, a professional paper with responsible writers. Human rights, chemical dependancy and grading policies represent issues that concerned Armstrong, its students and the Odyssey staff. Odyssey Staff: FRONT ROW: Mary Hayter, C. Sutton. ROW TWO: M. Hosts Foreign faces not only consist of students fron. other countries but also those transferring from different schools and states. Helping to orientate students new to Arm- strong is a group of student hosts. These hosts help the new students adjust to their classes, the building, using ID. cards, and explaining Armstrongts scheduling system -- most of the everyday occurances we take for granted. Being a host is extending a helping hand and making new students feel at home. HOSTS: K. Campbell, C. Johnson, 5. Carter, J. Casey J. Ueland. Armstrongts Environmental Agency was a group of concerned Armstrong students, whose concern was for the appearance of the school grounds. They raised trees in the nature center adjacent to the smoking lounge, and planted them throughout the school grounds. During the winter A.E.A. sold popcorn at home basketball games and conduct- A E A ed other money making projects. The funds raised were then used to buy new tools and ' ' ' shrubbery for spring construction and planting. In March, A.E.A. constructed a foot bridge across the pond. .A.E.A. members had a great experience this year in learning about the out-of-doors, and an excellent opportunity for doing work they liked while having fun. Everhart 92 Debate The German philosopher Leibnitz de- clared, This is the best of all possible worldsf' Armstrong debators would agree with that, as their energy and resolve carried them to yet another successful season in spite of a reduced varsity, a change in coaching staff and an occasional wandering microwave beam. Head coach Randy Trullinger ad- mitted, uYeah, I guess lid go along with Leibnitz in light of this season? Trullinger, along with assistant coach Jo Ellen Pfiefle, led the 30 member squad to 8 trophies and many honor- able mentions, including a clean sweep of the Metro League speaker awards. Team captains Kelly Ehret, Mark Johnson, and Doug Jorenby worked with a very talented squad of novices who will be providing talent for the next few years. The J .V. is as strong as ever, despite a belief by some mem- bers that plutonium is edible. The var- sity netted several trophies, including a finals berth at the U of M tourna- ment. The season culminated in a heart-breaking one point loss at Re- gions to the team who went on to take the state title. Building from strong foundations, next year's team is already looking towards new conquests. As one member of the J.V. put it, iiHey, did you know that Silver Bay has a curling team? Novice: C. Many changes have occurred but the thread of iiresponsibilitgf' still is a vital part of the Arm- strong program. We have been blessed with excellent students who accept the challenge and, with a dedicated staff, they have excelled in all areas of school life. It was with this dream nine years ago that Arm- strong started and continues to strive for. It is indeed a privilege and pleasure to be at Arm- strong and work with the students, staff and parents, and assist in providing the best possible education.
