Armstrong Senior High School Plymouth, Minnesota Volume 8 The Games We Play .......32 The Things We Do .......68 The Ones Who Influenced Us The People We Are .......ll6 At last a new word can describe the people and situations at Armstrong--it's not apathetic anymore, it's changing. More than ever the building, the people, and the curriculum are changing. After years of drifting with the times a new Armstrong is beginning to emerge. We've picked up on the ideas of 76377 and are striking out on our own, in a new direction. Even the building received a face lift over the summer. Colored walls now adorn floor two and a half. A tiled wall, still clean, stands proudly in the cafeteria. At times the administration was forced to gently prod us towards needed change. The token system, like the segregated lockers, worked despite scorn. School spirit took off more than ever this year. The Homecoming revisions which started in l976, soared in l977. A committee dedicated to making this year the best went all out. New events and pagentry started the year out on a spirited note. From then on nearly every event and celebration drew forth more and more enthusiasm and participation. Armstrong High School continues to offer challenges and opportunities for those who wish to accept them. This year, however, the students began adopting for themselves, rather than simply accepting what was offered. A year of growth came to Armstrong in '77-78. A year of change for all who were willing to make things just a little better. What was that all about? It was just a beginning to the enthusiasm that overtook us during homecoming 77. That enthusiasm grew from day to day as Homecom- ing week went on. Excitement and fun included decoration of resource rooms by individual teams and later judged by captains and our queen, brat sales, car and skateboard contests and coronation. The Homecoming Variety Show featured brilliant bands, marvelous midgets. sensational singers. hilar- ious hair poems. and. of course, a guaranteed good time. The pep fest on Friday was a good indication of spirit. Accompanying the challenge yells. cheers. dances and the Armstrong Fight Song were arm- wrestling championships and changes in schedule due to rain UGHI Despite the weather, Thursday and Friday nights were host to soccer and football games where spirit abounded. No amount of griping to the admin- istration seems to help relax this oppressive dress code. I Therefore. most students feel obliged to purchase or obtain ' some sort of apparel before school starts The bikinis are banished to the back of the drawer and inventory is taken of ' last year's wardrobe. Next step, the typical student lists all of theitems he or she would like to buy in orderito enhance his or her appearance of wealth, sex appeal, and good taste. Though wearing clothes to school is a complex problem, some people find that rigid restrictions provide a creative chaI-I lenge. The ideals In Vogue underwent some alterations as ' teenage ingenuity, resourcefulness and poverty served to I Stretch every dollar. Skirts became in again, along with ruffles, lace and other romantic adornments. The new feminine look was well received and very much appreci- ated: 0f whistles. appraising glances and flowery compli- ments count for anythingD In spite of the abundance of boots, vests and suits, the unisex look was entirely avoided, as styling this year took a softer approach to the difference between the sexes. Not to be outdone, the guys cleaned up their act too. Fewer overalls. painter's pants and tattered jeans appeared in the halls as the best seats in town were reupholstered in neat corduroys, denim pants and - wow - even color coordinated pants! Hair styles this year were shorter on the boys, slightly longer on the girls, as their post - Olympic Dorothy Hamill cuts grew out. Fashions this year have been adapted and changed to the students interests and tastes, making this year, a rendition of the new and the old popular once again at Armstrong. . W... Hf - 'mkh mwwmw VNIMW Armstrong is situated on a tract of land, which not many years ago was as rural an area as you can find in Minnesota. A horse barn adjoins the school property, but within minutes of Arm- strong environs are all the attractions and diversions of the Twin Cities. Many students work and enjoy life in settings as varied as what the city has to offer. Students can be found enjoying such places as Dudley Riggs and Burger King. Minneapolis and St. Paul are cities of lakes and parks that are utilized in every season by Armstrong students. Shopping malls attract the younger populace of our nation in both cities. They provide opportunities and i 'v'oi w w r F vi . . l? l' , activities for many on evenings and weekends. Minneapolis and St. Paul offer a variety of cultural challenges. Cultural and educa- tional enthusiasts can find their niche in such places as the Guthrie theatre, Orchestra Hall and the Walker Art Center. Pro and semi pro sports also take up much of our time and energy. The Vikings, Kicks, Twins and the North Stars offer an outlet of energy for sports enthusiasts. The Twin Cities are a gathering place for the young and the old, where everyone is given the opportunity for enrichment in their own life. omwnm 40cm H.c....mH Hm mmmmwmw...wcwmmn Kwam...unbo m.8..1.WHnWm.n Hm Zauama...w00nvmpw nmamm...wnwmdmnm...xowm...mHo.oo ?n s womm noamnncnnwos...mwwmmm zwmrnm..umnmn zmnm... 0 do Hn ?HH won woc...0mmwnm mmcnmnwo: 0 II kom...mwadoq w: I. nmwuu .nwmuo...wnnouw 5 ,. .3355. . .35. . $33 xc ...Perkins...Cross Country w m an unro...wmw mmmnm...zonswsm 55055 d w m . m u G G Mamm...ZHmHWm meHm...mm w m .n H k 1 u o :0 . .1 1 1 q :H Y N ...mso Ummm... e 8 M . s . s . Love Var 30 ., 153 Hy Here And There Sometime during the winter of 77-78 a bright Armstrong student made an important discovery. Three young people had been roaming the halls all school year. No, not ordinary A.H.S. students. These students spoke with accents and occasion- ally took part in activities which were not quite American. These were Armstrong's foreign ex- change students. Taeko. Owen and Benedikt lived and studied with us for a year. We did our best to help them adapt. but it didn't always work. True, on any given day at least one of them could be found dressed .in Levis, but the big combs carried by the crazy Americans never did catch on. The language dif- ference didn't pose much of a problem. They did their best at English and most Armstrong students responded in a cheap imitation of Swedish, Ger- man, or Japanese. Somehow, the notion formed that foreign ex- change students are l007o quiet, reserved schol- ars. That may be true of other students from other countries but not ours. While the boys. did prove a bit more rambunctious than the girl, none of our scholars were particularly inhibited. Any- one doubting this may talk to a hornet from across the way who was kidnapped by the gallant Swede and his German sidekick. Meanwhile across the sea, Theresa Luksan en- joyed the Japanese culture. complete with the world renowned Japanese bathes. The senior years of these four students will be long remembered, by all. 20 Clockwise From Left: Owen Holmstrom- Sweden. Taeko Yokoyama- Japan. With many changes, but enough of Shakespeare to keep it traditional, Macbeth presented itself at the one-act festival in January. A pre-contest performance at Armstrong was received warmly as was the show at contest. It was received so well that it advanced on to another performance at state. Macbeth did not march on alone. A cast of eight prodded and pushed, along with director Dick Leerhoff, right up to the end. Trying to handle the language and atmosphere was no easy task. Long hours went into transforming high school actors and a high school auditorium into the setting for Macbeth. After the single performance at Armstrong, Macbeth was tan- gibly set aside until contest time rolled around. Many of the people involved in the one-act also took part in the musical, thus creating some busy days when the contest drew near. The set was bundled up and scurried over to neighboring Cooper. For one exciting afternoon everyone ran about, preparing for the performance. When award time came there were apprehensive students from five schools waiting in the auditorium. Cooper was named as alternate play for state, and the remaining casts eager- ly awaited the final decision. With a shout, Armstrong's cast acknowledged the judge's decision. It was onto state and one more fantastic performance of the play which had come so far. 23 Three sets of oddly arranged risers, two brightly colored blocks, and one dark stage. Countdown for an avant-garde choir concert? No setting for Armstrong's fall play, of course. An unusual set was not the only characteristic to distinguish Armstrong Revisited from your average high school play. Based on Armstrong's history, as faithfully recorded in past Odyssey's and yearbooks, the play was an animated docu- mentary of our school's first seven years. There were intimate glances into classroom, Iunchroom. and locker room life, as well as comments on the dreams and ideas that were as important as the bricks in building Armstrong. Audiences were in- troduced to Annabelle A. Student, George L. Scar- brough a younger version with hairi and the infa- mous Falbinhawk. There was a brief tour of the school, a trip to the principal's office, even a quick journey to the moon and all this was accomplished in a mere hour of entertainment. Behind that mere hour of shining entertainment were the less glossy hours of work and prepara- tion. Cast, director and crews spent many a night in mutual company when the company of good friends, good food or just a good night's sleep might have been preferable. There were rewards though. that made the hard work worth every effort. The chance to meet and make new friends. the enjoyment of performing a show and the sat- isfaction of knowing it was good, and the unex- pected pride we felt in being a part of A.H.S. In revisiting Armstrong, we saw its many positive aspects; hopefully the audience did too. 24 Armstrong Gets ABOVE LEFT: An in depth study of Armstrong. Revisited 25 God created weatherpersons to predict the climatic changes of the universe and to make poor jokes on the am news. However. what those gifted persons predict. and what actually happens in the weather world seldom coincide; particularly in the winter months. Thinking that they had made a safe assumption. most meteorologists predicted snow for the month of De- cember. How were those unsuspecting souls expected to know that the clouds and the free floating moisture were going to have a fight and refuse to cooperate to make that white. crystally stuff. commonly known as snow? But just like a fairy tale ending. snow did fall and fall and fall and fall. It also fell at Armstrong. AHS students thought they would do the ianitors a favor by bringing the snow inside so hours of shoveling could be eliminated. Unfortunately. the administration frowned upon the idea of snowballs in the school. and decreed that all snow was to be banned from the halls and classrooms of Armstrong. Students. artistic and not. together created unique ob- jects to be appreciated by all. Snowmen again proved to be the itl favorite in flake construction. but original snow sculptures followed a close second. The energy crisis provided the administration with a good excuse to lower the temperature in the building and most students accepted this with shivers. Fashion reached a new low and caused the biggest cover-up in Armstrong's history and students trooped up to the third floor to share the heat from the gas burners used in the science departments. Winter 77-78 will be frozen in the memories of those students who wish that Armstrong's winter wonderland will always be as they remember it. 26 Learning In Our Winter Wonderland 27 Hello Spring - Dolly In the spring of l978. Armstrong said. Hello Dolly. Hello Dolly opened in mid March to a packed house. For two weekends the cast and crews presented the end result of their hardwork, frustration and love. The long h0urs of devotion may not have been clearly identifiable, but all audience members felt the musical was much more than it appeared to be on the surface. The sets upheld the tradition of beauty and craftsmanship famous at Armstrong. These sets had been practicing their parts through the winter, with all of the students participating in the gala dramatic presentation. While most Armstrong students were home, snug in bed, a large number were still up at Armstrong refitting sets so they moved like clockwork. The actors and actresses were also repeating songs, dances, and scenes late into the night. Sleep was not the only thing set aside. Homework, too, had to be crammed into the days or choked down with a peanut butter sand- wich during a 45 minute dinner break. Was it worth it? Did the dancers, chorus people, leads, crew members, directors and promoters find Hello Dolly to be the play they dreamed about during the early days of winter? The smiles on stage and the happy tears back stage seemed to say clearly that Hello Dolly deserved every moment it got. FAR LEFT: Tom Leighton and Bill Bolt pay close attention. Sno-daze Warms Winter Armstrong's Sno-daze went back to the snow this year. S.A.B. members put their heads together and came up with a plan for an outdoor coronation and other fresh air events which students could participate in. The plan was a success, in spite of critics who felt Sno-daze belonged inside tafter all this is Minnesota; Coronation and the snow relay were held on Valentines Day. Seniors Jackie Orr and Chris Zaugg were crowned king and queen. Juniors Sherrie Saucier and Lenny Bart, and sophomores Sandy Brandt and Todd Zaugg made up the rest of the winter royalty. A snowball eating contest proved that the seniors, at least Tina Klingele and Tom Dellich, had the most voracious appetites. The winning relay team showed that the seniors were talented at something other than stuffing themselves with snowballs. The week of festivities was brought to a close indoors. All these things were the scenes along the St. Croix as the Armstrong CC runners roughed it for a week. This and much more led up to the I977 season. Putting an end to a summer of many miles, and a week of running in a national forest, propelled Armstrong's cross country teams into a promis- ing, yet uncertain season. A consistent turnout of more than eighty runners displayed talent but lacked experience and the confidence that comes with it. From this foundation, Coach Kleyman constructed a company both devoted and determined. Claudelle comes into the home stretch. Armstrong takes the lead. The year was climaxed by the annual Cross Country Banquet. 3S The fact that . . . We have the largest team in the State with plenty of depth. We won three big invitationals. We were Conference champs with an 8-0 record. Five girls were named All Conference. We were Region champs and fifth in the State, isn't important. What is important is the fact that we had fun. When people think of running the thought of boredom probably comes to mind quite often. That's not the case with our bunch of runners, or super coaches. We didn't just go run everyday for five or ten miles. we had quite a variety of workouts. There were days when we had water workouts at Elm Creek. Our hardest workout was probably the two-man-five-mile relay. It may have been the most difficult, but it was also extremely rewarding. Running workouts together, both guys and girls, also helped our team. There were problems with that; like having your shorts pulled down, and holes in sweats, and having to run Kleyman's mile. You give that guy a mile, and he takes two. A variety of workouts. high hopes and hard work made the l977 Girls' Cross Country season a success. ABOVE: Mile. yOu're on Candid Camera! LEFT: Jane shows Steph the way. If you think you are beaten, you are, If you think that you dare not, you don't, If you'd like to win, but you think you can't, It's almost certain you won't. If you think you'll lose, you've lost. For out in the world you'll find, Success begins with a fellows will, It's all in the state of mind. If you think you are outclassed, you are. You've got to think high to rise, You've got to be sure of yourself before You can ever win a prize. Life's battles donlt always go To the stronger or faster man. But soon or late the man who wins Is the man who thinks he can. 36 Striving to make up for last years narrow defeatvin regions, the boys' team worked through injuries, long hours, and adverse weather. This dedication resulted in wins at both the Alexandria and Blaine lnvitationals. On the Alexandria course, which Kleyman claimed was the toughest they'd ever see, an aII-senior squad put five runners in the top eleven. At Blaine, thirty-five boys ran their personal best times. These races, along with a constantly improving attitude, produced the confident spirit that Kleyman knew they needed. The final conference race ended and the team stood 7-l, their only loss to State Champion Burnsville. Two team members, Rod Den- zine and Neal Thorgrimson, qualified for All-Conference, while Craig Meyer and Dave Twomey received Honorable Mention. As the Region meet approached, the boys questioned their chances of reaching State. But their doubts proved unnecessary when they knocked favored Minnetonka out of the running. Their inexperience showed at the State meet; a too-slow start erased any possibility of as high a finish as they had hoped for. They placed eleventh. Although it proved to be anticlimatic, it could not take away what their hard work had given them: satis- faction in knowing that they had done what most teams never had the chance to do. Armstrong . . .7 Oh, that new British group? Although publicity did not flourish. the Armstrong soccer team did make a considerable mark in their '77 season by setting records. A total of eight returning lettermen started off the list as well as providing some early- season anticipation. The final record of l3-4-2 not only outclassed previous Armstrong records but also placed the team second in the conference. Upon ending the regular season, the team found itself having never been shutout - another unequaled feat. Beating Cooper and Edina-West brought them up against Edina-East in Region Finals -e the farthest any Armstrong soccer team has ever gone. Contraversial refereeing, as it had been too many times in the past, seemed to again haunt the team as it lost in the one-goal battle. Although unmeasurable, the l977 soccer team also excelled in another much more important area - unity. With many of the seniors having played together for over six years, this represented the closest team to come out of Armstrong yet. 38 FRONT ROW: C. Dirks, P. Lundgren, R. Badois, T. Gustafson, M. Goals were high and dreams were plentiful as the Falcon football team entered the '.77 season. Rated high in the state and a sure win in the Blue Division, the team felt that this was indeed the year for the Falcons. The bulk of last year's winning team returned with a number of talented juniors. However, the dreams just never came true. The first game was a win over Lindbergh. A big win that should have been bigger. The second game against Osseo was when the goals became dreams and the dreams began to vanish. A chance at state was gone and the chance at the Blue Division title was disappearing quickly. A loss to number-one rated Edina West completely erased the re- maining dreams of a title. After a Homecoming loss and a defeat to Lincoln, the Falcons finished their season with three consecutive wins. Final standings - 5-4. A long way from the predicted record. 50 what happened? Perhaps there was a little too much confidence at the start of the season. Maybe it was the oppositions strong desire to knock down the favored Fal- cons. Even the rain which appeared at game time for four consecutive weeks may have hindered the team. What- ever the reasons, they weren't enough to completely ruin the season. The Falcons may not have ended up the Gi- ants that they started out as, but they turned out to be one fine team. 40 41 A.H.$. Little Falcons Win Big Remember all those Thursdays last fall when you drove past Armstrong's practice field and wondered why all those people were watching the football squad, and why they kept cheering? Why, even the cheerleaders were out yelling for the guys. There's a simple explanation. You weren't seeing a practice at all. That was the sophomore football team playing, and winning. Coaches Dennis Reis and Dave Swano- vich led the guys through a 6-3 season. Perhaps in a way it was practice for next years shot at the big times, but for the sophomore players and fans it was a season of their own - a season to be proud of. ROW ONE: P. Schliesman. A. Moore. They also went on to become Blue Divi- sion champions, Lake Conference champi- ons and Region 6AA runners-up. Armstrong also held their second annual invitational tournament in which they placed fourth. Their coach, Dennis Erickson, led the team on to a successful season. The J.V. team also had an undefeated re- cord of 8-0 and took second place at the St. Cloud Invitational Tournament. The B-Squad had a good season for building up skills for next year's team. They had a record of 4-4. Sue Favere led the J.V. and B-Squad to their successes, and we can look forward to an- other great season next year. Junior Varsity e FRONT ROW: J. Zable, L. Brown, J. Why success with a 3-5 record and a sixth place finish at regionals? Because on the individual .level each swimmer made significant improvements in her- event. Workouts under the coaching of Mitch Peterson and Rick Withers varied in intensity in order to benefit each swimmer. Through the leadership of team captains Lisa Touve and Wendy Norberg, team unity was established and individ- ual friendships developed. At the regional meet nine swimmers advanced to the finals. Debbie Nelson turned in an outstanding first place dive at the meet, and finished tenth in the state. 47 and Splash CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE: The lone swimmer. Extra Effort Pays Off Trying to live up to five state gym- nastics titles caused some anxiety in l976. This year, living up to six titles caused even more worry. In spite of the tension the team put out a terrific effort and finished second in regionals, behind the ever threatening Robins. The first invitational meet against Fairmont satisfied many critics who felt that I977 would end the Falcon's winning streak. With the determi- nation and strength that has given Armstrong gymnastics its winning record the team lost just one regu- lar season meet, and that to Rob- binsdale. Captain Tom Jensen along with sec- ond year coaches, Roger and David Kuhn, pushed for the extra effort needed to lead the team toward the spot at the top. The hard work paid off in Armstrong's seventh guccess- ful gymnastics season. The state ti- tle may have been relinquished, but Armstrong still has a national re- cord and a team to be proud of. That is exactly how the Armstrong girls Tennis Team measured their season. Having a smaller team than last year and a new coach again this year didn't mar the enthusiasm of the '77 team. Even a win loss record that was just about equal didn't change the girls attitude as the enjoyment of the sport continued. Co-captains Laura Utoft and Suzette LaFrance along with coach Mona Klimmek led the girls through a season which could be called reward- ing, if not winning. These advances became evident at the region meet in early February. The successes paid off in place finishes for five Armstrong wrestlers, and outstanding per- formances by the entire team. Senior, Ken Audette placed first at his weight, earning himself a place at state. Captain Joe Besselman, and, junior Steve Hennesey placed third in 52 their respective classes. Gymnasts worked out through winter vacation, Saturday mornings, and late evenings everyday. every week. Were their efforts in vain? The season record would seem to indicate this could be true. That record, however, is not an accu- rate measure of this year's successes and failures. More impor- tantly it is the growth of each individual, and the unity of the team as a whole. Many times emotions ran high and frustrations mounted. Both the gymnasts and coaches learned that these obstacles could be over- come with hard work, team unity, and caring for one another. In the end dedication for the sport and a strong desire for improve- ment conquered petty emotions. Not in the sense of continually losing, but rather in never knowing. The games in which Armstrong was highly favored often turned into complete disasters. On the other hand, a pre- Christmas game at St. Louis Park was regarded as an impossible win, but the Armstrong Falcons proved the predictors wrong. The same spirit prevailed in a rematch with Bloomington Jeffer- son. Short spurts of bad luck left the win loss record lopsided the wrong way. Too often the schools narrowly defeated by the Falcons in the early season games, sought revenge, and found it. A rematch with powerful St. Louis Park left every- one wondering who the better team really was. All but two members of the varsity squad were seniors. Two years of experience at Armstrong propelled most of the squad. The eight seniors and coach Ed Cochrane all brought an end to their years of Falcon basketball, in a fine display at regions in mid-February. The first game found the Falcons up against Wayzata. In the second round of tournament play the season was brought to a close by the team from Eisenhower. As with the rest of the season, regions gave the Falcons a taste of success. 56 TOP CENTER: FRONT ROW: T. Morgan, J. Calder. R. Brewer. J. Wilder. J. Calder. BACK ROW: Ed Cochrane-coach, T. Epps, B. Coach Don Wolter and assistant coach Grant Locke began tough team practices early in November to prepare for seven meets in January and February. The team had a fine potential for a promising season, with such outstanding skiers as Steff Pinsky. Barb Bergseth. Charles Stockwell. Paul Scholl and Neal Thorgrimson. Unfor- tunately. after winning the first two meets the team was plagued by illness, thus handicapping the team for the re- mainder of the season. The icy season did not freeze the spirit of the team. The small, but powerful team of eighteen swimmers. highlighted the early season by upsetting arch rival Cooper. Plagued by illness, the team was held to a handicapped po- tential. Close losses to Burnsville and Edina West proved to be the cost. The team, coached by Dennis Reis, won more than four times as many games as they lost. Big wins were characteristic of the powerful girl's team. There were also some close calls and opportunities for big plays. The Thurs- day night games did not always draw the support that the boy's teams did. For the increasing numbers of fans who did come out for the games it proved an exciting event, watch- ing the girls win game after game. lst Time Around 2nd Time US THEM US- 4l Lindbergh -34 39- 32 US- 45 Lincoln -26 46. 29 us- 4I Osseo JO 4'. 44 US- 38 Park -2C 37- 24 US- SI Robbinsdale 28 54- 3I US- 39 Edina West -35 43- 26 US- 29 Jefferson -45 uS- 32 Burnsville -38 us- 45 Cooper -43! 64 FAR LEFT BOTTOM: FRONT ROW: P. Those teams which do not win quite as many games are not as easy to write about. cheerfully. Hockey is one such sport. Very simply, Armstrong hockey was in a slump this year, and won just three regular season games. In spite of statistics, the interest in Falcon hockey did not die. Team members stuck it out through the rough season, as did parents and fans. Even the night when there was no heat in the New Hope Ice Arena, the fans bundled up and came out to the game. Practices for marching band started in the summer and continued in the wee hours of the morning once school started. Pep bands provided enthusiasm and spirit at football and soccer games during the fall. bas- ketball and hockey games during the winter. The bands prac- ticed during school and on their own time in preparation for the concerts. Band also is nerveracking. Tryouts, practices, concerts and contests are a few of the main distractions. All band mem- bers know the awful feeling right before chair tryouts, or for symphonic band. They also know the equally unnerving feel- ing while practicing songs for the conert which is coming up in a few days. The solo and ensemble contests were an extra curricular measurement of instrumentalists ability. Band is fun too. There were lots of little things throughout the year that made band fun and worthwhile. Ask a band member. 75 FRONT ROW: A. Kieffer, J. Bugos. J. Leicher. C. Zaugg, C. Christoferson, K. Hagedorn. L. James French and Richard Bjorkman combined their talents and skills and produced Armstrong's most powerful marching band in history. Many long hours were put into chart- ing moves for the band. It takes approximately one hour of charting for every minute on the field. The band members also put in many 6:30 am. rehearsals. Adding to the color and vari- ety of the performances and rehearsals was the guide-on flag corps. The weather did not cooperate with the band. This resulted in wet practices and wet games. In spite of this the spirit hard- work, and enthusiasm of the I26 members kept the band going through even the wettest weather. A successful trip to Hamline University was an added attrac- tion. There they performed for the homecoming halftime show. The season ended with the third annual Marching Band Concert where the season's highlights were relived. French Cheerleaders ' Got The Spirit Cheering is looked upon in different ways, no expla- nation needed. but to the girls who participate it is something special, something that is important to them. Some people find it hard to understand why they enjoy cheering. One explanation may be that it is hard to understand, even for some of the girls them- selves, but that cheerleading offers them a combina- tion of friendship and fun while learning about lead- ership and cooperation. Whatever the motivation, it is there and evident. As they stand by the sidelines on those chilly fall even- ings gazing with anticipation at the field, some wish that they too could be playing the game, but know they can only make the sidelines, while others are content to be where they are. In any case, they give their Support, spirit, and en- thusiasm and focus it on to the field. Cheerleading is more than formal banquets, early morning practices, and evening sporting events. It is a personal fulfillment and a dedication to Armstrong High School. B Squad Cheerleaders: FRONT ROW: L. Johnson, L. Newberry, C. Cameron. T. Rivezzo. BACK ROW: 5. Goike, K. Vogelsberg. L. M This year 's Astronettes had a new look. They added seven more girls and scphomores to their line. At the beginning of their season, which started at the end of June, the girls had one thing in common - their dancing ability. Throughout the summer and school year, the Astronettes practiced, argued, and practiced some more. Getting un- anymous decisions between twenty girls wasn't always easy and the problem of money was constantly on their minds. However, by the end of the season the twenty girls had something more in common e they now have close friendships and memories to be treasured. FLAGS: M. Wanous. M. Miller. J. Olson. C. Olson. J. I am having fun with the other eight girls in the group. We have had many good times together. Like the time we all were coming back from getting our pictures taken and we got a flat tire. The recognition on highway 55 was unbeliev- able. It's not everyday the rush hour traffic gets to watch nine girls attempting to change a tire. Armstrong is an okay place mom and dad. It is many things to many people. It is cheering, dancing and making new friends. It is holding up a smile when things aren't going so good, and sticking together hopefully in line. Mostly it is learning to get along and a chance to make some unforgettable memories of our high school years at Armstrong. POMS: T. Strauss, M. Burrill. M. Roberg. J. Schwecke. A. LaLiberte. J. Basketball, hockey and wrestling each have A and B squads that cheer home and away games. Since each squad cheers only one sport, there is a more united feeling between the girls involved. Not having to split up for different sports is a definite advantage. The closeness that occurs because of this makes it all worthwhile. The excitment of each sport is something special to each girl involved. When the season is over there are feelings of sadness, but the good times and close friends that have been made will last forever. 1m Awwwmvnw W A-SQUAD HOCKEY: K. Stoeckman. N. Carlson, T. Those who do know of its existence frequently question its function. Yes, Armstrong does have a government consisting of stu- dents and faculty members representing each department. In addition, three students are elected at large. It even has a function. The Student Staff Senate is a communication vehicle, there to serve students or faculty who propose ideas that will benefit Armstrong or the community. Although the Senate is not a policy makingbody, it can be an influential group by making thoughtfully prepared recommendations to the admin- istration on matters affecting the student body. Frustration went hand in hand with a sense of accomplishment as agenda items either became tabled until the next meeting or passed with the Senate's approval. Early morning meetings started at seven, accomplished an indepth look into the ten cent charge in the alternative lunch line, the uncontrollable gambling in the commons, serving the . community by asking the students to be blood donors, and publicly recognizing honor students. To all Senate members it was a learning experience that forced the teacher-student relationship into something more than an acedemic necessity. Everyone involved in the Senate joined from a need to help Armstrong and each other. It is this spirit that made Senate 77-78 worthwhile. STUDENT STAFF SENA TE: FRONT ROW: J. Ritchie. G. Scarborough. The Armstrong Environmental Agency tAEAl set out to improve the quality of swamp life in Plymouth. Minnesota. Even during the cold of winter. Although all groups were not represented, due to a lack of interest. a cross section of sports. academics and cultural clubs showed up at various meetings throughOut the year. The purpose of S.A.B. was to organize many of the more prominent events during the school year. The weeks of Sno-daze. and Homecoming were aided by the S.A.B. members. Pep fests. were also planned early in the morning. Often the duties and plans of S.A.B. and the newly formed spirit club overlapped. Mr. Telford led both organizations. The proof of this is evident upon entering the Gyre room any night after school. Two or three individuals can be found there attempting to put together a yearbook which mir- rors the year for every student at Armstrong. It seems impossible that we survived, fairly happily. amidst a constant barrage of criticism. Surprisingly enough. after nine straight hours of layouts, a chuckle or two still could be heard from the mysterious room. Occasionally the criticism and lack of su pport caused a feeling of hopelessness. On these evenings the sounds of flying erasers and frustrated bickering filled the halls. Goals were simple this year. We didn't attempt to dazzle or shock anyone. Pleasing the majority of the people was the main goal. Sounds easy? Try it sometime. Everyone knows exactly what the perfect yearbook should be. but few people were willing to work for it. In these days when apathy is showing signs of dying out. the Gyre should not be the one grOup keeping it in existence. FRONT ROW: 5. Burns. S. Peterson. L. Schnack. S. Gaines. l. Jacobwith. K. Dunn. All of the money contributed by hungry Armstrong students went towards a spring trip to Canada. The early morning donut sales and countless boxes of candy were peddled by students planning a spring vacation in Montreal and those who just enjoyed helping out the French Club. All students taking French were members of the club, the degree of activity varied according to willingness to be tempted by candy, twenty-four hours a day. French Club was more than just pushing food. For members, it also meant trips to French cultural events and a French dinner tyes, more foodb The opportunity to learn more about language and culture through fun and experimental activities, was a main objective of French Club. The spring trip to French speaking Canada highlighted the year for many students. This trip began and ended on a bus. In between these times, a taste of France was had, fairly close to home. For those students journeying to Canada it was a time of excitement and learning. For those students staying in Minnesota, there was always candy to eat and delicasies to be found. BELOW: Early morning donut sales helped many students afford a trip to Canada. 97 National Honor Society Knowledge is the key to understanding, and scholar- ship is the road that will take you there. Beginning in the tenth grade students are entertained by the lively men and woman who head the infamous small. medium. and large groups. The horror of four straight mods of American History film group was lessened by such movie classics as; The Mouse That Roared and Duck and Cover . Eleventh grade large groups featured men wrapping their legs around themselves and a Weekday Morning at the Movies Special; Nicholas and Alexandar. In the final year of social. Pavlov's droolers and senior involvement were the main attractions. Through behavior modification and a little bit of silliness the teachers of social studies made life just a little more bearable. The Arts Although the halls of Armstrong are not filled with the paintings of Picasso or the sounds of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. or even Jean Paul Sartre. we did have our share of culture. Despite appearances many students observed cultural events and sometimes participated in them. The opportunity to participate in the cultural world was heightened by various classes at Armstrong. Art classes gave students the chance to develop their own artistic talents. The music programs also lent an ear to the musically inclined and those who attempted to become musically inclined. The business teachers and co-op advisors tried to lessen the burden. Preparations for a life in. or dealing with the world of business were provided by this group of instructors. Through the co-op programs, students got a chance to put their newly acquired skills to work. The ever present advisors occassionally checked up on progress and made certain that everything went smoothly. The clang and click of a variety of machines greeted visitors to floor three each day. As the semester pro- gressed. the elanging went faster and the clicking became more rhythmic. Even the scrawlings of the shorthand stu- dents became more illegible. The business resource center has always been, by far, the noisiest tas far as work noise goesi room in the school. If it wasn't the typewriters, it was the sound of a fifty pound accounting book opening on a table. The most famous aspect of bus. ed. must remain the little red blocks. Twen- ty years from now a study will be done on why secretaries around the world can not type without a little red block resting on their desk. Pat Hultgren. 199 Today is the first day of my life. When younger, lspent much time planning my grown-up life. Older people have expressed a desire to be young again, to correct past wrongs. lam now between those extremes, and am rigorously practicing the art of life. I want to die after living, rather than before. A look into the past is only worth what can be applied to the present. It can 't be changed or used in any benefi- cial way. Irefuse to become a gra ve-robber. A look into the future has even less to offer than the past. It 's harder to reach, and at best is a seldom enjoyable pastime. At worst it's an escape from one is self, a dangerous journey, unreasonably priced. When looking upon a flo wer, I don't say, Someone must have planted this flower and nurtured it with great care, merely, It is very beautiful. Yesterdays dead, tomorrow is blind, and I live one da y at a time. :son jenniferanderson jenniteranaerson Karenanaerson Karsconanaerson L1n 3n timothyanderson tracyanderson tracyanderson gregoryarendt betharetz jn albalma cullenbankole kevinbarrett patriciabarrett randybarrett juliebar abegin jamesbehling anthonybelden cathybender jeffreybenesh kurtbensen o alman Christopherbethke juliebillings susanbillings jenniferberry curtbi g montebloom williamblume jeffreybobgan deborahbofferding ronaldbohm suz raigbratsch thomasbeher cynthiabrengman michaelbrenna rodneybrewer lorib aristopherbrynteson teresabuen teresabugos davidbunday susanburkett kath :alder darrellcarlson dianecarlson leonardcarlson lindacarlson chriscarp per laurencecavanagh markchapman sandracharles lorichristiansen randychr sandracollins terricomp shawnconlan clemancooper scottcotie judithcotten deancrampton lizcrandall lauracrawford marjoriecromie michaelculhane ti L rogerdahl kristandavis scottdavis loridechaine thomasdellich kennethde sey johndiederichs patriciadiedrich peggydionysius sallydoering thomasdo 1echols aaroneckroad kennetheckstrom petereichorst cindieekstedt michael inengstrom charlesenselein jeffreyerager dawnerickson stephenerickson ga 3ps cynthiafaacks sandrafaacks haroldfagley carolynfahning jonfaust mary 1andez toyafew kevinferrell brianfinn michellefischer paulfisher susanfi :t williamflett stuartflolid josephfoggia dannyforster roxannefowler dav lgaines thomasgallion christophergandrud robertgarfield tammiegates rand merylgilman kristagjenvick marciaglidden jeffreygoldsmith markgonrowski tamelagraber patriciagraen brucegrage stephengrande davidgriffin keving ssman frankgruber pamelagrussing irisgunnerson michaelgurewitz stephanie ayhagen thomashagford jeffreyhahn denisehalbmaier markhall kathyhallen j 3n josephhanson markhanson pamelahanson keithhanstad donaldharding lisah 3rahhawkins michaelheffelfinger heatherheffern susanheidmann josephheinz uarkhill debrahillsland janhimmelman stevenhoel colleenhogan andrewholle cindyhovind danielhowell randallhoy annhuber patriciahultgren paulhunsb uasjaeger maryjankowski karljanzen josephjellison ardellejensen coreyjen hnson donaldjohnson jenniferjohnson kendalljohnson kimberlyjohnson kurt 3n sheryljohnson theresajohnson tracyjohnson robinjohnston ericjoselyn m avinkelly teresakelly karenkettner annkieffer lorikilker alvinking lisak 1tson frankkoelfgen scottkolar katherinekolian richardkomarek zanekoos k 3 robinkreft scottkreft larrykristoff mariankrussow markkuno suzettelafr Lamon jeffreylappen scottlarson vickilarson vickilarson patricialeaf tho aylewicki debralies kerrylindgren coleenlindstrom jenniferlinman teresal rlund karenlussky daniellyon gregorylyon lukelyons jeffreymaciej mariama Lrtin robertmartini jeanmaeffy debramatis sandramay williammccollum dann nichaelmcgowen sandramckenzie thomasmclennan coleenmcmahon jeffreymcmurr 1ichels nancymickley lisamilacnik terrymilbrath ronaldmills davidminge d deannamortenson timothymuller kurtmundahl michaelmurnane michaelmurphy 3r williamneary cathynelson collettenelson debranelson dennisnelson judy 1 scottnygaard suzannenylin pamelanylin gregoryoleary maryoleary maryann wadeolsen bathanneolsen carolynolson cherylolson edwardolson jenniferol :arenostby markostmoe wendyosvold michaelpachnik rondipalbicki colleenpa rena deniseperkins Christopherpeterson davidpeterson jamespeterson markp lillipS charlesphilpott jeffreypiiola sharonpikula steffaniepinsky linda ,urland susanputnam bradleyquade jillquick marilynraedeke robertraedeke :homasreid lorireimer laurareinhart robertrewitzer patriciarhoades danie naerson marKanaerson michaeLanderson michaeianderson Devianderson scotta reyarola scottasher kennethaudette jamiebaer brentbainey timothy balder' regoryartz rhondabauers gregorybauman nancybeaverlander kimberlybecker b erineberquist kevinberndt elisabernick marabesner doreenbesonen joseph ellenbirch thomasbishop robertbitner tammibjofkman loriblock scott eborgie elizabethbork suzanneborreson timothybrakefield valeriebr kel bethbrOman heidibrossard lawrencebrown richardbrown scottbr nbriggs susanburns williamburrows josephbydlon michellecady j u e ier cathleencaryl cynthiacaryl jeffreycheney juliecasper 1y n iansen cherylchristopherson brianclark conniecobb jeffrey col therinecoughlin kevincourtney richardcovin betsycoy sh eryl hyculhane michaelcullado kimberlycurran johncuthbert thomas sky clarelyndempsey roddenzine sarahdewey stevendew ey rebe r todddonnelly karindreyer josephdubel ericebersb erger pa nes barbaraendresen kevinenge charlesengstrand mikeengstro st kimevangelist maryevenson margaretewen cli ffordedgett t rosannefearing robertfedje colleenfennell bradleyfern Cher : michaelflaaten patrickfleischaker pa ulflemming jo 3x thomasfoy barbarafreese kimfrie s jamesfristoe gaulrapp stevengaustad gregor ygee michaelgeo g7 agorlinsky karyg x if???
