AWINDOW. A window . . . which we all pass. Walking in for the first time as green sophomores, eager and excited about High School, we miss the significance of our Iarger-than-Iife window 0n the world. As seniors, on our way out, we just begin to look out of the window, hoping we' re ready to cope with, ' that we see. Between these two events, a vast number of experiences, different for each person, shapes each in a unique way. a school, a common focal point through ' , morrows away to worry about. , I . AS CHOL. i. . ; For some the three years leave a butter taste and a com- '- puIsion to run away from anything that s'ounds Iikegjj ' school. Others gobee it up and clamOr for more. Still I I I others, probably most of us', wiII Iodk back on HigthFN' Schodl as a separate entity, as the good oId days when things were simple and outside reality was too many to A COMMON FOCAL POINT I See How Much I've Grown. Talk about Kaleidiscopes of experiences, about micro- cosms of society, gush over the possibilities of discovering full selves. They all can happen, it's all there. Even cliches and catch phrases can be true if that's what you want. What's here for each person doesn't fit into neat, univer- sal packages. You make your own sandwich, wrapped the way you want because ultimately you're going to eat it. A COMMON PLACE THAT LETS US DISCOVER JUST HOW INDIVIDUAL WE ARE a k v ngrww With four out of five performance nights sellouts The Sound of Music was classified by teachers, administrators and students as Armstrong's best musical. But it took a lot to make it successful. Many behind the scenes differences between the cast and crews arose such as costume deadlines, properties and scene change problems. But solutions to the problems were found, and the play settled down to a happy medium. The play centers around a young impetuous postulant named Maria, played by Karen Tunks, who is constantly turning the Abbey and its occu- pants upside-down. She is sent away from the Abbey by the kindly Moth- er Abbess, portrayed by Carolyn Benepe, to work as a governess in a rich baron's household. She is put in charge of seven lively children. The head of the household is the children's widowed father, the Baron Von Trapp, played by Tom Stadnik. Because of the hurt brought on by his wife's death he has inflicted his former military routine on his children to keep old memories away. As the inevitable romance enters, so does the Third Reich to spoil the placid dream. But, as always, love conquers and the play ends as the family escapes through the mountains to Switzerland and freedom. And as the final swells of the nun chorus fill the auditorium, night after night the audience rose to its feet to prove that all the work was worthwhile. Top: Regal Guests for a Regal Party. The Varsity? Well, we did better this year than past Armstrong teams; winning first place at the Chaska Tourney started the year out well. All four of us had the same feeling - we could and would wun. The Novice team was the largest ever in the history of Armstrong - 15 people actively participated. It's spirit was unmatched by any other team in the state. Our record? It still seems unreal. The Varsity with a 60Wo win record and the Novice with over SOVo wins. BELOW - Varsity Debate re- searches for next meet . . . 32 Key club'stronger than ever . . . 1974-75 was a strong year for the Key Club. The club started early, meeting periodically throughout the summer. In August it was decided that girls should be allowed to join and participate in club activities. The general feeling was that girls would give a life and increase popularity of the club. Key Club is intended to be a service organization of high school boys who are aware of the world in which we live and bold enough to say that they give a damn . Under the leadership of seniors Duane Swenson and Steve Moravec, the club strove for high goals. In a time when clubs are losing popularity, Key Club grew stronger than ever. Pres. Swenson put it this way - One of the best ways of getting satisfaction is working with people and fellow Key Clubbers in dealing with the problems we face in the world today. TOP - Pres. Where some dropped out others seemed to take on new responsibilities. While staff members were not in the Gyre Office vandals made themselves at home. Working to get a picture and then having it stolen was an ever frustrating problem. With all the obstacles to pass a few determined souls did manage to complete the '75 Gyre. The ODYSSEY staff clustered together under a common goal - to print the news like it was, without being told to print the news only like people would have liked to think it was. They found themselves different in tastes and talents, yet the llOd bods found themselves making friends and fun. Staff members shared deadline doses of cold hamburgers and fries, hysteria and, every now and then, copy. But they also shared a part of themselves as friends. Cheerleading: thefaquuad... Cheerleading took on a new dimension in '74- '75. The year began normally, with fifteen cheerleaders cheering all fall sports. As the winter season approached, the administration informed them that they would have to split up and form separate squads for the different win- ter sports. With much disorganization, the squads were decided upon . . . The purpose of separate squads was to unify the cheerleaders and the team - how it worked out is hard to say. There was some good and some bad. The girls had a good time cheering and doing things together, they got along well and no one felt pressured to cheer. The question is: What is going to happen to cheerleading in the future - will everyone you see around Armstrong be wearing a uniform? We've got the spirit, how 'bout you? OPPOSITE PAGE: B-Squad: L. In between the tension of tryouts and the excitement of the last swish of a porn, lies the joys and trials of a Pom Pom Girl. This year nine girls stepped out of the aver- age student mold to add their part in making Armstrong something special. Throughout the school year, the Pom Pom Squad cheered and danced at various athletic events. Their purpose To encourage school spirit and liven up half-time. Dance styles ranging from jazz to jive were the products of many hard hours of work and practice. Of course the entire year was not completely work. Pot luck suppers be- fore games, overnights, Christmas caroling, working in a haunted house and breakfasts before school provided the Pom Porn Girls with a fun filled year. Within a year's time, friendships developed and flourished, not only within the group, but outside of it as well. The support the Pom Porn Girls, Cheerleaders, Flag Twirlers, Astronettes and Birds gave to one another, doubled the enthusiasm and spirit they shared with both Falcon fans and the teams. There were many fun times, yet each girl had the responsibility to get things done that needed doing. When working with so many, the girls soon realized that one has to give more than receive. Applying these ideas to a group situation created a one-ness that will never be forgotten. 47 - Last minute practices and pre-halftime jitters made for unforgetable experiences . . . Squad: P. Clubbers stay after school and come evenings working to help the spirit of Arm- strong grow. The only drawback is that most of their work is done behind the scenes. One of Pep Club's major projects was working on the Homecoming activities. They arranged coronation and took care of the floWers for the Homecoming court and semi-finalists. Pep Club showed their spirit by having a pom- pom and cheering section at football games. During the winter season, they handled the concessions. Of course, not everything the club did worked out, but they had fun doing it anyway. 'rrows B. Bohien, C Oison, I. Oppegard. 2nd Row Sec T. Cav,anaugh Pres M. Grothe, 9. Pfanning,Tres J. Loh- man, L. With eleven returning Iettermen, it looked like Arm- strong would have a winning soccer team, one that could be good enough to go to the state tournament. As the season opened, it seemed as if high hopes and impossible dreams were a reality as the Falcon team tied number one rated Lindbergh, then blasted the Robins 4 to 1. The seventh game was by far the most exciting for players and fans. With only two seconds left in the game, Kennedy scored to send it in to overtime. The dejected Armstrong crew started the overtime peri- od in anguish after having victory in their grasp. Many other teams would have let down and folded under the pressure of this strong comeback, but not this soccer team, as Mark Wernlund passed across field to Jeff O'Neill, then O'Neill returned the ball to Jeff Hewitt, Hewitt finished the picturebook play by beating the goalie in the lower left hand corner. A mob of bodies then insued burying the happy goal scorers alive. The season then went progressively downhill begin- ninngith a 3-0 loss to Cooper before the largest crowd in District 281 history. Team moral was falter- ing as the Falcons lost three 2-1 decisions. Thanks to better communication between players and coach- es, the Falcons were able to salvage a tie against Richfield, and an opening playoff victory against Minnetonka. The season ended in a mudbowl as the Falcons struggled valiantly against the rain and fu- ture state champion Lincoln, but to no avail as they lost 4-0. .5. WWW lllll l Xll ll 'x r IM NW ! With 67 par- ticipants, both male and female, the team was the largest in Minnesota. To start off the season the team traveled to the Princeton Invitational, taking top spot easily. A month later competition stiffened, as the har- riers competed in the Rum River Invite; in winning, they also recieved a number one state rating. As the last Lake Conference round end- ed, Armstrong won the Conference title with a 13-0 record. The team had five runners named to the All- Conference team: Co- captains Steve Guertin and Tom Braun, Chris Napolitano, Lane Wiek- er, and Tom Whiteis. These five plus Steve Var- ner and Steve Renneberg formed the Arm- strong tournament team. These seven domi- nated the District meet, capturing four of the top five places and winning by over 102 points ' over the second place team - an all-time rec- ord. Sophomore and J.V. ran very well in their Con- ference races. The Sophomores took a second place, with Steve Johnson winning the individ- ual honors with first place. J.V. captured the top spot, as Steve Novak took the individual honors with first place. The girls won second in their Conference meet, with Sherry Edwards taking All-Conference honors. The tournament team ran on to conquer Re- gions, then trotted through heavy opposition to take State. Although Guertin was the only one who placed in the topten, it was the show- ing the rest of the team made that put the Fal- cons on top. The team gives out awards to the year's out- . standing individuals. Most valuable was won by Steve Guertin, the most dedicated: Lane Wiek- er, most improved since last year: Dean Linnell, most improved this year: Doug Griffin. The biggest goofooff award went to Whiteis and the scoring title was captured by Chris Napolitano and Tom Whiteis. A team record was set with 16 boys under the 17 minute mark. And God said let there be Minnetonka, Cooper, Edina West, Lincoln, St. Louis Park, Robbinsdale, Mariner, Lindbergh, and the Lake Conference, and it was good. And God saw that it was good, and God divided victory from' defeat, calling victory good, and didn't bother to talk about defeat. In the weeks to come, Armstrong was near perfection as they rambled over Tonka and Coop- er . . . then a black Cougar crossed their path, as Edina West did them in for their first defeat. The Falcon gridders pulled together and won two more contests against Park and Lincoln. The team fell into many temptations and God called them Cheerleaders. Seeing this, God sent a great rain to befall game night against Robbins- dale. A prophet named Moxness created an arc in which the Robins swamped the Falcons 20-0. Coach Loechler redeemed his gridders and part- ed the waters of Mariner as the Falcons returned to victory from the valley of darkness. Then, ren- ouncing the Devil and all his works, the Falcon gridders repossessed the Lindbergh Flyers in a. Hell of a battle. As God planned it, Armstrong and Jefferson would be the last to meet. llAn eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth, said one gridder. But it was His will that the Falcons should lose an eye . . . a tooth . . . a leg . . . and an arm as Armstrong lost 35-7. Front: C. Saucier, R. Phillips, E. Meline, J. Calder, G. Mundahl, Co-Capt. Alot of former members did not return. We had to train and condition in three weeks to be ready for our first match. As the season wore on, the girls became a team and skills im- proved. At times we were at a loss because of injury and lack of cooperation between members. We made it to the first night of State playoffs, but we were defeated, because of a who cares attitude and no support. No one but the team and coach real- ize how hard we worked and it didn't get us anywhere, be- cause here at Armstrong, Volleyball isn't a sport, but an out- cast. It really doesn't rate and we haven't any support, other than a few parents. In the future, I hope to see Volleyball become a more popular sport. It would really help the spirit of the team. The Falcons finished with a 9-5 record in Lake Conference competition. They lost to only the very top teams, making a good show of it all the same. The Wrestling season was best described by the old saying: It's not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game. There were a lot of close matches, even though their Division was tough and they all seemed to get the flu at the same time. The two teams they did beat, they blew offthe mat. Individuals did well . . . Co-captain Nick Miller was All-Conference, won the Grand Rapids Invitational and took fifth in the District Tournament. Chim Wilkens took a sixth in Districts, and co-captain Paul Loaney took top spot in the Grand Rapids and Columbia Heights Invitationals, placed fifth in Districts, second in Regions and continued on to the State Tou rnament. The senior dominated exhitibed depth and experience - more so than the teams of previous years. They had potential, maybe enough to get them to the top; but it never happened... Members of the squad suffered a deep emotional experience when on a scrimmage trip, the team was involved in a fatal accident. The players were obviously set back as a result, but it was this experience that helped to mold the individuals into a team. The '75 season was a mixture of victories big and medium, dashed in with a bit of defeat. Some of the highlights were: upsetting number one ratedJefferson early in the season, winning the Norsemen Tournament over vacation, and defeating arch-rival Cooper in the second of two clashes. It is sometimes hard to understand how a team with plenty of talent fails to win. Some might blame it on the coach, saying that he could not put it together. The reason the Falcon Hockey team did not win was lack of motivation. The squad has plenty of fan support, pep talks from the coach, and the backing of seven loyal cheerleaders. The only think wrong was that individuals on the team failed to motivate themselves. To just win was not good enough. A team that is unwilling to give its all will never win, especially in the Lake Conference. What is beautiful about the Falcon team is that by the end of the season, this lesson was realized. Team members quit giving excuses for poor play and also stopped the back biting that plagued them earlier. Things began to gel, and everyone felt like a member of the team, instead of individuals in a team sport. The Falcons didn't go on to win the State Hockey Tournament, but each member knew inside of himself how good the Armstrong team really was. They proved their worth by beating a good Orono team 9-2 in the first round of Region playoffs, then struggled valiently against fifth rated Edina West in a game that will go down in time as one of the best ever in Armstrong's history. Although the outcome was a heartbreaker, the loss is not what will stick out in the minds of all. Instead, they will remember how an ununified group of individuals pulled together in the end. 76 We couldn't compete as individuals in a team sport Varsity Hockey Team . . . Front: J. Morris, 5. It being my last year on the Ski team, I felt I should write something special .. . but what? I could write a fantastic article telling how we got run over by a cattle truck coming home from practice one night ... ltalked to co-captain Dave Lawson about it, and he suggested I write about only the good, fun, fantastic, exciting, stupendous, and unbelieveable things that happened to the team, without mentioning our record and how we got ripped off in Regionals. I suppose that leaves me alot 0t work with - there's still dry-land and winter practices, weekend races and tournaments, busrides, after-victory celebrations, and of course race day breakfasts. I really shouldn't mention how we were 10-1, second in the Conference and Region, how we beat a strong Lincoln team in Slolam and Jumping. Oh, and how co-captain Chris Saucier finished fourth in State. .. . But then again, we did have some pretty good scrambled egg and pancake breakfasts . . . - Pete Hoover Although few in number, the Ski-jumpers flew off with first place in Regions and seventh place in State, behind tough competitors. Their great outcome was due to morning practices before the snow arrived twhich meant getting to school before six o'clocki and practice every day after school. The team was composed of five guys and one giri, who most of the time was the only girl competing in the Lake Conference meets. Hopes for a successful season without injuries were shattered when Jim Mel by sustained his annual hospital record by breaking his arm during the final city jumping meet ofthe season. We didn't win many meets, but that didn't really matter, especially since we shared our bus with the girl's team. And the managers . . . We didn't really want to go to the State Meet; another two weeks of hard training followed by another agonizing race. The worst part would have been the news after the race, telling us that we didn't even qualify for the pit squad . . . We did set one record, though. We had more broken skis this year than any previous year in the history of Armstrong. The skiers who contributed to this fine record can be truly proud. This record is sure to stand for a long time. Training was enjoyable . . . sometimes. You would be skiing along at the Flower Gardens, when suddenly a piercing scream would echo through the woods. You smile, knowing someone just wiped out on killer hill. tProbably just another sophomore - at least we had plenty to spareli Team spirit? It was great. With four returning members from last year's championship team, Beyer and team had their work cut out. The Falcons were to be given no mercy as they were pitted against the number one rated Park team for their first dual meet of the season. Performances were shaky by both teams, but the Falcons recaptured the number one rating by a too- close-for-comfort margin. Mid season meet scores were inconsistant, while the Park team peaked. Regionals loomed closer and closer - the meet that would decide which of the top two teams would actually participate in the State Meet. The Falcon gymnasts hit their long awaited peak the night of Regions, smashing Minnesota State High School Gymnastics records 154.82 over Park's 153.07 . . . The biggest meet in state history. Beyer's boys continued on to take the fourth consecutive state title in five years of competition. A-Squad - Seated: T. Kjorsvig, Co-Capt. M. Livieri, J. Blin- dauer, Co-Capt. D. Kuhn. Standing: J. W a Z? q 3 U5 0-!- H O 3 00 The girl's Gym team, built around a strong framework of seniors, was not plagued by the pains of adjusting to new coaches Jan Olson and Bonnie Nelson. On the contrary - they were more together than ever before. The girls practiced six days a week; every day after school, some nights and Saturdays. Team members helped each other; from constructing routines, to praising the finished product with a hearty Ata baby! Their work obviously paid off as co-captains Betsy Headley and Cindy Rohloff led the team to a 6-4-1 season. Competition was stiff, as many of the top teams in the State were in our district. 85 Being Snow-Dazed Was A Good Excuse For A Little Merry-Making During The Winter-Doldrums. BOTTOM: Crowning the royalty was tough. Winter, said some students and some staff, gets long and gruesome at Armstrong. What can we do about that? Well, said some other students and some other staff, why don't we capitalize on the winter-blahs and make a festival of it? Just like we do every other year, we can start out with a spirit-picker- upper, or in other words, a pep fest. For our traditional winter dance, we can have the guys be asked out by the girls. Then, let's not forget the people who have done important things for the furtherment of the school. We can make them Kings and Queens over this winter festival like we have at all other winter festivals. Yes, said the students and staff, a festival is in order. But what can we call it that would sound original? How about SNO-DAZE? asked a student. Sounds good to me, said the students and staff in unEon. 89 The Falcon Cannot Hear the Falconer Another window smashed, another book mutilated, another obscenity slashed in vulgar paint across a wall. Trees broken, sod torn by churning wheels, a mural destroyed. This sort of thing might be ex- pected in a brutal penitentiary, or in a city invaded by Huns. But Armstrong High School is an enlight- ened community of decent people who are trying to live together peaceably. Our purposes are good, and our discipline is mild. Why do a few people want to destroy what could be rewarding for the many? What is their purpose? How could they have been wronged? There is no answer to these questions, and that is why the vandal's crime fills us with a peculiar blend of fury and dread. Most of us live with expectations most of the time. We are expected to study, expected to work, ex- pected to treat our fellow man with deference. These expectations come to us from family, church, school and community, and our performance is measured, punished, rewarded. But there are people for whom few expectations have ever existed, whose lives have known no order. These people are often motivated by sheer boredom, or by a random inclination which is unchecked by conscience or consideration. Let the firstling of my heart be the firstling of my hand, said an ancient villain. And if one's heart is dark, one's hand is bloody. This is the world of wanton destruction and casual brutality that we who live by order and concern can never understand. Indeed there is nothing there to be understood; it is a blind monster. The myths of ancient Greece taught that the earth is a flat disc, and that anyone who ventured to its edge would fall into Chaos, a bottomless maelstrom of disordered elements out of which the world had been made. The difference between Chaos and the world was a dramatic symbol of the Greek belief that order is absolutely essential as a starting place for everyth- ing else. We cultural descendents of those Greeks still know in our hearts that order is the key to sur- vival, a starting point from which to build a useful and rewarding life. That is why we regard the vandals in our midst with dismay, revulsion, and a touch of panic. If the vandal acted out of hatred or some misguided ideal, we could be comforted by the de- sign or the motivation. But behind the vandal's eyes boils the soul of Chaos, never to be placated, never to be explained. He is our oldest enemy. - Mr. John Norton Variety Of Expression Girls Do Their Own Thing . ..
