Neil A. Armstrong- Where were you when we really needed you? 1971-72 at Armstrong was when the novelty wore off. The? were no split shifts, no lack of facilities, no excuses if we made mistakes. We settled into a routine. The atmosphere was more down to business. But the attitude of the students wasn't. The kids were as sophisticated as the Armstrong concept, refusing to be molded into tradition or fall for any dishonesty. Jocks and freaks were equally popular- if popularity was that important. There were very few ujoiners . Most got involved because they wa nted to. not because it was the thing to do or looked good on the records. 80 organizations were hurting and nobody went to the games and we were labeled llapathetic. The feeling in the halls was tense, anticipatory. Later it became lax and kids did what they wa nted-until the clampdown, which didn't help much. Teachers were disgusted with the system and its results. They had assumed that with all the new facilities and variety of courses, students would settle down to work. Perhaps they assumed too much. When the novelty wore off, we realized the policies set up the year before pertained to us. Some of us couldn't adapt, so the greater part of the year was spent redefini ng the Armstrong concept. There was a lot of questioning, by both faculty and students, of administrative policies, spirit things and freedom-responsibility issues, because nobody was really satisfied with what Armstrong had to offer. Some will interpret this as a lot of failure. Others will call it our success story. We view it as a willingness to change.
