The month of December, 1900 was saddened by the untimely death of Superintendent Krogman, who introduced the athletic program and was known as the father of ath- 1etics . Succeeding Mr. Krogman the board appointed as Superintendent, Mr. Orr Schurtz, who at the beginning of 1902 added the elective course which increased the selection of courses by pupils from two to seven. A very well attended night school was started. It needed but one election in January 1907 to decide the city should be bonded for the cost of a new high school. Immediate action was taken and by January 1909 the building was completed. 5 Succeeding Mr. Schurtz as the head of the public school system was Edmund Den- nison who remained here from 1918 until 1922 when H. S. Doolittle, Calumet High School faculty member, was named superintendent. To Mr. Doolittle goes the honor of having served the longest term as superintendent in Negaunee's educational history, for he occupied the position from 1922 until he de- cided to retire in .Time of 1948, a period of twenty-six years. During his tenure, changes were many, as it was the transition period in education and both schools and curric- ulum were modernizing. i--.
