SENIOR CLASS HISTORY It was a big day, that September 7, when our class of '54 made its presence known in the halls of Neenah High, and most of us were quaking with respect and apprehension. What little courage we mustered was badly shaken when, at the Cub Mixer, our hair was braided and tied with green ribbon, the symbol of our inexperience, and a few of the boys were forced to push pennies across that great gym floor with their noses! Shortly after the opening of school, we met the man who was to act as our class advisor throughout our four years in high school, Mr. Zenisek. What he said that day made a deep im- pression on us and we did not soon forget the meaning and sincerity of his words. Zenisek, Frakes' Bartel. Wilton, Brazeau As a class, our first duty was to elect the officers who would represent us in the school activities. Best suited for the jobs were Dick Zenisek, whom we elected as our president, Barry Franzen - vice-president, Joan Heigl - secretary, and Joyce Zachow - treasurer. At the end of the football season the boys elected the girl who would represent our class at the Homecoming game - Rose Rasmussen. While the boys trained for football, the girls were being shown the ropes of school by their big sisters and then entertained at the Big and Little Sister Party given by the Girls' Senate. They also held a tea for their mothers. That year Howie Johnson's team took first place in the freshman intramurals and shortly thereafter we began work on our first sponsored dance, Spring Fever. 'k tk 'k 'lr We began our sophomore year effortlessly and as a result of a vigorous election, Harry Miller was elected president, Bob Gresenz -vice-president, Joanne Gorr- secretary, and Ann Pearson - treasurer. The first credit chalked to the name of sophomore as the result of our class output was a first place sign on our float in the Pep Parade that year. This was the origination of our Rocket man and blue iay which were to become our symbols of wins on floats to follow. Bonnie Porath was elected attendant to the Homecoming queen. We had caught onto the knack of ioining clubs by this time, and we participated in all phases of activities. We also led the classes on both honor rolls a number of times that year. Needless to say, a great many of us fol- lowed our varsity team to the state basketball tourney at Madison to cheer them on. Cuban Cruise , the theme for our dance in January, was depicted through murals and gangplank entrance. As the year drew to a close, the Mother-Daughter tea was planned and resulted in a big success. 'k 'k 'k 'k In 1952 for president we chose Roy Krueger, vice-president-Carl Jankowski, secretary-Cele Nault, and treasurer - Iva Hillegas. We jumped right into the midst of things - all things. At the Pep Parade we took our second first with our float We'll Be-heading for Victory . Sue Krueger was chosen to be our Homecoming representative. Staunch in our honors as well as extra-curricular activities, Cele Nault was chosen to attend Badger Girls' State and Dick Zenisek, John Owen, Harry Miller went to Badger Boys' State and Liz Wilton won an essay contest. Having worked on our prom decorations for weeks ahead of time, we were pretty well set when May 2 came. 'k 'k 'k 'lr Well aware that this was to be our last year in high school, we set out to really make something of it. Our first big proiect of the year was the election of officers, who were Dick Bartel - president, Doug Frakes - vice-presi- dent, Paula Brazeau-secretary and Liz Wilton-treasurer. For the Homecoming festivities, Ann Pearson was elected to reign as Queen. In the Pep Parade, our float followed the pattern or the past two years and received a first place with the slogan We'lI Reign Over Menasha. Fund-raising activities were of great importance. We first pestered students to buy Rocket pennants and pen- cils and then Neenah High School bracelets. Rather than a single dance with decorations, we sponsored a series of three dances. The Mother-Daughter tea was a dinner this year and some of us took faculty members as our guests. We drew up the plans for the Dick Neubauer Memorial which will be placed in the new gym in honor and memory of Dick's love for basketball. This spring, the Honor Society was chosen and awards were bestowed upon those deserving. The prom was our last at Neenah High and Dick Bartel and Paula Brazeau were crowned king and queen. The receiving of our diplomas closed our four years at N.H.S. and signified finis for the class of '54 on June 10. 14
