Schubart, President- The members of the Board of liducation are elected by the city voters for a period of three years. They have the responsibility of directing Neenah's public schools and appropriating money for the schools. The Board of Education is organized under a Wisconsin statute which specifies that each city must have a board X Page 8 SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS C. F. Hedges to direct and control the schools of the city. Foremost in their minds is the maintenance of an adequate system of good quality at the least cost to taxpayers. This year the board has been studying the problem of new school buildings. Because of the recent increase of population in Neenah, the present high school building has become over- crowded and inadequate. The board is also considering plans for the vocational and grade schools. All students of Neenah High should be grateful to the Board for their line efforts in our behalf. Mr. Hedges, superintendent of the Neenah public schools, acts as chief executive officer of the board of education. As head of the board, he takes the lead in administering to the affairs of the schools. He prepares the proposed budget, presents it to the board and sees that it is carried out after it is approved. He directs and supervises the Work of all employees and nominates candidates for positions in the school, to be voted on by the board. The instruction, classification, and promotion of pupils is done under his general direction. Besides his duties as superintendent, Mr. Hedges is on the Library Board and the Board of Vocational and Adult Educa- tion. He is also a special deputy of the State Industrial Commis- sion and is chairman of the junior Red Cross in Neenah. For many years he has been the guiding light for Neenah's school system Which can attribute its success to the untiring efforts and the capable leadership of our superintendent, Mr. Hedges. Not only in Neenah but also throughout Wisconsin and the Middlewest, Mr. Hedges is recognized as an outstanding educational leader.
