THE BASKETBALL SEASON ln the latter part of November the twenty second to be exact Coach Ole orgenson wlth a rather doubtful perplexed yet determined look was vlew mg some twenty five basketball candldates who were eagerly practlclng for the basketball season was soon to begm and only two lettermen Captaln Tyrlver and ohn Schneller were there to form a nucleus about whlch team could be bullt From these men a team was burlt which could hght wm games and lose them as well but only by small mar ms After several weeks of strenuous practice and a number of scnmmages wlth the second and alumni teams the 1927 basketball season was oth cxally opened on anuary 7 ln a home game against Two RIVCTS The locals lost by only one polnt I4 to I5 and as the score ll'ldlC8tCS lt was a real hard battle Neenah traveled to Rlpon anuary I2 and lost another close game I7 to 21 but the experlence Gained m these two Games displayed lt self m the two vlctorles followmg The Appleton hugh cagers untxl then undefeated were easrly prcked to wm thelr first game wlth Neenah but the Reds were an entirely drfferent team when they faced the Orangemen on the S A Cook Armory floor on Saturday anuary I5 lt was one of the marvels of the season that the locals after two reverses staged a comeback and emerged uctorlous from the best game of the season I3 to II Stlll playmg the brand of ball dns played ln the Appleton game the Neenah team took the slster school into camp and won I4 to 8 On anuary 28 Neenah lost an out of town Game to Shawano 20 to I2 and the meek followmg bowed to Fond du Lac Valley champions 8 to l l on the home court ln the remalnlnv games of the season Ne nah won from West Depere I7 to I0 lost to Menasha I6 to 20 and dropped the final en counter to Appleton 23 to I7 ln the tournament Neenah showed up well After wmnm from Berlun I4 to Z3 and Brandon I8 to II the locals lost tlse champion hrp game to Waupun I3 to 9 Thls gave our chool second place whlch speaks well of our team Two Neenah players Plnky ohn on and ohn Schneller were placed on the all sectlonal team Be :des the players that won the N s and N A A 1n basketball the sec ond team was presented wlth numerals The e ond team coached by Lyle Fehrman gave the varsrty team good practlces and they also deserve recog nltlon The followmg were awarded numeral Captam Paul Grogan Thomas Russell Robert Marty Herbert Thurmansen Paul Gerhardt Herbert Ehlers Gordon Brown Adelbert Jensen Howard Stacker and Leonard Neubauer Now when we look back up that season of hard work defeats dlscoura e nfents vlctorles clowned wlth joy whlch were borne by the coach as well as the squad we must conclude that through the efforts of the coach and the work of the quad Neenah hxvh chool had a succe sful basketball on m l977 mea ured not only ln arres won but m exnerrence and beneh s dcrxvcd for the players llc l - I ' J , , - ' s Q J r H . - . TRACK 19' 7 This is the first time since I922 that Neenah hi h chool had a track team and the Reds went through a successful season On Wednesday April 6 Gordon Brown was elected captain of the team and from then on track began in earnest After two weeks of hard practice an inter class meet was held at the green The competition was close but the Juniors won with I I0 I pomts The other classes secured pomts as fol The first mter scholastic meet was held with Wrightstown here on May 7 The visitors emerged victorious in a closely contested meet 60 2 3 to 56 I 3 At the conference meet held at De Pere on Saturday May I4 Neenah won fifth place Oconto Falls with an experienced team won the met Adelbert Blank placed first ln the 220 yard dash Bill Stacker second in the 440 yard dash Paul Gerhardt second in 880 yard run Captain Brown won third in the 720 yard low hurdles and lrwin Gunther won third in the 880 yard run. Captain Brown Adelbert Blank lrwin Gunther Paul Gerhardt William Stacker ohn Schneller Carl Gaertner Ernest Schmidt Francis Hauser and Manager Neary won letters in this sport. The following won N. A. A. s: lhde Klinker Harry and Charles Neubauer Howard Stacker and Haase.
