Wffi . GOOD TIMES NEELYVILLE R-4 SCHOOL DISTRICT NEELYVILLE, MISSOURI Being the yearbook editor took more work and dedication than I expected. Not only myself but the rest of the journalism class and Mrs. Tyler dedicated a lot of our time and worked very hard; from picking out the yearbook cover, to laying out the pages and writing copy. We tried our best to capture the memo- ries and all of the Good Times . I feel that this is a great yearbook and will be a hard one to top. I would like to thank all of the advertisers for supporting us financially; Mr. Rich, Rodney Dunlap, and Teresa Friday for copy; Tony Watkins for art work; Ruchelle Johnson for photog- raphy, and all of the teachers who helped us in many ways. Sincerely, Genna Crossen Editor I EDITOR'S PAGE! 3 The year is ever over, But the memories, they remain — Memories of the classes, Preparation for life's terrain. Memories of club meetings, Those both good and bad. Memories of the good times We so very often had. 4 Memories of the good friends, Who helped us on our way. Those who made the good times And brightened every day. Memories of homecoming, And the queen's most joyous tear; Memories of the ball games, And the fan's most boastful cheer. Yes, the classes, clubs, and ballgames, The friends and happy tear, These are all the good times. Memories — of one terrific year. Our President, Ronald Reagan, met in Iceland with Mikhail Gorbachev to talk of peace for the Star Wars program. This was followed by U S. bombing Libya; and Lt. Col. Oliver North began congressional testimony on secret funds for Nicaragua's Contras. Chernobyl Power Station in Russia exploded causing radiation to be spread world wide. The U.S. for the first time in years had a stunning 2.9% A P R on the new cars being sold. Aids spread world wide striking people of all ages and sexes. Scientists are working on a cure. Drugs were the in thing but were soon put down when it claimed the lives of 2 sports stars among 1 47 others. Rock Stars even became involved forming RAD , Rock Against Drugs. It was a big hit. Teen-age pregnancies were as popular as drinking and driving. Commercials were formed which brought about the popular saying Say Yes to saying No. Many pregnancies and lives were spared because of this. Another important event of our year was when 400 people walked across the U.S. to protect Nuclear Arms. Also five million Americans joined Hands Across America to r.aise money for the nation's hungry. Tom Cruise made his big premier in Top Gun , which was the year's best seller. Needless to say, Tom Cruise was the teenage heartthrob of the year. Following Top Gun was the Golden Child starring comedian Eddie Murphy. And for the first ever, an Australian import Crocodile Dundee was a top grosser even though it received bad reviews. As for Rock, The Boss, Bruce Springsteen's new album hit stores and set record sales. Madonna came back after marrying Sean Penn with a new image of short hair and hit the charts even more with hits such as Papa Don t Preach. Hard Rock was popular among most teens, with groups such as Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, and David Lee Roth. This year, computers were becoming popular, every home just had to have a computer to be considered a real home. One of the biggest events of the year was the Statue of Liberty celebrating her 100th birthday. An exuberant President Reagan and 6 million happy on-lookers watched the 28 minute barrage on national TV. French doctors found a new approach to birth control. A pill could be taken to effectively terminate pregnancies without causing any serious side effects. We saw a major gas war. Gas went down to 50$ a gallon. Sodas went up to 60$ in some places. The show made a big drop in price to $1.00 admission fee. The reason for this big drop was the craze for VCR's and Video tapes, more people were spending time at home watching a variety of movies than going out to the show to watch just one movie. 19 PERSONNEL Iboard of EDUCATIONI Members of the Board of Education are Johnny Atwell, Earl Pierce, president; Jim Thurman, Marvin Glass, vice-president, and Jimmy Jones. Not pictured is Bob Newcomb, secretary. Decisions and accomplishments of the school board in the last three years include improvement of the curriculum by adding computer education and placing computers throughout the school system. Also one was purchased for the central administrative office. The number of graduation requirements was increased to twenty-three, which changes the math and science unit requirements to two instead of one. Also adopted were new graduation requirements for Special Education and a new discipline and attendance policy with incentives for good atten- dance. Junior high students can now take Home Economics, and the libraries have been upgraded to meet and exceed the state requirements in all phases of materials and equipment. A new advisory committee for various vocational classes offered at NHS was formed, and a new parent advisory committee and policy for chapter one was formed and adopted. Also, an early childhood education known as Parents as Teachers program was implemented. A competency based evaluation committee met and laid guidelines for the present evaluation of teachers. Construction and repairs include three new homes in the district, concrete basketball courts on the elementary playgrounds, and walks and canopies on the Neelyville campus. The new science and business complex will be completed by the building trade classes. They did some of the construction and repairs mentioned. In the old high school building, new floors were laid, the heating system was rebuilt, and new window blinds were hung. The Hillview vocational building and the carpentry building were re-roofed. Other improvements include a new manual fire alarm system in the senior and elementary buildings and automat- ic safety fire equipment in the kitchen. Security lights have been placed in all the buildings. A PA system with push button call in and monitoring was installed at NHS. Hillview and Neelyville Elementary received a PA system and a new bell system. The board purchased tractors and brush-hogs for the Hillview and Neelyville campuses. A salad bar was added in the lunchroom and new lights and a scoreboard were supplied for the baseball field. 21 I ADMINISTRATION | Richard Rich N.H.S. Principal Margie Winder N.H.S. Secretary Harriet Dollins Federal Programs Sec. Billy J. Blagg Superintendent John H. Green Assistant Superintendent Kay Asher Sec. to Superintendent Lee R. Johnson Elementary Principal Jenny Blackman Hillview Secretary Betty Pennington Neelyville Secretary 22 [IN MEMORY OF MRS. BERRY | Mrs. Mary Berry served the Neelyville R-4 School District for almost twenty years as secretary to the high school principal. It was during those years that she touched the lives of a large number of students and faculty members. She was a devoted worker in the school, community and church. There was nev- er a time in those years of service that she ever criticized anyone regardless of circumstances. No one could have a better testimony or memoriam than what she achieved in those twenty years. The students, faculty and administration miss her and have established the Mary Alice Berry Scholar- ship Fund in her honor at the Neelyville Branch of Mercantile Bank. The devotion given to her work at school was only part of her life. She was a devoted wife who loved and cared for her family and their agricultural endeavors. Most certainly, Mrs. Berry's attitude toward life may have been best illustrated in the following poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson. CROSSING THE BAR Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea. But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark; For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crost the bar. 23 iTEACHERSl Bill Alexander Orville Allen Allen Bates Jr. High Science, Baseball Vo. They were 9-1 and playing well going into the conference tournament There, however, the offense that had carried them through the first 10 games was not a factor for them. As a result they lost 2 games. However, the Tigers are optimistic for the coming season. They hope to rely more on pitching and defense rather than depending so much on hitting. 56 Leading Hitters Pitching Ave: ERA: Shane Eaker 18 of 38 .462 Shane Eaker 2.00 Tim King 17 of 42 .405 Strike Outs: Melvin Hicks 16 of 40 .400 Shane Eaker 35 Bryan Robinson 16 of 41 .390 Fewest Walks: Jeff Fryer 8 of 11 .727 Shane Eaker 3 Hits: Most Innings: Shane Eaker 18 Bryan Robinson 25.1 RB's: Tim King 16 Bryan Robinson 16 HR's: Bryan Robinson 5 Runs Scored: Bryan Robinson 19 57 BOYS VARSITY BASKETBALL Tigers Opponents 54 Campbell 83 53 Doniphan 35 54 Ellsinore 84 47 Kennett 70 52 Ellsinore 60 48 Hayti 62 47 Bloomfield 62 54 Bloomfield 61 78 Clearwater 67 67 Ellsinore 79 77 Southland 37 69 Couch 55 65 Greenville 43 55 Doniphan 46 67 Naylor 49 74 Doniphan 60 83 Clearwater 80 58 Ellsinore 66 70 Naylor 62 59 Holcomb 36 42 Corning 44 54 Twin Rivers 51 45 Ellsinore 53 Record 12 wins 1 1 losses 2nd Place in Neelyville Invitational Tournament 3rd Place in Ozark Foothills Conference Tournament 2nd Place in Ozark Foothills Conference League Matt Hoffmann, Jewell Nash, Shane Eaker, Bruce Halliburton, Derrick Isom, Richie Cassinger, Larry Payne, Jarrel Haynes, Tim King, Greg Seeger and Coach Tomlinson. 58 Larry Payne or better known as Larry Bird ' is one of the hot- test players at NHS. In this school year of 1986 and 1987 the Future Homemakers of America is the largest organization in the state of Missouri with over 1 3,000 affiliated mem- bers. FHS HERO is an organization designed to be completely integrat- ed into a vocational home economics program. The intended purpose is to create their personal qualities, leadership skills and to accomplish future goals. This year Becky King served as state vice-president for Region 8 of the Missouri Association of Future Homemakers of America. It was Becky's responsibility to be the communicator for the state and regional levels. Also, she saw that all corre- spondence of the association was distributed to the FHA HERO chapters in Region 8. As a resource person she updated the region on all of the state and national projects. Becky's goal was to increase membership and to maintain FHA HERO support and enthusiasm. 74 | FHA VALENTINE QUEEN] Lyshawn Clay, third attendant, escorted by Troy McComb; Dora Barker, Valentine Queen, escorted by Kevin Vinson; Jared Webster, crown bearer; Audrey Slayton, flower girl; Kristie Wrather, retiring queen, escorted by Shannon Baker, Suzann Lady, first attendant, escorted by Mark Thurman; Kathy Scott, second attendant, escorted by Johnny Stanley. | FFA BARNWARMING SWEETHEART 1 Donna Alexander, second attendant, escorted by Shannon Baker; Kristie Wrather, Chapter Sweetheart, escorted by Eric Boyers, Lisa Ferguson, first attendant, escorted by Dale Fisher. 75 1 FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA | 1st row: Mr. Allen, advisor; E. The group ratified this Creed. We, as members of Neelyville Senior Quiz Bowl, agree to give others the impression that quiz bowl is a club for those who wish to expand their knowledge, become aware of the world around them, and become better individuals in general while still maintaining a balance of responsibility and enjoy- ment of life. Left: Tim Mansfield, Lyshawn Clay, Carrie Shephard, Shawna Swindle, Rod- ney Dunlap, Troy McComb, Bruce Halliburtin, Steve BarrorY The Neelyville FT A was issued a charter on October 12, 1966 by the Mis- souri State Teachers Association. The Sponsor was Mrs. Teel. Members are open to students (10-12) with above average grades who are good school citizens and who have expressed an interest in exploring a teaching career by serving as a cadet teacher. Members are often called on to substitute for teachers in emergency situations and to assist the teacher with special projects. Once each year members select a particular subject or grade and actually teach for at least three sessions under the guidance of the classroom teacher. All participants are issued an FTA Teaching Certificate at the end of the project.
