THE BEST OF TIMES Neelyville R-4 Schools Senior Section 5 Academics 25 Underclassmen 43 Activities and Clubs 53 Sports 65 Junior High 77 Neelyville Elementary 89 Hillview Elementary 97 A dvertisemen ts 105 1 The Best of Times have come and gone. These times we will always cherish 2 Our Best Times hove been shored with friends — Much sorrow, laughter and tears. We realize as we near the end, That these were the best of years. 3 Through times of victory ond times of defeat, We grew to love and share. Within our hearts we were never beat. Through the Best of Times we cared. Times of failing and times of success, These have all come to pass. These are the times that we love best. Our memories shall forever last. A Vicki Sheppard SENIORS 5 SENIOR SUPERLA TIVES These seniors have achieved an Hon- ors Diploma, which requires additional work in the areas of science, math and English. Because of their academic excel- lence, they are being honored as Senior Superlatives. Pamela Redele Fisher 6 Roger Lee Rich Vicki Lynn Sheppard 7 Suzanne (Wagner) Aden Karen Michelle Warren SENIOR CLASS of 1986 During our senior year, the debate over placing weap- ons in outer space called Star Wars was a major world controversy. Also, for the first time in years, the President of the United States, Ronald Reagan, and the leader of Russia, Premier Mikhail Gorbachev, met for peace talks in Geneva, Switzerland. Created for wind resistance and smoother rides, aero- dynamic cars were being made, with such names as Aer- ostar, Taurus and the new Mustang. Aids, a disease that weakens the body's immune sys- tem, finally causing death, was a new dreaded disease. It struck mainly homosexuals, drug users and those re- quiring blood transfusions. Actor Rock Hudson died from this desease. A new hope for cancer victims came with the an- nouncement of super cells ' This meant mixing white blood cells with hormones. It was not known if this would work, but doctors did have hope. Another historical moment in medicine occurred when the first woman ever gave birth to seven babies. Four of the children died. Also, the first woman received a me- chanical heart. Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Tina Turner and many others in the rock video scene influenced fashion with their two or more colors of hair, wild clothes and wierd jewelry, but jeans and sneakers were still a must with teenagers. Favorite songs were Mis Led by Kool and the Gang, Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go by Wham!, Private Dancer by Tina Turner, and God Bless the USA by Lee Greenwood. Another important happening of our time was that of famous singers becoming involved in important social is- sues These included creating WE ARE THE WORLD con- cerning world hunger and the benefit show done for farm aid. Sylvester Stallone made a big premier with his two smashing movies RAMBO, FIRST BLOOD PART II and ROCKY IV which made over $47 million in the first week of showing. Micheal J. Fox was the teenage heartthrob of the year. He starred in the number one and number two movies of the summer BACK TO THE FUTURE and TEEN WOLF. This year, VCR's and satellites were becoming com- mon. If a home didn't have the one, it most likely had the other. If a home had neither, then it wasn't considered real. A milestone happened when Coke changed its recipe. The new product was called New Coke, but everyone seemed to want the Old Coke back. It was returned to the market which made the New Coke now the Old Coke and the New Coke was named Coke Classic. It was all very confusing. The World Series was very important and special to all of us. It was the first time ever that the two Missouri teams, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Royals, faced each other in a World Series. It was called the 1-70 series for that was the interstate which separated St. Louis and Kansas City. St. Louis was expected to win; but as luck turned out, Kansas City did. It didn't matter though, because Missouri was still number one. Sodas stayed the same price, 50$. Gas went up, then down, then up ... It was in a price range of 96$ to $ 1.04. Candy bars went up to 40$. 9 N.H.S. TIGER Selection of TIGER QUEEN is made by KFVS-TV, CAPE Girardeau. All senior girls may submit their photo from which court selection is made. The days of hunting a hidden treasure, To the days of nursery rhymes. Today we become more involved In a world of total confusion. Instead of getting our problems solved, We linger in total illusion. Why can't the days be as simple As those good old elementary days? The days of playing and cute little dimples And all those mischievous ways. SKIP DA Y On the traditional Senior Sneak Day, seniors loaded up and headed for Big Springs in Van Buren. The cold seemed to have an effect for every- one wore a sweat shirt or a light jacket. Seniors warmed up though as they hike up a very high rock hill. Then it was back to the fire for some of Coach Tomlinson's famous school hamburgers. After eating, some seniors played volleyball, some played softball, and those who wanted to — rested. After resting for a while, some of the smarter seniors packed up to leave, but the others stayed in the cold and went swimming in Current River. The next day, most of the seniors had the snif- fles. 23 24 ACADEMICS 25 SCHOOL BOARD Bob Newcomb, member; Earl Pierce, vice-president; Curtis Reinbott, president; Jimmy Jones, member; John- ny Atwell, member. MISS PAM FISHER Region Eight President Pamela Fisher, the daughter of Pat Fisher, is serving as the 1985-86 Region Eight president. She also served as the chapter secretary her junior year The eighth region of Missouri consists of nineteen schools such as Bloomfield, Twin Riv- ers, Poplar Bluff, Dexter, Bemie, Bell City, Ad- vance, Doniphan, Puxico and Van Buren. FHA HERO is not just an organization for housewives as some people think, says Pam. It is one to prepare youth for tomorrow's soci- ety, develop leadership skills and to give ser- vice. It is also a chance to learn and grow through working with others. Pam stated that FHA has given her a lot of opportunities that she would not have re- ceived otherwise. She was able to go to Colum- bia, Missouri, for the State Leadership Confer- ence, Lake of the Ozarks for Public Speaking Camp and Salt Lake City, Utah, for National Leadership Conference. This fall she traveled to Little Rock, Arkansas, Her travels have giv- en her a chance to meet some really interest- ing people and to experience a lot of new things. Some of the ways FHA HERO tries to help prepare its members for tomorrow's society is through national projects such as Families and Futures, and Student Body. Families and Futures is a project co-spon- sored by March of Dimes and FHA HERO. It deals with teen pregnancy, child abuse, and birth defects. Student Body is co-sponsored by Frito-Lay, Pepsi-Co and FHA HERO It deals with the physical fitness of teens, teens getting along with their parents, and the general rounding of their personality. These are great projects, says Pam, and they help students learn and accomplish many new things. Pam went on to say, Some of the more rewarding experiences I have had in our chapter are Elementary Day, when we go to an elementary class and do an activity and have refreshments; the annual Thanksgiving Basket; and Toys for Tots, our Christmas Community project. Pam stated, Being an officer has taught me a sense of responsibility and how to go about accomplishing my set goals. It also gave me a sense of pride and success. Being an officer has been a lot of hard work and has taken a lot of my time, but I have enjoyed it and I am glad I became involved. MISS TRACI PENNINGTON Region Eight State V.-president Traci Pennington, the daughter of Doug and Betty Pennington, is serving as the 1985-86 Re- gion Eight State vice-president. Traci has been a member of Future Home- makers of America for three years. She joined her sophomore year. In her junior year, she was the treasurer for the local chapter and then served as local vice-president her senior year as well as state vice-president. In addition to being state vice-president, Traci also acted in the capacity of Missouri's national connection team member. The con- nection team member handles all of the corre- spondence between the state and national lev- els. Traci stated, FHA HERO has offered me many opportunities. One of which has been the opportunity to travel to many different places. But Future Homemakers of America has not only offered me many exciting oppor- tunities, it has also been very beneficial to me. It has helped me with leadership and also with accepting responsibility Traci went on to say, When I first took the position of state vice-president, I was really scared because I wasn't sure that I could do everything that I was responsible for. But I learned that you can do anything that you set your mind to. MRS. MARY BEAIRD Regional Advisor Mrs Beaird was an FHA member for six years through junior and senior high. In her lumor year she was elected recreational leader ancf then in her senior year, president. After graduation, she went to Three Rivers Community College and graduated with an as- sociate of arts degree. Then she went on to Southeast Missouri State University and gradu- ated with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Vocational Home Economics Education. Mrs. Beaird feels that home economics is the lifeline to the future. By being involved in a home economics class, students can learn skills and abilities that will make their adult- hood more manageable. That is why, states Mrs. Beaird, I enjoy teaching consumer home economics so much. I knew I wanted to be a home economics teacher when I was a junior in high school. I saw the potential for making home economics a tool that would be needed everyday. There are so many areas to re- search. It is no longer just 'cooking and serv- ing'. Grant you, these are very important skills to learn but also as important are the skills dealing with people, making wise consumer decisions, and maintaining a household, fam- ily, and career. FHA HERO is an integral part of any home economics program because it is the continu- ation of what is learned in the classroom. One does not function as completely as it should without the other. The potential for FHA HERO is endless. With this organization a student can learn how to organize and plan special activities. He or she can also learn how to present information to a group of people. The opportunity for de- veloping leadership is so great and the pro- gram is designed for all types of students, both male and female. 63 FHA VALENTINE QUEEN Queen Kristie Wrather Third Attendant, Amy Petty escorted by Paul Petty.
