A team cheerleaders are Cindy Blagg, Teresa Jones, Cubie Hill, Beverly Teague, Mattie Grandberry, Velena Fields, Brenda Berry, Cheryl Sticklin, and Marvel Hill. Cheerleaders Work It Out With Spirit and Enthusiasm! What does it mean to be a cheerleader? Of course, all members of the squad know the chants, formations, routines, and yells, but to a girl on the squad, cheering is more than taking a position. It is an opportunity to lead other students and fans in a show of spirit for the home team! Knowing how to do the routines is important, but the best quality of a cheerleading squad is enthusiasm. Cheerleaders kindle the spirit that inspires the team.. .to make a final burst of effort to win the game! Mrs. Dorlis McKinney sponsors the N.H.S. cheerleading squads. The Mouths That Roared! B team cheerleaders are Tammie Barker, Sharon Petit, Dolores Murray, Dorothy Watkins, Cathy Crossen, Debbie Wilson, Debbie At- well, Terry Morrow, and Deborah Carter. 79 Junior Beta Is Bridge between Junior and Senior High OFFICERS RICKY HILL Secretary RITA BOONE Vice-president DOLORES MURRAY Reporter DEBBIE ATWELL Treasurer JAMES PATTY President Members are first row: Mrs. Burris, sponsor, P. A yearbook is kept year af- ter year and is often re-read. For the price the annual is the most permanent means of advertising. In appreciation for those who have advertised in the 74 SPIRIT, the staff salutes the advertisers. A SALUTE TO STUDENTS Several people at NHS have special talents or abili- ties that make them distinctive. For this reason they are worthy of being called members of Who's Who at NHS. In recognition of these qualities we salute those students appearing in Who's Who for '74. And man does flourish but his time Survey our progress from our birth - We are set, we grow, we turn to earth. Courts adieu, and all delights All bewitching appetites. Sweetest breath as clearest eye Like perfumes go out and die; Vain the ambition of kings Who seek by trophies and dead things To leave a living name behind. And weave but nets to catch the wind. from LINES ON THE INEVITABILITY OF DEATH This poem is dedicated to the memory of Donald E. Turner who was killed in a motorcycle accident on August 18, 1973. Donald, who was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Turner, would have been in the eighth grade this year. Donald E. Turner 142 Yours Truly, The Editor At Neelyville High School THE TIGER SPIRIT staff takes over its job each year with little or no experience in publishing a book, since on- ly seniors are eligible to enroll for the journalism course. Invariably the staff faces a multitude of problems that must be solved quickly and in- telligently if the yearbook it produces is a successful venture. Because the aim of this staff has been to show and tell interestingly and effectively the story of Neelyville High School, it is hoped that this volume will fulfill the functions for which it was meant. Today the chief function of a yearbook is the same as it was when yearbooks were first begun. It is a memory book-a family album of the school. It tells the complete history of one year (1973-74) of school life. It is, of course, important to tell about the school's accomplish- ments in sports, and to give credit to the students and coaches who made it possible. However, it is just as important to picture outstanding re- sults achieved in the fields of the humanities - languages, literature, art, music, history, and the sciences. It is our sincere wish that this issue of THE TIGER SPIRIT will in- spire a new pride and a new allegiance to Neelyville High School and that new, long strides will be made toward the worthwhile goals of dig- nity, citizenship, togetherness, and school spirit. Grateful acknowledgment is made to many individuals-administra- tion members, faculty, fellow-students, and business personnel who made this book possible. 143 144 PISCHeL Yea RBOOKS A OrVVO OP !OH% O • ■ KAACIl M ••ua.
