I Grimsley Volume XXXIII NEEDHAM BROUGHTON HIGH SCHOOL, RALEIGH, N, C. 27605, SEPTEMBER 4, l968 No.1 WEl.COME CLASS 0F 1971 'lielewlll Greetings From Principal Norton The summer vacation is over, and a new school year is beginning. I hope the summer has been good, and that it has been a rewarding one for you. As you return to Broughton for the school year 1968-l969 you should strive to make it the best year you have had by participating in as many of the school functions as possible and working to prepare yourself for the future. This is the fortieth year of opera- tion for Broughton, and each year has seen the school improve in at- tempting to give each student what he needs for the future. A school is what the student body makes it, and it is up to you to make this the best year yet for Broughton because YOU ARE BROUGHTON. There are many opportunities for you to participate in the life of this Changes Made Around Broughton Many changes have taken place at Broughton during the summer months. There are I5 cement benches placed around our campus. These benches were left to us by the Class of 1968. They will come in handy for relaxing on sunny days during lunch period. Also, thanks to the Class of 1968, the boy's gym has a name. The let- ters Holliday Gymnasium honor- ing former principal Holliday were placed on the fron! of the building in June. The painters haie been very busy. The first and third floors were com- pletely repainted. Many of the class- rooms were repainted. And last, new purple lines were painted on the gym fioor. The Safety Commit- tee took over the job of repainting the parking spaces. The rough places in the sidewalks have been repaired. A new sidewalk extends from the back parking lot to the teacher's lounge. A new floor section has been layed in the front hall. The section is the seal of Broughton and adds much dignity to the front entrance. school and to give of yourself while you prepare for the futureg but re- member, you will make the year what it is. To the Sophomores, 'fWelcome to Broughton. Participate in as many school activities as possible, and at the same time start building a good high school record. To the Juniors and Seniors, Wel- come Backf' The leadership of the school is on your shoulders and I tmst you will accept this challenge with eagerness. Best wishes for an excellent year! Routine maintenance such as varnishing and fixing doorknobs has continued all summer. There are many new faces on the staff. Mr. Norton, our new princi- pal. has been active all summer. He is expecting I3 new teachers on the staff. Mr. Long, now assistant prin- cipal, has been on hand to help Mr. Norton. The cheerleaders have a new sponsor. Mrs. Carter has taken Mrs. Baker's placc. Many plans are being made. One plan that will interest everyone con- cerns lhe cafeteria annex, It is hoped that the annex can be con- verted into a student centered area. In other words, we may finally get that long-awaited and badly needed student lounge. The Student CO- OPerative Committee is planning to provide games and other activities for the students during lunch pe- riods. Other plans are being made to eventually remove all the trailers from the front lawn. The temporary classrooms in the auditorium, how- ever, will remain another year. -If the cafeteria annex express line is not needed, the school store committee hopes to take it over. They will then close the store in the basement, and all supplies will be sold in the cafeteria. The counter will serve as a fabulous display counter. And last, but not least, a new hot water boiler has been installed in the main building for our comfort on those cold winter days when everyone is wishing it would snow, Due to the hard work of many people, Broughton is again ready to welcome back her student body. Sophomores may not recognize the changes in Broughton. But they, like everyone else, can look forward to the best school year ever! . :e i o 'X gi l929 From the President-Buddy Jenrette I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you all to Broughton High School, Those students who have been at Broughton before know what a fine school we have. Those of you who are new to Broughton this year will find that we have one of the truly finest high schools in the entire South. Broughton ofiers many organizations that are of a widc varicty. I would encourage you to investigate these and hnd one that is of a particular interest to you and then join this club. This is a really grand opportunity for you to get involved in the extra curricular life at Broughton as well as to increase your knowledge in a particular area outside the classroom. Serving on a student council committee is a very good means of service to your school that I hope you will find some interest in. But if you are not on a committee and still want to serve, there are surely many other ways to serve. There are dances to work on, candy to sell, class dinner tickets to sell, class service projects to work on, and many other ways to serve. The main point is to get involved, it will surely aid in making your school life much more enjoyable and memorable. Your student council chairmen and committee members have put in a tremendous amount of work this summer to make the school year a little more enjoyable for the entire student body. We have considered various suggestions and have initiated some new ideas that we will be making aware to you in the next few weeks. We are always open for your sug- gestions and I hope that you will feel free to bring them to me or any other member of the council. I'll be around the office area most every morning before school and during first period and will always be de- lighted to talk with you. Needham B. Broughton Part Two-The Interim Forty years is a very long time For little as Well as for great events: While FDR was saving the nation, John Phillip Sousa directed the Broughton band! While Hitler's troops marched through the Saarland, Broughton won first place in major sports! And in the tragic year of '39 Broughton got its first motion picture machine. The New Deal and the War are over now, But Broughton remains well-stocked With bands, sports teams, and quite a few motion picture machines. Yes, time marched on With the gradual becoming of an institution: A Little Theatre one year, a Winged Words another 3 The Morson-Broughton athletic poolg And-to prove it all was worth it- Now a Bill Poteat, then a Reynolds Price. A young school in a younger nation: Let us enjoy what history we have.
