Needham B. Broughton Part One-1929 What can a year like that mean to us? We read about it in the history books: Our parents were children then. But on the edge of a place named Cameron Forest On a ten-acre lot off Saint Mary's Street The design of William Henley Dietrick Had already made itself known: A quasi-Renaissance kind of style that remained intact for quite a while, And the state's only school with, of all things, a clock tower. As we from such recent memory know Contractors tend toward the slow So one Day fthe third of September of '29J The bill of complaints was rather long. The sounds of construction assaulted the ears, The smell of paint assaulted the nose: No books, no desks, no chairs around: No tiles on the floor, the grounds still a jungle, And even the gem missing from the setting: The tower had no clock. But one is given to understand That things were taken pretty much in stride: There was a graduation in 1930. And in the context of financial chaos, millions out of work, soup kitchens, bread lines, and a Latin scholar named Herbert Hoover, The school got a name-a real one. Quoth C. B. Edwards, businessman: I respectfully suggest that it be named the Broughton High School for Needham B. Broughton, who served on the school committee for many years and who did faithfully work as long as he was on it. I know 'him and associated with him in boyhood and was in business with him for about forty years. I do not think there is a man in Raleigh who helped more young people and did more for the upbuilding of our city and its public institutions according to his means.
