Needham B. Broughton Part One-1929 What can a year like that mean to us? We read about it in the history books: Our parents were children then. But on the edge of a place named Cameron Forest On a ten-acre lot off Saint Mary's Street The design of William Henley Dietrick Had already made itself known: A quasi-Renaissance kind of style that remained intact for quite a while, And the state's only school with, of all things, a clock tower. As we from such recent memory know Contractors tend toward the slow So one Day fthe third of September of '29J The bill of complaints was rather long. The sounds of construction assaulted the ears, The smell of paint assaulted the nose: No books, no desks, no chairs around: No tiles on the floor, the grounds still a jungle, And even the gem missing from the setting: The tower had no clock. But one is given to understand That things were taken pretty much in stride: There was a graduation in 1930. And in the context of financial chaos, millions out of work, soup kitchens, bread lines, and a Latin scholar named Herbert Hoover, The school got a name-a real one. Quoth C. B. Edwards, businessman: I respectfully suggest that it be named the Broughton High School for Needham B. Broughton, who served on the school committee for many years and who did faithfully work as long as he was on it. I know 'him and associated with him in boyhood and was in business with him for about forty years. I do not think there is a man in Raleigh who helped more young people and did more for the upbuilding of our city and its public institutions according to his means.

Broughton opened for the 1968-1969 year with an 'enrollment of l,798. There are 580 Seniors, 616 Juniors, 635 Sopho- mores, and 39 special education students. The drop in enrollment is caused by the new high school, San- derson. Confusion reigns at Broughton High School this all, and for a good reason: Two schools are sharing the same roof. Because of Sanderson High School's late Enishing, it was neces- sary to allow those students who will attend Sanderson make use-of the Broughtnn's facilities. The girls gym was made into temporary classrooms over the sum- mer. These classrooms are similar to those in the auditorium which were built last year. In addition, several trailers have been provided for Sanderson's use. The parking lot, too, has been affected by the overcrowding. Broughton students have been forced to give up their spaces for Sanderson teachers. Thus, the num- ber of students owning spaces is smaller than last year. The library at Broughton also lends its facilities to Sanderson stu- Therefore, books become dents. quite scarce when over three thou- sand people hue access to them. Also shared is e PA. system, the hook shelves, and the playing fields. The best exam e of the con- fusion can probagly be seen at the lunch periods. A little over a thousand le eating limch at the PWP same time is quite hectic. The Cafe- teria staff manages to feed them all. Through all this, however, the two schools have cooperated excel- lentliy with each other, and until San erson opens later inthis year, Broughton will remain crowded but still livable.
