Homecom ing-1964 Joe Jenkins, chairman of our 1964 Homecoming, sought to prove Friday the thirteenth is not always an unlucky day. His vivacious committee was behind him throughout the entire month of preparations. Suddenly the spirit of the festivities got in to everyone's bloodstream and before Joe could catch his breath, he discovered the entire student body was bending over backward to lend him aid. Homeroom float chairmen tried to out-do one another with eye- catching float slogans. After choosing a slogan, the dreadful question arose-Where do we get a truck or trailer to put this thing on? After the panic arising from this question was settled, students, as well as teachers, pitched in to make their float the most original and elaborate in the parade. Chicken wire and purple and yellow Kleenex were searched for in every store, house, and alley in town. Twelve o'clock Thursday night arrived with floats only half completed. In despera- tion, students worked Friday during the day to finish the precious floats by the deadline. Would Friday the thirteenth really be unlucky for the Caps? Would the floats go down Fayetteville Street unfinished? Fortunately luck prevailed. By 3:30 in the afternoon, Mike Jordan, the float chairman, saw 72 lovely, completed floats pull away from the Broughton athletic field and head for Memorial Auditorium. The tension had ceased, and everyone could breathe freely again. lt looked like a splendid Homecoming, despite the date. The Hospitality Committee made and sold miniature purple and gold corsages and the Projects Committee sold Homecoming pennants. . During the halftime, the sponsors were brought onto the field in luxu- rious convertibles. The marching band and the majorettes formed various modes of transportation for the sponsors to step from within to be presented to Broughton students, parents, and past graduates. Friday the thirteenth drew to a close and everyone departed to his home-tired and ready to dream of Homecoming 1964-one to be long remembered by all. Mr. Holyfield, with Chairmen Joe Jenkins and Mike Jordan. 180

Political vc-it 'flohnson or Goldwater?,' This was the big ques- tion preying on our minds as we entered the boys gym, transformed into a miniature replica of the actual political convention. The mock election was sponsored by Miss Helen Runyon, American Govern- ment, and International Relations teacher. The entire school was keyed up for the assembly. The campaign commenced with an elaborate poster parade for both candidates. Folk singers, demon- strations, and horns all added to the attraction. Jule Mann and Bill Carmichael spoke for John- son, while Gus Anderson and Robert Casey spoke 182 1 'sr t .. f' sf And so it was, Hurricane Coldwater. . . . for Goldwater. The qualifications, policies, and traits of the candidates were enumerated. Speeches were interrupted by yelling, clapping, and stamping as students agreed or disagreed. We left the gym and went to our polls to vote. Most students knew which candidate they felt was most qualified, but others were still pondering over the question. The final count indicated 1,121 votes for Johnson, 894 for Goldwater. The electoral vote favored Johnson 380.5 votes to 157.5. The decision had been made and taken extremely seriously by every student. And politics the Broughton way. . .
