Q, Cheerleaders WHO YA GONNA YELL FOR? BROUGH- TON HIGH SCHOOL And for Broughton High School the 1964-1965 cheerleaders did yell! Tryouts were held on a competitive basis in the early spring last year with each girl doing two cheers of her choice. The girls were required to have at least an 82.5 average. Those chosen were Kate Johnson, Kay Lumsden, Virginia Byrum, and Barbara Wall from the senior classg Geor- gette Kahdy, Chan Poyner, and Jill Thurlow from the junior classg and Vickie Gorrell and Julie Marshall from the sophomore class. Kay Lums- den was elected head cheerleader and Mrs. Sandy Baker served as advisor. The group began its practice the last week in August, going to Long Beach to work on old cheers and learn new ones. Throughout the school year the girls also practiced every Thursday after school. Despite the fact that the Caps did not have a winning season, the cheer- leaders were always present to promote and maintain school spirit, en- thusiasm and good sportsmanship.
