Swimming 0 Broughton swimmers began their season with a variety of hindrances. Beginning practice twelye weeks later than the previous year, a new coach, Joel Long, found a group of relatively inexperienced tryouts. Despite the limitations of a one hour workout, Long prepared his swim- mers for their first meet, the East Carolina College lnvitationals. The Caps placed fourth against these opponents as Greensboro's Grimsley and . , Charlotteis Myers Park. The highlight of the meet was Broughtonis victory - in the 200 yards freestyle relay. In dual meet competition Broughton suffered defeats by Myers Park, . X gk Q Q Rose of Greenville and Grimsley of Greensboro. , 'Mp 9.1 Q1 gif fa 7 , l gnoum, me :APS K y J , i . Broughton came closer to winning the second meet with these teams, demonstrating the value of experience. Broughtonis best showing was not any of the victories over Chapel Hill or Page of Greensboro, but the second meet with Grimsley. A fired up Cap's team led until the last event, which ended with a narrow victory by Grimsley. The Caps placed fourth in the State meet. Highlights for Broughton in this meet were the victory in the 200 yards freestyle relay and Mike Mclntyre being edged out for second place in one meter diving. Coach Long anticipates an excellent season next year with most of his swimmers returning and good prospects from transfers and rising sophomores. Unlike past coaches, he encourages year round swimming. Co-Captain Bob Wickham starts on leg of the winning relay. f . f , lgzarv A' YW ',,, , ' V K 1,4 1 C , g f -..E 1111,-.--Q, f X 1, 1 ' fi f '2.,uf if . .fa 5 f ,, W, -fi
