CONFERENCE PLAYOFFS After Broughton won the Conference Cham- pionship, the team still had to win the Confer- ence Playoifs to be represented at the State Tournament. ln the semi-finals, the Caps de- feated Wilmington,s formidable team 63 to 60. The 63-60 win over strong Fayetteville in the finals enabled Broughton to represent the East- ern AAAA Conference for the State Champion- ship. STATE TOURNAMENT Broughton's hopes to be State Champs were wiped out in Greensboro by Reynolds of Wins- ton-Salem. The Reynolds team edged Broughton out 64-63 in two overtimes. After BI'0l.1gl'lt0I'1,S 68-57 win over Burlington in the first game of the season, Greensboro edged by the Caps, 54+-53. A second game with Greensboro finished with a rever- sal: Broughton outpaced Grimsley, 65 to 63. After an easy 81-67 victory over High Point, Broughton was usurped in the second match by the inspired High Pointers, 57-62. Accounted as one of the most excit- ing games of the season was the Caps surprising run- away, 105 to 76, victory over East Mecklenburg of Charlotte. Three of the High Point players seem to feel superior to such scrambles for the ball. Bridges is fuzzy in more ways than one. ..n 1- x 1 W .J Tv-' I , uf- 2? I. S' ,, - -if twig,- .f.

The Caps placed fourth against these opponents as Greensboro's Grimsley and . , Charlotteis Myers Park. The highlight of the meet was Broughtonis victory - in the 200 yards freestyle relay. Broughton came closer to winning the second meet with these teams, demonstrating the value of experience. Broughtonis best showing was not any of the victories over Chapel Hill or Page of Greensboro, but the second meet with Grimsley. A fired up Cap's team led until the last event, which ended with a narrow victory by Grimsley. The Caps placed fourth in the State meet. Highlights for Broughton in this meet were the victory in the 200 yards freestyle relay and Mike Mclntyre being edged out for second place in one meter diving. Coach Long anticipates an excellent season next year with most of his swimmers returning and good prospects from transfers and rising sophomores. Unlike past coaches, he encourages year round swimming.
