'4v Holes in the Sky Amid torrents of rain, the Fayetteville team kept its Eastern 4-A Championship alive by defeating Broughton, 30 to 7, November 1. The Bulldogs knocked the Caps back on their heels and stayed in control of the game to end Broughton's eight game winning streak. Tommy Bradford, the Bulldog's 220 pound full back, scored 22 of the Bul,ldog's 30 points. Rally I With the powerful running of half-back Digit Lautheridge and a ufired-upu defense, the Black- birds defeated the Caps, for their second straight Eastern 4-H and State Championship, 6-O. After having an earlier touchdown called back, the Caps seemed more alert throughout the game, but Rocky lVlount's weight advantage prevailed. The game was close from start to finish with the team getting the most breaks, and taking advantage of them, win- ning. Aftermath Anticlimatic to every successful football season is the recognition of outstanding participants. Two Broughton players were named to play in the annual Shrine Bowl Game. Those participating were Wayne Bell and Woody Eatman. As members of the Shrine Bowl team, they also play in the East-West Game. Three of the eleven composing the 4-A All-East Team were chosen from the Cap's squad. Bell was again listed. Bill Keene and Doug Bridges were also named, and Phil Holden received honorable men- tion. Bell, captain of the team made the All-State 4-A Team.

Show of Violence The Caps took their fourth victory by defeating Durham September 27. Tommy Johnson scored the' first TD on an eight yard run, after a sixty-six yard drive by Broughton. The kick failed to secure the extra point. Doug Bridges intercepted a Bulldog pass to start a third quarter drive, which netted seven points. Mike Pedneau scored from the one. With 2:41 re- maining, Durham scored on a three yard run. Both sides were hurt considerably by injuries. The Caps lost Bell before the half. Dan Boone, Brough- ton center, broke his leg during first half. He was unable to play for the rest of the season. Third team reserves were in position for the Caps in the second half after Pedneau went off the field injured. Catch- 22 Woody Eatman passed for three TD's to defeat Wilmington October 4. Johnny Bishop scored first, followed by tallies of Wayne Bell. The Wildcats, forced to pass, drove 65 yards on the second half kick-off for their score. An Eatman to Bridges pass set Broughton up for a Cap TD. Bell broke over for the score, but an offside penalty put the ball on the 10. Eatman threw to White in the end zone for his third TD. Bell kicked for the point, making the iinal score 22-7. In Praise of Folly The Caps defeated the Goldsboro Earthquakes in a fourth quarter rally. The game was deadlocked from the second until the fourth quarter until a 53 yard drive put Wayne Bell in position for a tally from the third yard line. The third TD was the result of a neglected kickoff. The ball, kicked by Bell, eluded the Earthquakes and was recovered by Buddy Atkins. On the first play, Howard White scored for another TD. Bell's attempt at the extra point was good. Mike Pedneau intercepted a Quake pass and ran 43 yards, where White took over for the final TD. Bellas kick was blocked, leaving the score 26-6. Wipe - out! Broughton chalked up its seventh victory against Jacksonville, 26-6. Raleigh took the opening kickoff and went 75 yards in eight plays for their first touch- down. Terry Benson-went over from two yards out. Other scoring for the Caps included a five yard run by halfback Buddy Atkins, a one yard run by quarter- back Woody Eatman, and a 27 yard punt return by halfback Tom Johnson. at 3 my yr s -.- 7'
