The faculty-our friends, helpers, and sometimes adversaries, the sine qua non of our scholastic experience. They stalked the halls, plagued us with requests to show passes, checked rolls, filled out pink slips, green slips, yellow slips, blue sheets and attendance cards, averaged grades, made out tests, graded us, kept us in, advised clubs, went to meetings, and SOMEHOW, in the midst of all that was going on, found time to teach. They came in every size, shape, and form. There were the quiet teachers, the violent teachers, the easy teachers, the funny teachers, the young-and-in-love teachers, and that odd brand, the English teachers. And each had his own idiosyncrasies, which we sometimes found annoying but which always lifted the class out of its humdrumness. By the end of the year, Mr. Blakeway had fully convinced us that our ancestors had made a fatal blunder by coming to the colonies . . . Mrs. Peacock always had umpteen things going on at once, and we would sit dumfounded in the midst of it all while she did a scene from Macbeth . . . Mr. Steed and Mr. Broadway always had a kind word for all . . . Mrs. Donavant would smile sweetly and give tests that neither Kildare nor Casey could pass . . . The language teachers would glibly garble some fluent phrases at us and we would sit and stare and wish the bell would ring. From 8:45 to 3:30 we were part of the world of our teachers. And after it was all over, we remembered them with gratefulness for the efforts they made to give us Education.
