'We pauae to review the gear . 1962-1963 was for us a year of growth, of surprise, of change . . . Some things, of course, went along pretty much as always-there were the games and pep rallies, the traditional holidays fplus one day for snow, which we thought would never comel. As usual, the respective classes sold more barbecue, doughnuts, and magazines than any preceding class. There were the days of Looking Ahead . . . first came College Day, then Career Day, and finally Military Obligations Day for the boys. In addition, many seniors participated in Student Government Day in May. The dramatics classes gave plays, the journalism classes produced newspapers, the music groups put on programs, and the arts and commercial classes won prizes. The dances came and went, beginning with the FHA Homecoming Dance and ending with the beautiful Senior Prom. But many things were different . . . A Service Club speaker stirred up controversy that continued for many months afterward, and an unorthodox Easter assembly shocked many of us out of our complacency. In January the Theatre-in-Education project came to Broughton, bringing with it talented Shakespearean actors who presented portions of Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, and Twelfth Night to our delight and enchantment. In the spring the school received an unexpected gift of chinchillas, and in June the seniors graduated in Reynolds Coliseum instead of the traditional Memorial Auditorium, which was undergoing repairs. As usual, Broughton students copped a large number of scholarships and awards, and this year Mr. Holliday, our principal, received a national leadership award, which brought honor to our school. Much was going on in the Raleigh community, too . . .g Many well-known people came to our city, and many of us went to see or hear them. Ray Charles, the Kingston Trio, and Peter, Paul and Mary attracted the Weejun-wearing set, while Vice-President Lyndon Johnson talked to Democrats, and Reynolds Price, a former Broughton student, published a widely-acclaimed novel. Classic movies came to the Ambassador once a month, and we formed lines a block long to see Pride and Prejudice or David Copperfield. For the first time in several years Broughton had a rival high school, brand new Enloe High, in Raleigh. The Legislature met this year, but in a new home, for this was the Year of the Opening of the Statehouse, a magnificent edifice which produced enough praise and criticism to last the capital city journalists for some time to come. More and more we became aware of the world situation, too . . . The Cuba crisis in October and the tragedy of the Thresher in April awakened new feelings within us as we felt ourselves approaching the responsibilities of adulthood. Of such was the year 1962-1963 . . . a time for us to learn, to seek, and to grow. And now we stop a moment to reflect on our growth, in the LATIPAC 1963.
