1980 PIONEER Nebraska City High School Nebraska City, Ne. Volume 34 DECADES OF DESTINY The 1980 Pioneer Yearbook, Decades of Destiny, presents in words, photos, and graphics the 1979-1980 school year. With the centennial of Nebraska City High School, we have tried in this edition of the Pioneer to preserve the present and recall the past. In years to come this annual will be your source of many happy memories at NCHS. CONTENTS Dedication .............2 Senior Class ...........3 Organizations ........ 19 Underclassmen .........39 Activities ............65 Faculty ...............93 Sports ............... 99 Academics ........... 125 Patrons ............. 132 Index ............... 143 DEDICATION We dedicate the 1980 Pioneer, Decades of Destiny to the fine people of Nebraska City, who, through their generous help and financial backing, made this annual possible. After a successful effort by the “Otoe County Taxpayers Association” to limit the property tax portion of the school district’s budget to zero percent, the school board eliminated the yearbook as part of the cost cutting necessitated by their obligation. Concerned Citizens and parents came together and formed the Nebraska City Pioneer Yearbook Boosters. Through their efforts, the financial backing of the community, and the students who worked on the yearbook staff after school hours, the 1980 Pioneer became a reality. Hours of rehersal arc required to prepare for performances. The band lived up to its name by receiving Excellent ratings at the Pershing Marching Contest, the Platts-mouth Marching Contest, and the District Music Contest. Because of their reputation, the band was invited to play at Worlds of Fun in Kansas City on May 17. 1980. The band members earned money for the trip by selling various household items and by serving a desert luncheon during the Arbor Day Celebration. They also performed at the Girls State Volleyball games, all home football games and furnished the pep band for other home sports events. : 20 21 DRILLTEAM DANCED THE YEAR AWAY DRILLTEAM MEMBERS: (bottom row • left to right) Connie Campbell. During the football season, they accompanied the band at halftime, performing a dual role as the flag corps and dance team. For the winter sports season, the group united as a drill-dance team and provided half-time entertainment at basketball games. Their precision routines also complemented band performances and contests. In addition to being a visual attraction at school events throughout the year, the group supported Fun Night by sponsoring the cake walk and participating in a Fun Night skit. I . 22 Denise, Laura. Melinda, and Connie practice for a performance. They are the key to a physically fit “today” and a promise for a brighter “tomorrow”. Mr. John Barton sponsors the Letterwinners Club. 34 FCA MEETINGS FEATURE GUEST SPEAKERS The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) focuses upon promoting brotherhood using Christian principles. Their meetings often feature well known guest speakers. NCHS was well represented at FCA’s principal gathering. the “Weekend of Champions”, held at Fremont (March 22-23). Misters Jim Brockhaus and Dan Ostransky sponsor the group. 35 STUDENT COUNCIL HAS BUSY YEAR The Student Council’s busy year was comprised of fund raising, school improvements, fun projects and taking an active role in Student Government. Money-raising projects included administering the soft-drink machine and providing concessions for home sports events, as well as the sponsoring the Homecoming Dance, the Fun Night Dance, Stage Show and Carnival. The funds that were raised were donated to a variety of school improvement projects: lounge furniture was re- furbished, a concession stand was built and trees were planted on the school grounds. Contributions were given to support speech contestants and the Greater Nebraska Science Fair. Money was also provided for the acquisition of a micro-processor. District offices of President and Secretary were held by Valerie VanderVeen, and Mitch Martineau was District Treasurer. (Fun Night pictures purchased from Burns Studio) HOURS OF VOLUNTARY WORK GOES INTO 1980 YEARBOOK This is the yearbook that almost didn’t exist. When the yearbook and school newspaper were deleted from the school district budget for the 1979 80 school year, concerned parents and the business community joined to create the Nebraska City Pioneer Yearbook Boosters. Ann Schreiner, president, presented the schoolboard with a proposal that the Boosters publish the yearbook. The project was approved with the condition that the Boosters would accept financial liability for the book. The community responded: and, within ten days, the necessary funds were on deposit. The project was endorsed and a commitment had been made. Students worked voluntarily in the evenings, after school and on weekends to produce the 1980 Pioneer. Nearly thirty volunteers worked on the book during the year. As with any group of volunteers, some left for other commitments while others joined when they had free time. Fortunately, there a nucleus to bind the group effort together. Senior workers included Karen Kas-bohm, Cheryl Malzer, Laura Miyoshi, Kim Schmidt and Patty Sedoris. Jana Henderson, junior, provided the artwork. Sophomore contributors were Lisa Davison, Julie Hauptman and Linda Kasbohm. First semester helpers were Kathy Badberg, Melinda Behrns, Laurie Edminsten, Sally Martineau, Meri Merideth, Dawn Ross. Lori White and Joni Yamauchi. Freshman Sue Schmidt joined the staff second semester. This yearbook proves that, lid or no lid, the students wanted a yearbook and were willing to put forth the effort to produce one. At the outset, the goal of the Boosters was to provide the students and others in the community with a remembrance of the 100th Senior Class to graduate from the Nebraska City Senior High School. That goal has been achieved. Above: Stephen Harvey, the yearbook advisor. owner Stephen Harvey Photography confers with first semester staffers. It has been a rewarding experience for all involved in the making of this book. The students have learned that they could produce a yearbook on their own. in their liesure time, they have developed their creative abilities and let their imaginations guide them in the layout and design of the pages and the artwork, they have found that there is much more to making a yearbook than just picking out pictures and placing them on the page. The adult sponsors have had a pleasurable experience working with the students, offering advice, guidance, and supervision. There will be those quick to criticize and find fault with the book since it was not done under the supervision of an experienced journalism instructor and those who will applaud the book as one of the finest annuals ever produced by NCHS. Truely this is a unique annual in that it is the only one ever done outside the school system. Sure there are going to be a few typo errors, and maybe a few journalistic mistakes, but we feel that both the students and the boosters did an excellent job considering that neither the students or any of the adults have ever published a yearbook. Next year the yearbook will again be published by the school system, so enjoy this annual and protect it. You are one of the 400 lucky persons to have this one of a kind annual.
