CO E CO CD CO CO CD THE PIONEER 1979 Nebraska City Senior High Nebraska City, Nebraska Volume 33 Nebraska City Senior High students really experienced the theme “Bursting at the seams, with a large class of sophomores, the crowded parking lot, nearly 130 members in the marching band, and being sandwiched in the locker areas between classes. Because of the crowded conditions, one special education class had to be moved from the regular classroom to a room opposite Dr. Fielder’s office. Crowded conditions mark school year; Students involved themselves with many activities during the school year in both school and community activities. A new addition to the 1978-79 school year was the Pioneer Football Field, which is in the back of the school. The Homecoming activities played a big part in the beginning of the school year. Students worked together throughout the Homecoming week decorating halls, and had a pep rally every day. A bon fire was also held, where some of the football players dressed up as cheerleaders. Several class members helped get the year off to a good start by forming a unique club, the Burr Brothers, to help raise school spirit. The senior class members were active in a variety of school events, from athletics to dramatics, organizations to activities. Mark Maskell was on the Brain Bowl team which took second place in competition sponsored by KMA Radio in Shenandoah. As the year drew to a close, seniors began looking forward to life beyond high school. Many took trips to area colleges, some talked to military recruiters, others made job plans. But, as the day of graduation approached, there was general agreement that students were proud, indeed, to be Pioneers. Their class sponsors were Mr. Ron Booth and Mr. Jim Callen. During the fall, the juniors were busy raising money selling concessions at home games. They also raffled off a hog. The winner, Teresa Wright. NCHS senior, was announced during a home game. During Homecoming, juniors participated in hall decoration, pyramid building, and the pie-eating contest. Towards the end of the year juniors met to discuss plans, theme, band, and decorations for the prom. They had been working all year to raise money for this last tribute to the seniors of NCHS. Sophomores showed their spirit and enthusiasm during Homecoming week, when they won one of the spirit contests at a pep rally. They also gathered the boxes for the bonfire. Many sophomores took an active part in athletics and organizations at NCHS this year, showing that they were proud to be part of the Pioneer tradition at Nebraska City Senior High. It meant being the oldest, and having many special opportunities reserved for freshmen — opportunities like going out to senior high for several classes a day, trying out for the drill team and cheerleading squads, taking CPR classes, and being able to join some high school organizations. Many freshmen took advantage of these opportunities, and joined such organizations as FBLA, FCA, and the senior high choir and marching band. Those students who were involved in music had an extra incentive this year — going to the Festival of the Rockies the last week of May. Many money-making activities were completed, both on an individual and a group basis, in order to meet the cost of the trip. A number of freshmen were also involved in athletics, and competed both on the junior high and the senior high levels. Football, volleyball, boys’ and girls' basketball, wrestling, tennis, golf and track all had a good representation from the ninth grade class. Hayward Elementary School was completed in time for the fall opening, and the new Pioneer football field hosted the home football games for the first time. This was the last year for two of the administrators in the school system. Dr. Carl Fielder, high school principal, and Mr. James Hanks, junior high principal, submitted their resignations early in the year, to be effective at the end of the school year. Mr. David Blecha, senior high vocational agriculture teacher, resigned at the semester. Senior high was bursting with activity this year, with organization events involving many students. Guest speakers, field trips, and other classroom activities made the academic year go by quickly. Above: Mr James Withee. Superintendent of Schools Right: Dr. Carl Fielder. These students received a second place trophy and a $100 scholarship for each member. The contest was academic, consisting of 16 schools from Nebraska, Iowa, and Missouri. Publication staffs work hard 130 The Otoean staff put in many hours of class- and out-of-class time this year to publish the paper. Staff members were composed of students in the journalism class. Mrs. Judy Johnson was the instructor. The paper stayed with a magazine-type of format again this year, but included a new section of candid shots of students and faculty, to add its own unique touch. Staff activities included a Christmas party with the yearbook staff, and holding raffles for treats several times during the year. Top: Staff members are, front row: Janet Stoll. Sally Martineau. The Nebraska City speech team was host for two other tournaments — an invitational which it won, and the district speech contest, in which it placed third overall. The one-act play, in which eight students were involved, was No One Wants to Know. This play was presented at the one-act play contest held at Peru State College on January. Joni Yamauchi was the student assistant for speech activities this year. Miss Vicki Wilken, speech teacher, said improvement in this year’s team is due to the growing number of students involved. Students kept busy with many activities, sports, and organizational functions. Required and elective classes were taken, and all seniors completed CPR training before graduation. The end of the year brought many goodbyes. The students and faculty said goodbye to Dr. Fielder, who had been principal at NCHS for ten years. Other goodbyes weren't so permanent, and many students and teachers looked forward to seeing each other in the fall of '79.
