The sophomores participated in the Homecoming activities by constructing a float, Boot 'em to Defeat,” which won third place. Participation was shown in athletics by many talented sophomores as they earned starting positions on the Pioneer basketball and football teams which they proved themselves worthy of throughout the year. The Pioneers were also backed by those spirited sophomores who were cheerleaders and members of Pep Club. Excellent leadership for the sophomore class was provided through the Student Council representatives, through the Fort Teen Board members, and through the guidance shown by the ambitious sophomore class officers. Interest was shown in music through participation in band, choir, and orchestra. Many students were members of the Otoean staff and took part in the All School Play. Other events which sophomores entered were the Optimist Essay Contest and various speech contests. 14 L. Bassingcr D. Beaumont S. Becker A. Bennett L. Berner S. Berry J. Boncbrake M. Boucher S. Not faced with the confusion of being sophomores or the finality linked with being seniors, but with energy and enthusiasm; the class of “70” made history. Under the leadership and guidance of the class officers, the Fort Teen Board representatives, the Student Council members, and the class sponsors, the junior class enjoyed another successful year. By taking part in the Homecoming activities, for the second year in a row the juniors received first place in the float competition. The theme of their winning float was “Cage the Cards.” All through the 68-69 school year the juniors showed outstanding ability in many areas. A candy sale was proven to be a very successful way of adding to the junior treasury. The juniors showed their acting ability by taking part in the All School Play, “Little Women,” where three of the four leads were played by juniors. Those chosen to participate in the State Music Clinic and the Hastings Honor Band were from the junior class. Athletic ability was shown in sports with a number of juniors selected for all-conference teams. The 121 members topped off their junior year with a very successful Prom. The theme and plans for the Prom were secretly guarded, but hard work paid off in a very memorable event. The junior class looks forward to ending their years of high school with a successful senior year. 19 K. Abbott G. Berthold L. Brcidenstine D. Davis J. Fletcher k. Birkmann P. Bivens B. Boardman S. Our Governing Body After returning from a too short summer vacation, the Senior class of 1969 prepared for their final year and all of its activities at NCHS. Activities throughout the year included the building of the Senior Class Float, “Expecting a Victory ; their final attendance of the social dances, especially the Junior-Senior Prom, “Roman Holiday”; the Senior Class Play, “Rest Assured”; their trip to Kansas City, and finally graduation night. Memories from these events will remain in the minds and hearts of every Senior in the class of '69 for years to come. The last year met one of the many goals accomplished for the Seniors. Upon graduation, they will be going to college or to the world of work. Therefore, the future holds many more goals for which these alumni will be reaching and contributing a part of themselves. “Although the last, not the least.” Shakespeare We re Expecting a Victory. It took a lot of hard work to perfect their music, but the determination was paid back with the satisfaction of a job well done. The Choir performed at many different functions for the school as well as the public. Some presented by the Choir were: Christmas Vespers, Spring Concert, and the Ar-xrr Lodge Concert, The Choir also participated in the Peru-Hastings Honor Concert and the State Music Clinic. Hastings Honor Concert representatives were Dcb-oie Whitten and Roger Bruns. The representatives for State Clinic were Tom Berger, Roger Bruns, Debbie Whitten, and Jane Brown. The traditional project of the Choir has been to sell pure chocolate bars, and this year was no exception. With the profits made by the energetic sellers, the Choir purchased their own tape recorder. The year was highlighted by a sponsored trip to Omaha to the musical, Funny Girl.” The vocal department is also composed of several small groups. This was the first year that school had been dismissed for the entire day—giving everyone plenty of time to take care of those last minute details. Joan Monaghan brought some of the glowing stars from the beautiful evening sky inside the N.C.H.S. gym. when she was crowned the 1969 F.F.A. Sweetheart. Joan, a junior at N.C.H.S. is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Monaghan. She is a member of Pep Club and various other organizations at the high school. A petite and vivacious young lady, Joan has lived on an Iowa farm all her life, thus being a well deserving choice for the F.F.A. boys honor. Joan, selected by the boys as their sweetheart, will reign over their banquet and various other activities throughout the 1969-70 year. Mary Wolfe, the 1968 Sweetheart was presented with a corsage by John Crook, the past president of F.F.A. in remembrance of her reign. The rhythm, provided by the Blue Lights combo, set the pace for the evening's dancers. The Junior Class, under the supervision of Mr. Lockhart, outdid themselves when it came to the banquet favors, small brandy snifters imprinted with a decal boasting “Jr.-Sr. Prom 1969”. Inside the dance, towering replicas of marble pillars along with graceful wrought iron love seats and bird baths created a mood ot elegance for the delighted dancers. A great deal of thanks goes to the Booster Club who got some Nebraska City businessmen to support the team. The Pioneers' fair season could be called a result of the boys seeing not just a few buy many people at the game showing their support. Coach Clark and his staff will be looking forward to the 1969 gridiron when eight of this season's starters will be back to do their best to put the Pioneers back on top in the Ak-Sar-Ben and Twin Rivers Conferences. It is a musty smelling locker room—the heaviness of a Pioneers gang up on foe. perspiration soaked undershirt. It is the agony of play- ing with an injury, or, much worse, it is the agony of defeat. It is the beauty of a great broken field run— frustration of missing the winning field goal or dropping a touchdown pass. It is the taste of blood running from a split lip or a broken nose. It is the tenseness and nervousness of the pre-game wait in the locker room. It is the satisfaction of beating your opponent, not by simply outscoring him but by outplaying him. Football is desire, discipline, drive, it is indeed much more than a game. Starner readies for collision 94 Pioneer defense determined to stop Papio. They are Bob Barton, Marc Copcn-haver, Gary Criger, Allan Ruffner, and Kurt Schreiner. There will be 4 juniors and 3 sophomores returning from the varsity team and many others from the reserve team. The Pioneers' future looks bright for the year 1969-70. The Pioneers played spasmodically all this year with the real highlight coming in the District Tournament when they faced Pope Paul VI. This was a well-tought game with both teams exchanging the lead many times. The Pioneers unfortunately came out on the short end in an overtime. This was a heartbreak for the team who fought very hard for this win. Boys participating in the athletic department made a successful showing of their abilities by bringing home numerous victories. These boys were supported by the Pep Club and the cheerleaders, who attended a cheerleading clinic in the Kansas City area during the school year. The music department showed their talents through the concerts of the Junior High A and B Bands, Stage Band, and Mini-Band. The freshman chorus was by no means idle. Throughout the year, they were seen in three outstanding performances. Organizations, as the young FHA and FFA, made their debut during the school year. For example, FHA was awarded first prize at the annual Fun Night festival. During the year, FFA took field trips and participated in the readiment of the FFA Banquet and the FFA Sweetheart Dance. Student Council was not to be cut short of the activities this year. During the year they participated in a magazine drive which resulted in a grand profit of $725.
