Seniors Returning to high school for the final time after a summer vacation that was too short, the Class of 1968 busied themselves with manyactivities. One of the main events for the seniors was the class play, Arsenic and Old Lace. After this, they planned the trip of the year. On May 20 the class members left for Denver, Colorado, to visit the U. S. Mint and to observe the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado. During the year the seniors wondered about important things: Can NCHS get along without me?” Will my friends miss me? Where will I go to college?” Will I be able to stay in trade school? Will I select the right occupation?” “How long after graduation before the draft catches me?” Baccalaureate and graduation came into focus fast as seniors looked into the hazy and dim future. Juniors Mr. Drake, Mrs. Winklehake, Sponsors. The class of “69” accredited itself with numerous academic and extracurricular achievements during its Junior year. The largest class, consisting of one hundred and forty-one members, placed well this year in the honor roll ratings. The Juniors did outstanding jobs in the athletic de-parment as well as in speech and music. The hard work at many moneymaking projects and the ingenuity of the Junior class led to the creation of the Junior-Senior Prom. The creation of the 1968 Prom theme, “Follow the Yellow Brick Road,” was a very wise choice of the Juniors as the Prom and the Banquet turned out to be a huge success. C. Abbott P. Abbott S. Sophomores The class of “70” is quite a class. As Sophomores they started the 67-68 school year out by winning first prize in the homecoming float competition. This showed them superior in artistic skill and ingenuity. Throughout the year Sophomores excelled in many things. Little was left to be desired from the 119 members. A few examples of each may be mentioned. In sports the Sophomores received many starting and honorary positions which they proved them selves worthy of. Leadership was shown through representatives on Student Council, Fort Teen Board, and class officers. Intelligence was shown during the Optimist Essay Contest where they placed king, prince, and in the top ten. Musical ability was especially noticeable in band, as well as choir and orchestra, where many had top chairs. Literary ability was shown by their fine work on the Otoean. Spirit was shown by participation of Sophomores in many school activities, and support of the school teams. The class of “70” did a lot in their Sophomore year and will go on to bigger and better things. D. Ottsen, Treas.; P. Dickey, Sec.; J. Fisher, V.-Pres.; G. Lacy, Pres. 36 K. Abbott K. Ackley H. Everyday during third period Miss Rhoades and the staff worked diligently to compile an acceptable yearbook. Always an individual could be found pounding a typewriter when typing copy, laying out the pages for the next section, or discussing editorial problems. The head of each section was responsible for their own pages; due to the coordination within each section, the Pioneer was edited for publication. Photographers: B. Dlerking and M. Hatten. Row 1: J. A stage set, lighting, greasy make-up, a script and many hours of hard work are the ingredients that go together to make up the group of students belonging to the National Thespians Troup 900 at NCHS. As a result of the many long hours of work, the old members were able to initiate two new groups of students who had met the qualifications for membership. Devoted Thespian members display their banner. The defense pleads for his client. 46 On November 16 and 17 the curtain was raised on the stage which set the scene for the trial of Karen Andre. The extraordinary characteristics of the play was the unusual way in which the verdict was decided. As Karen Andre stood trial for the murder of Bjourn Faulkner, members of the audience were selected for jury duty and determined the verdict for the All-School Play. Curtains up, light the lights, and suddenly there appeared two very sweet old ladies who could not stand to see people who suffer from illness. As a result, the two Brewster Sisters with the help of their lunatic brother, Teddy, were able to put twelve sickly people out of their misery. Juniors Host Seniors The juniors hosted the seniors in the annual Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet under the theme of “Follow the Yellow Brick Road.” The Land of Oz was realistically recreated throughout the evening’s festivities. The banquet was held at Steinhart Lodge where miniature replicas of yellow brick roads leading to Emerald City castles were the table decorations. Music was provided by the “Contemporaries,’’ a group composed of Larry Starner, Ralph Budd, Jack Armstrong, Terry Braye, V'erle Miller, John Teten, Mr. Terry Zuelow, and singer Cathy Horn. The Grand March headed by junior class president Ralph Budd, and his date Roxanne Wurtele; and Yerle Miller, senior class president, and his date Jill Eads led everyone into the land of enchantment. Stepping through the witch’s house and onto the yellow brick road we beheld the glistening Emerald City above the clouds. The monkey men flying across the crepe paper sky with tin men and munchkins dancing on the walls made up parts of the decorative scheme. In accordance with tradition the sophomore boys served at the punch tables, while the Jades, a combo from Lincoln, provided the music. The class of 1969 owed the success of the banquet and the prom to the cooperation of the class members in their various committees, and the assistance of the junior class sponsors, Mrs. Verner Winkelhake and Mr. Keith Drake. 75 We could have danced all night. Cuddle up a little closer! Ahhhh! Class presidents and their dates. Would you look at THAT! 77 1 Mary Reigns Over FFA Mary Wolfe was selected as the 1968 FFA Sweetheart Queen to succeed Judy Johnson, the 1967 Sweetheart at the annual FFA dance on May 17. The newly elected FFA President John C rook presented Mary with a heart-shaped locket and a traditional white FFA jacket. Mary will reign over the NCHS Future Farmers of America for the school year, 1968-1969. This year, as each year, the FFA boys nominated six candidates from the junior class. The other five candidates this year were Cathy Horn, Rennie Metcalf, Anne Morton, Susan Roth, and Cindy Vondrak. The Sweetheart was then chosen by couples who attended the dance in the gymnasium. This year the live music was featured by the Brand X, a combo from Omaha. 78 S. Roth C. Horn C. Vondrak R. Metcalf R. Metcalf, J. Miyoshi, C. Vondrak, D. Shallenberger, J. Johnson, M. Wolfe, J. The record does not correctly represent the quality of players the team had. The team lost a large number of close games. The Ak-Sar-Ben Tournament was the high-point of the season. The team played spasmodically throughout the four-day tournament, knocking off the second and third seeded teams and ending with fourth place out of twelve. 9' The 1967-1968 Score Box and Statistics of All-Stars NC 69 Cathedral 57 NC 36 Pius X 60 NC 43 Crete 83 NC 54 Falls City 56 NC 42 Syracuse 62 NC 40 Blair 59 NC 49 Papillion 46 NC 46 Waverly 45 NC 53 Syracuse 80 NC 42 Blair 63 NC 89 Ashland 66 NC 66 Auburn 67 NC 55 Lincoln East 68 NC 64 Fairbury 69 NC 54 Ralston 62 NC 51 Papillion 73 NC 68 Falls City 58 NC 57 Waverly 60 NC 72 Plattsmouth 79 NC 54 Plattsmouth 3 NC 40 Waverly 61 Average Players % Shots °!o Free Throws °h Rebounds Total Points 17.4 Golden 44.2 55.1 16.1 362 6.5 Denniston 29.8 64.4 4.6 137 5.7 Williams 29.7 56.0 5.8 191 3.4 Snodderly 25.7 63. 0 6.5 67 6. 0 T. Again as in the preceding year the Pioneers won the Twin Rivers in a sudden death play-off with Platts-mouth. After winning duals and area championships, the district pressure was too much for the highly rated Pioneers. Jim Brockhaus coached the golf members who were Terry Braye, Bobb Logan, Marc Copenhaver, Gary Teel Lynn Denniston, Jim Wurtele, Joe Fitze-kam, Keith Majors, and Mike Wurtele. 101 Faculty Mr. B. A. Eddy Principal During the 1967-1968 school year, the Junior High participated in many extra-curricular and academic activities under the supervision of Mr. B. A. Eddy, principal. Students entered in the Junior Division of the American Legion Auxiliary Essay Contest, the Greater Nebraska Science Fair, and music contests. Several students participated in spelling contests; therefore, one student went to state. Organizations as FFA, FHA, Art Club, Honor Band, A and B Band were prominent in Junior High. Many of the girls were active in Girls Intramurals which were held after school under the direction of Miss Mary Ellen Slack. The members played against each other in such activities as bowling and archery. Athletically the Junior High boys had a highly successful year in football, basketball, track, and wrestling. Cor sequently, the Freshmen are anticipating a very competitive year of sports in 1968-1969. Row 1: Mr. Jenkins, Mrs. Ball, Mr. Ostransky, Mrs. Gilman, Mr. Kernes, Mr. Eddy.
