OFFICE PERSONNEL Mrs. Martin Phones ringing, voices humming, typewriters clicking—these are the sounds of the NCHS office. The office staff has the multiple job of handling money and attendance, typing forms, giving announcements, and keeping the coffee pot going in the faculty lounge. One of the most difficult jobs is answering the many questions asked by students, teachers, parents, and the public. Mrs. Hayes Sorry, you have a bad case of. . . Hard at work ? ? ? SCHOOL NURSES The nurse's office is constantly buzzing with students who are ill and many who just hope they are. The well-being of the students is assured by the nurse who checks their health and is on hand for all emergencies. Her daily duty is to visit the schools and take the ill students home. Mrs. Wademan Mrs. Fenstermacher 7 ENGLISH Mr. Kettlehut Mrs. Berger English is one of the more important subjects in our education. Literature, composition, and the English language are the basis of almost all other fields. The sophomore courses deal with speech, rhetoric of sentence and paragraph structure, mythology, and a little literature. American literature, phonemics, and advanced study of rhetoric keep the juniors on their toes. Thanks to the remarkable William Shakespeare, the seniors study tragedies, epics, and novels. Everyone tries to gain a bunch of knowledge. Educational television also assists some of the classes. As I was saying . . . 8 Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum. Where's my bottle of coke? MATH AND SCIENCE The science and math departments are the essential parts of our space age world. These classes aid students in solving the problems of today and tomorrow and encourages further endeavors. Three years of science are available to our students, however, only one year is required. Biology, natural science, chemistry, physics, and physical science are the available courses. Courses available in the math department are first and second year algebra, geometry, and math analysis for seniors. F Mrs. Ott Mr. McGaffey Math class ? ? ? ? ? Mr. Holllway Mr. Majors There she (?) bubbles! Sure It's a frog!! HISTORY Mr. Hayes Mr. Barton Mr. Francis Is everyone enjoying themselves? The Nebraska City High School requires a two and one-half year study of the past and present. The sophomores at NCHS study world history which is a study of civilization from the beginning of time to the present day international problems. American history keeps the juniors busy studying the economic, social, and political, as well as the historical aspects of America. The class of '67, meanwhile, are hard at work with a semester of American government and a semester of modern problems. The world of tomorrow will be molded by the students of today. Anyone camera shy ? ? Excited young minds ? ? MUSIC AND ART Mr. Jenkins Miss Peterson Mrs. Loofe Developing harmony is the essential aim of the music department. Band and choir members strive for pleasing tones and good quality. These organizations provide their members with a chance to round their personalities and to cooperate with others. Art is a popular field which offers its students a sense of balance. Art gives interested students a chance to work creatively and experiment with various mediums. Everything is smiles ? ? She is always helping. Cut the mustard !! GUIDANCE AND LIBRARY Mrs. McGaffey NCHS students find their unusually beautiful and finely equipped library a successful means for broadening their education by reading information and entertaining books and periodicals. Every NCHS student plans his own future with the helping hand of our guidance director. Subjects and activities are coordinated to fit everyone's needs. In addition, the director is faced with the tasks of planning different scholastic tests and the annual Career Conference. Miss Gunlach Now whose coming? Let's keep working. PHYSICAL EDUCATION An exquisite physique to go with our extraordinary minds is the goal of the PE department. Boy's and girl's physical education is required for all sophomores. Here students improve their physical ability while learning the importance of sportsmanship and fair play. Girls enjoy a variety of sports including volleyball, basketball, and deck tennis, as well as bowling, tennis, roller skating, and archery. For boys there are basketball, table tennis, and gymnastics. 13 Help !!! We want two !! VOCATIONAL AND BUSINESS EDUCATION Mr. Abernathy Mr. Clark Mrs. Daffer Mr. Feuerbacher Mr. Evans Miss Mathers Careful !!! Mr. Sorenson Mr. Williams Non college bound students have a variety of vocational courses to choose from at NCHS. Agriculture is the basis of our mid-western economy. A four year course is offered for our Future Farmers of America. Metal shop, wood shop, advanced shop, plus mechanical drawing are courses offered to the mechanically minded students at NCHS. The home is the backbone of our country and for NCHS girls there are a variety of homemaking courses available. For the business bound students typing, office courses, bookkeeping, business English and law, plus shorthand are offered. 14 COOKS AND CUSTODIANS y Mr. Renken Mr. Hillman Mr. Lewis Mr. O'Flaherty Fixing a healthy, balanced meal every day of the school year is tough, but the cooks at NCHS do an admirable job of trying to please everyone and yet give them what they need. Just as tough is the job of the custodians who, despite those who make their job tougher, keep a good disposition while keeping our school presentable. Although they get bugged and teased a lot, it's all in fun, and we truly appreciate all the work they do at NCHS. 15 Faithful, isn't he ? CLASSES Happiness is Being A Senior CAROL ABBOTT Fr. The Class of '68, consisting of 118 students, were busy all year raising money for their class, planning for, and executing the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet. It was a great success, and a prom to be remembered by all who attended. The theme this year was Mardi Gras set to the beat of the Palesaides from Beatrice. The money-making projects by the Juniors this year were the annual candy sales and the annual magazine sales, which grossed together a total of more than $1800. A revolutionary new style of class ring was introduced at NCHS this year when the Juniors ordered the latest round style ring. They were delivered by Josten's last September 22. The Junior Class was sponsored by Evelyn Winkelhake, Robert Evans, John Barton, and Helen Mathers. They all played an important part in organizing projects, assisting, and encouraging the students of the Class of '68. The Junior Class Student Council representatives for 1966-67 were; Terry Braye, Jill Eads, Judy Metcalf, Lois Russell, and Barbara Wurtle. 41 SOPHOMORES Clarence Abbott Patty Abbott Leroy Anfenkamp John Balfour James Baltensperger Deldene Bargenquest Robert Barton Debby Baur Charles Beers Nora Billingsley Larry Boardman Ray Bohl Gar ' Bond Alan Bonebrake Alan Boyer Patricia Bremer Ryan Briley Frank Brown Ralph Budd Earl Chemberlain Linda Cody Judy Collins Sandra Adkins Jack Armstrong Larry Arthur Darlene Connolly Charlene Conney John Crook Teddy Davis Mary Jo Deras Linda Draine John Duncan Vicki Eaton Debbie Eloge Ardith Ervin Sandy Esser Walter Fitzekem Larry Fletcher Kenneth Follet Steve Frede Wes Fritschle Herman Gawart Wanda Gillespie Luther Givehand Margaret Glover Warner Glur Charles Gray Georgene Copenhaver Marc Copenhaver Gary Criger 43 Debby Hartman Roger Hartman Gary Harvey Barbara Hauptman Jean Hauptman Tom Headly Carol Henner Myron Henner Gayle Herold Marcia Hespen Jack Hobble Pat Hodges Bonnie Hollmann Cathy Horn Steve Housh Jack Hughes Connie Irvin Lynn Jay Jerry Johnson Bob Kendall 44 Mark Lett Debra Lowther Jo Ellen Mason Vicki McCallum Paul McDaniel Dree McGinnis Rennie Metcalf Elizabeth Miller John Miyoshi Anne Morton Carla Mosier Kathy Murray Garry Myers Ron Nee man Jackie Nelson Mary Obbink Beverly Paben Virginia Parrott Kurt Poggemeyer Steve Pummel 45 Diane Roos Joe Ross Susan Roth Shalleen Rowen Dorothy Ruby Allan Ruffner Mark Schneider Jill Schreiner Kurt Schreiner Gerald Severs Frances Shafer Susan Shallenberger Linda Sheib Marlene Snodgrass Tim Snyder Roger Stanley Larry Starner John Steddly Wayne Steiner Deborah Stoll 46 Alan Yiox Cindy Vondrak Dave Waring Debbie Weatherfield Tom Weddle Janice Weston Patti Whipple Michael Wieckhorst Roma Wieckhorst John Williams Pam Williams Mary Wolfe Alan Wurtele Candy Wurtele James Wurtele Roxanne Wurtele Katy Yost 47 The Sophomore class of '67 were led through the trying year by Jim Wurtele, President; Cindy Vondrak, Secretary; Susan Roth, Vice President; Anne Morton, Treasurer. That's the SENIOR battle-cry means another victory. The 1966-67 Pep Club led school spirit and enthusiasm throughout the season, following our teams in victory or defeat. New uniforms added extra brightness and color to the Pep Club section this season. The sweaters were round neck pullovers with a gold V accenting the front. Within the V was a gold P , a switch from the traditional NC used for many years. The skirts which had a more pronounced A-line this year were made by each girl from bonded purple fabric. Officers for the 1966-67 school year were: President, Carol Abbott; Vice-President, Jill Eads; Secretary, Linda Stoll; and Treasurer, Jackie Pummel. Some of the major projects of the Pep Club were: sponsored buses to the out of town games, decorating the halls with signs, selling concessions at games, and serving the Athletic Banquet. They also decorated the armory and throne for Homecoming. Mrs. Carol Daffer and Mrs. Audrey Fetty sponsored the Pep Club this year. 78 Pep Club cheering the team to victory!!! Dianne Copenhaver was crowned 1966 Homecoming Queen by Student Council President Kirby Eltiste under the shelter of an umbrella. Most of the traditional Homecoming ceremonies were cancelled due to a fall rain storm. The queen's attendants were Sharon Deaver, Nancy Golden, Chris Metcalf, Jackie Pummel, Mindy Sackles, and Kristy Wurtele. Strong winds and driving rain provided problems of buckling umbrellas, ruined hair-dos, and soaked clothes. The Pioneer loss of 39-7 to Beatrice also dampened the 1966 Homecoming. The Pride of the Pioneers band, appearing in their new uniforms, was forced to leave before halftime. The band did present pre-game entertainment, however. The Homecoming Dance was held at the National Guard Armory. TheQueenand her attendants were escorted by the Senior football players and were given football necklaces. Queen Dianne was later presented an autographed football by the team. Music was provided by the Impacts. The Student Council was in charge of the dance. 83 Former Homecoming Queens, Diann Eltiste and Carol Peters, congratulate Queen Dianne. The Pride of the Pioneers band led the traditional Homecoming Parade to start the festivities at Pioneer High. The Homecoming theme of Spirit is . . was carried out in the many floats representing the classes and numerous organizations. Prizes for the winning floats were: first, Sophomore float--Skunking the Orangemen ; second. Choir float— Slicing the Orangemen ; and third, SENIOR float-- Crating the Orangemen . The National Honor Society was in charge of the parade. Umbrellas, wet clothes, stringy hair, congratultions, and happy tears were a part of the confusion. The Great Senior Class once again blazes a trail down Main Street in the 1967 Homecoming Parade. Skunk the Orangemen was the theme of the first place prize given to the Sophomores.
