Losing to Papio in the first round of the Aksarben Tournament, the Pioneers were never in the game and Papio could do nothing wrong. It was an easy victory for Papio, who went on to win the tournament. The Pioneers however got revenge later in the season by downing the same Papio team in an exceptional contest played on the losers' floor. The Twin Rivers Tournament, was the same old story. In the first round, the Pioneers squeaked by Plattsmouth, but in the final game lost to Fairbury by two points. The Fairbury game saw the Smithmen do everything wrong, while Fairbury threw everything at us except the cheerleaders. In district play, Nebraska City drew a tall Hastings team. Their height, along with the Pioneers'poor playing, made victory a lot easier for the Tigers. The Pioneers might not be exceptional in tournament play, but they compiled a record any team would be proud to have. A1 gets advice from Coach Smith Basket! Reserves Back Row: S. Orange putts for par. The Pioneer golf team had an unsuccessful season in 1966. Only 7 boys went out for the sport this year. The Pioneers were in an unpleasant position due to the loss of several key players through graduation last year. Although the Pioneers were inexperienced this year, they should prove to be very strong in the next two years. The Pioneers, turning in poor showings in both the Aksarben and Twin Rivers Tournaments, had very keen competition. In the District meet the Pioneers again made a poor showing. The Citians took last place well behind a number of fine Lincoln teams. Although the Pioneers were on a losing streak all year long, we want to thank them for trying and keeping the sport alive at NCHS. 89 Joy concentrates on Snodderly's form. The Junior class, consisting of 132 students started the year by electing Rick Budd, President; Kirby Eltiste, Vice-President; Julie Ray, Secretary; and Doug Denny, Treasurer. Representing the class in Student Council were Linnea Beason, Kirby Eltiste, Chris Metcalf, Julie Ray, and Kathy Tonsing. The Fort Teen Youth Council representatives were Pam Hauptman and Bob Shrewsbury. The Junior sponsors were Evelyn Winkelhake, John Barton, Carol Biere, and Robert Evans. This year was a busy one for the Juniors, as they worked hard to make money for their Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet. The Prom was again held in the school gymnasium, and was well decorated to the theme of Dutch Polonaize . The Junior projects include their candy sale, which amounted to about $200, and their annual magazine sale, which amounted to $1800. The Junior class rings, which were ordered in the Sophomore year, were delivered by Josten's in October. Juniors work hard on candy sale. Roger Killion, William Abernathy, Harvey Bettenhausen, and Doris McGaffey were class sponsors. The Seniors had four student council representatives: Suzanne Slemp, Steve Webering, Bill Rakes, and Ron Thorne plus National Honor Society Members. The class had many money making projects such as a slave auction, leaf rake, picking up corn, bake sales and rummage sale. They also sold ribbons, badges, and beanies. Their goal was to make enough money for a trip to Chicago. Baccalaureate was May 22 at 7:30 in the gymnasium. Rev. Samuel Hofer was the speaker. The Seniors left for Chicago that night and returned the following Thursday. Finally the day all Seniors waited for arrived. May 27 at 8:00 p.m. the Seniors marched into the gym for the final ceremony of their high school years. Many memories, tears, and experiences now lie behind them and they are now alumni.
