Ma Barta was graduated from Wayne High School and Wayne State Teacher's College. She taught and was Superintendent of Dunbar Schools. She married Jim Barta and during World War II, she returned to the teaching profession after rearing twin daughters . Mrs. Barta came to the N.C.H.S. School system in January of 1946. She became Otoean adviser in January of 1947, and in 1948 produced the first Pioneer annual. She has been active in her community as well as the state. She was elected President of the State High School Press Association in 1954. She is still active in D.A.R., Methodist Church, and Ladies Lionettes . We of the Pioneer staff on behalf of the faculty and student body would like to say Congratulations and thanks for your sincere devotion! 3 U Rje  te wW . Busy! We're always Busy! No matter what course our future life takes, we will always remember the many fine courses offered us at N. C. H. S. that gave us our start. Of course without the indespensible office staff the wheels of learning would soon be hopelessly jammed. The capable services of the Superintendent and Principals'office keep the machinery of learning running smoothly. Every student spends a good share of his school life involved in research work and finds the assistance of the librarian of invaluable help. The health and well-being of the students are essential. The school nurse annually checks the health of all students and is on hand for emergencies. IA QolicL Itv Engfok Florence Barta Now somebody really goofed on this thematic! Audrey Fetty English is a vital part of the education of every student. Well polished reading, writing, and spelling skills form the basis of almost all other fields of study. Freshmen courses are designed to add to the students' composition and reading skills. Speech and journalism plus English fundamentals add spice to Sophomore courses. Juniors are kept busy rediscovering America in American Literature and Seniors learn more about their own language from English Literature. Two years of French are also available. Noel Schoenrock How in the world did they pronounce that word??? Evelyn Winkelhake 8 fjjoih Qm L lAhtds QM L Paul Holliway A basic understanding of science and math are important in today's space age world. The ability to understand the why of an equation or experiment may enable the student to solve some of the many problems he meets in other endeavors. Freshmen receive an introduction in general science. Beyond ninth grade one more year of science is required and for the more scientific-minded, three years are available. These subjects include biology and natural science, chemistry, physics, and physical science. Math courses available include Freshman math, algebra, general math, math essentials, geometry, advanced algebra, and trigonometry. Hey!1 I discovered how to draw a round circle. We learn to type with Mr. Norton. Carol Biere Jeanne Blatchford NCHS sees the need of comprehensive vocational and business courses as a sound foothold on the ladder of success. Non college-bound students all have a variety of courses to choose from to give them a start in the right direction. Agriculture is the basis of our Midwestern economy. A complete four years vocational course is provided for our Future Farmers of America. Metal shop, wood shop, advanced shop, plus mechanical drawing are industrial arts courses designed for the mechanically minded. The home is the backbone of our country and for NCHS girls there is a complete homemaking course a-vailable. Wm. Abernathy Jolene Eggen I guess 1 turned that corner too short—that pole shouldn't be there anyway. Wal Pant 0j Qu x%s$ljut C xnmo Kenneth Clark Bill Hudson The world of business is ever increasing. To meet this need our school offers courses in Typing I and II, shorthand, and bookkeeping. No matter what field the student plans to enter, he finds drivers' education an extremely practical and valuable course for his own safety and that of those around him. Distributive Education offers a part-time educational training program which will enable students to gain valuable work experience plus closely related classroom instruction . Severin Sorensen Gary Randles ally taking part in it. 11 Ag tools are always kept neat and in the right place. Operating this machine isn't hard once you know just how to do it. Boys' and girls' physical education is required for all freshmen. Here students learn the importance of fairplay and good sportsmanship. Girls' enjoy a variety of sports including volleyball, basketball, and deck tennis , as well as bowling, tennis , skating, and archery. For boys there are basketball, baseball, and gymnastics. Hey. Ca, 1066, 1492, 1776 Edward Ellis Micheal Murphy The happenings of the past and the people around us all help to mold the world in which we live. To help the students understanding of this important subject, NCHS requires a three and a half year study of history. A semester of world geography is a must for freshmen. Sophomores study the shaping of culture in either civics or ancient history, and for Seniors the timely study of modern problems. 13 Whether we use paper, wood, clay or plaster, we are required to have a project. Even though the wasps chase us out of our room, we still have class in the hall. All this research is a lot of work, but memorizing it is even harder. Many early rising students participate in the very popular band and choir activities as well as small group and solo work. Orchestra for stringed instruments rounds out the musical picture. Art is another activity which gives the student the chance to work creatively and experiment with various mediums. What we don't go through! ! That's how most students would find themselves without the helping hand of the guidance of the Guidance Office. Whether after high school plans include college, a vocation, or marriage, guidance counseling gives the student invaluable help and information. Putu Ub Doris McGaffey Robert Norton Hey! Do you think these colors will look alright for our Christmas door decoration? The guidance office also administers many tests which help reveal the students knowledge and potential. These tests include SCAT, the Kuder Inventory, National Merit Exams, PSAT, ITED, and many others. The guidance office is also responsible for the Conference on Careers and Training Opportunities in Cooperation with the Student Council. Now are you sure that you would like to carry that many courses? 15 To prepare for the future we take long and hard tests. AJpj . . It is Spring, 1964, a beginning and an ending. For some it is the threshold of a whole new way of life, for others it's another summer vacation with the bright prospect of a new high school facility in the fall. It is an ending, too--the end of an era for the school where we've worked and studied, laughed and, perhaps, cried. Too the Class of 1964 and the hundreds of other alumni who have passed this way before us Nebraska City High School will always be a red building on Ninth Street. Each of us leaves something of himself here--joys, perhaps, or pain or dreams. Each takes a small portion of the school with him. For the Class of 64 the most vivid memories will be of the Senior year. There are many happy memories. It was the year Beatlemania and four shaggy--haired Englishmen wrought havoc throughout the nation. It was a year of hair worn in a flip, monstrous mohair sweaters, and A skirts, or elephant and grape jokes, of dial phones in Nebraska City. Seniors suffered weekly exhaustion from 6:30 A.M. Breakfast Club and recovered in the gay pandemoneum of Senior Home Room. Hilarity reigned on Casual Day when a teacher in pig tails, sweatshirt, and tennis shoes could be seen teaching a class on world politics. All these memories and so many more, major events and minor ones, will compose for the Class of 64 one last wonderful, Year to remember . Farewell! The following staff and Florence Barta hope that this 1964 Pioneer will bring you many hours of pleasure as you recall all the achievements made at N. C. H. S. through the past year.
