Future Teachers of America is an organization for students interested in making a career of teaching. F.T.A. began their year with 53 members. It was founded in honor of Margaret Martin, the first teacher in Nebraska City. During the course of the year the members practiced teaching at various elementary schools in Nebraska City and observed many classrooms in session. On December 2, a group attended a Delta Kappa Gamma Tea at Syracuse, Nebraska. All seniors having perfect attendance received an F.T.A. pin at a banquet sponsored by the National Education Association held in May. Miss Jeanne Blatchford the sponsor of the group. They met every morning from 8:00-9:00 hoping to aid students in learning the art of being future businessmen. The group attended the State D. E. Convention and conducted an installation of officers as well as enjoying several parties throughout the year. Mrs. Martin and Mrs. McGaffey are co-sponsors of Service Club. All girls who help in the school offices and high school library are eligible for membership in the Service Club. Girls helping in the Junior High, Senior High, and Guidance offices during their free periods gain experience in office procedures and provide needed help in handling routine clerical work. Student librarians are responsible for checking out magazines and reference materials in the study hall. Certificates of Recognition are awarded at Honors Convocation each year. The Service Club Christmas Tea held each year has become an enjoyable event each member looks forward to during the holiday season. Mrs. Neal Martin and Mrs. Don McGaffey are the sponsors of the organization. School librarians check out reading material to students during study halls. 29
