They are new every morning. Great is Thy faithfulness. ’”’ For twenty-five years God has shown Himself faithful to those who first saw the vision for a Christian High School in Central Nebraska. A look at the campus shows His faithfulness in finances. A look at the men and women He has led to minister here shows His faithfulness in raising up workers for His field. But to see the greatest area of His faithfulness, one must look at the students who’ve come here — students who have learned what it means to walk with a faithful God. This lesson in their lives, and their living it out and passing it on to others will last far beyond the last time they drive away from the NC campus. We don’t _ procrastinate (sounds good anyway) but it’s either this year or never because next year we'll be big Seniors and we won’t have another chance. I mean, after all we’re only Juniors once (Hopefully!) So far this year has been a challenge. The homework is a lot harder and when you’re also in sports, choir, the athletic club, yearbook staff, and all those other fun things you’re really pressured for time, but we can handle it. Right?!? A lot of Juniors are varsity football, volleyball and basketball players. We have alot of talent that we could develop if we got around to it. We do have plenty of responsibilities this year. We have to run the candy store after school and during games and clean up afterwards, and keep the pop machines filled, (Doesn’t that sound like fun?), plus money-raising projects. By the way do you want to buy a magazine?!?! The responsibilities remind us of how responsible we are for handling the gift of this school that God raised for us twenty-five years ago. He remembers that the work was tougher here, but the teachers Barbara Kaltenbach - were all helpful, and he ended up oe a learning a lot. We've even amazed some of the teachers with the maturity we’ve gained during the summer, and throughout the year. Most of the Sophomores are involved in several activities or sports, and the class has made contributions to NC in a lot of ways, as we set and met new goals academically, athletically, and spiritually. Sure, there were tough times as we grew together, but the good times outweighed the bad, and we look forward to two more good years together. Judy Grantham Taylor, a Sophomore when the school first began, writes and shares some of her memories of her first year here: “‘The faculty and staff of twelve and the student body of forty became a close knit group who enjoyed excellent classes, music trips, parties, missionary conference, dorm life, Gospel teams, making of a weekly radio broadcast, the beginning of the athletic program, and new friendships which have lasted twenty-five years. “Being a Sophomore at NC the first year was an adventure in making history. We were desirous that our speech and action would be honoring to our Heavenly Father, our families, and the school.” Judy and Ken Taylor (also a Sophomore of the first year) farm near Aurora. We're enjoying being part of the “High School” even though we take a lot of harassing from upper classmen. We're also enjoying the new friendships we've gained and are looking forward to another great year, next year as Sophomores, a little step closer yet to the goal. Looking Back ... In the fall of 1958, Suzanne McDonald Brunken was a Freshman at NC. We interviewed her to find out just what being a Freshman twenty-five years ago was like. She said because the classes were so small they didn’t do a lot as individual classes, but as a school. Some of the activities she remembers include picking up corn, dressing up for banquets, and going to a big trackmeet out of state. Kids in all classes were treated the same. No one was really considered an “upper” or “lower”’ classman. It was like one big family. Suzanne was the only off-campus student that year, but she was included in most of the dorm activities anyhow. The rules were different than those now. Makeup and slacks weren’t allowed. There was no dating and dresses had to touch the floor when girls knelt. Suzanne now resides with her family in Clarks, Nebraska. Being a 7th grader means that you’re expected to act more mature than the elementary kids, yet you’re not old enough to participate in the high school activities. New classes such as shop and home ec. as well as involvement in organized sports are experiences most 7th graders immensely enjoy. We also went to Grace College of the Bible in Omaha for another Choral Clinic in March. It lasted a weekend. There was an evening in which we listened to a concert put on by the Grace Choir, and afterwards went to a “Pizza Splash” where you could eat all you wanted. To raise money this year, the choir sold lightbulbs to buy a new monitor speaker. Every other weekend, starting the last of February to April we went on tours to many different areas in Nebraska. This is the 25th year that Mr. Sawyer has directed the NC choir. Through the years, he has seen God’s great faithfulness in minister- ing to congregations through the music of the Choir. The Art of Communication Speech! Around school this word to many is fun and brings on an exciting challenge. This year there were three contests at which students from N.C. participated. The first one was held at Kearney in December. Twelve students from N.C. went. The day was successful for many. Many students received ribbons and medals for their efforts. Ribbon winners were: Shari Barnell, and Rod Swanson, Serious Prose. Finalists who received medals were: Darla Rowse, Informative, 6th place; Tammy Gurney, Humorous Impromptu, 6th place. The second contest of the year was held at Cozad. This contest which was held in February attracted seven students. Jane Schubert received a 3rd place medal and trophy for her creative interp. writing. The others did well but didn’t receive medals. The school speech contest was held in the last part of February. The whole school, ninth through twelveth grades, participated in the all school contest. The required participation in the contest brought many talents to surface. Two students from the seven individual events as well as one drama and one duet went on to the District Contest. Everyone benefited from their experience this year in Speech. This year in November, after many years of absence, the Academy of Arts came to N.C. and involved the whole school, 101 kids in a play. “God Meant It For Good. This play portrayed the story of Joseph, from his childhood to his brothers coming to Egypt for food. The week involved getting ready to work together and learning to follow directions. This was the second year for N.C. to participate in a court room in a mock trial. The six members: Tricia Swan, Todd Stumbo, Stephanie Ackles, John Cambell, Audrey Weed, and Steve DeNeui won the trial to prove Tricia innocent, but they didn’t receive enough points in their presentation to go on to finals. Fads in what is considered “‘fun’’ have come and gone. But the LIFE that the students have gained or strengthened here at NC — the Life of Christ within them — doesn’t ever change. To see how this LIFE carries on after graduation, we decided to check on some former students who've graduated from NC, and see how their LIFE is coming Activities Dorothy (Kasten) Cook ’60 After graduating from NC in 1960, Mrs. Cook enrolled at Grace College of the Bible. After she graduated from Grace, she married Harold Cook, another Grace graduate. After a time of training and deputation, they began in 1967 to minister to the Navajo Indians in New Mexico under the direction of Berean Mission, Inc. In 1979 the Lord burdened their hearts to provide Christian Education for their children. He brought them to NC, where their children are enrolled and Harold is employed by the school. Dorothy says, “I am thankful for the values taught to me while I was a student at NC, and am thankful that our children are being taught Christian principles.”’ along now. Norma (Keller) Smith ’60 Mrs. Warren Smith (Norma Keller) also graduated in the first graduating class of NC. She was married the following August, and the Smiths now have four children. Tammy graduated from NC in 1979, and then from Creighton University’s Pharmacy program in 1983. Todd is 20, Tonya is 11, and Teather is 9. The Smiths have lived in the Central City area all of their married lives except for two years spent in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Norma says, “I’ve always been thankful for my year spent at NC and also that Tammy was able to attend there. She just seemed to blossom in NC's environment. I hope NC stays around for another 26 years for a 50 year celebration.” When they Left Campus Rachel (Martin) Dugger Being a Christian doesn’t make a person immune to troubles. One doesn't have to look very far through the ranks to discover NO alums who’ve been through some tough times. But even in the tough things, God has shown His faithfulness through the years, bringing His children back to Himself with patience, yet often with unpleasant experiences. One example of an NC alum who’s had such experiences is Rachel Dugger. She attended NC while her Dad was on staff. Several years later she became involved in a cult. After many months of anxiety and prayers by her family and friends, including those who'd known her at NC, she was rescued, or rather taken from the cult and deprogrammed. Reunited with family and friends, and walking with the Lord, Rachel is now married and lives in Kearney, NE. Nate Schmidt ’79 Nate is one of the many recent graduates who is serving the Lord here and now as well as planning for future service. When his family moved to the Central City area in 1974, the primary reason was because Mom and Dad wanted their children to continue their Christian schooling. Nate attended NC for four years, graduating in 1979. Although he had always planned on going to college, Nate decided to invest three years in a small Bible Institute (Frontier School of the Bible) in eastern Wyoming. “It was there that I really began to appreciate the groundwork already laid at NC in Christian doctrine. The Bible classes especially provide invaluable insight into the greatest Textbook one will ever study.” Having seen the importance of God’s Word being translated into each spoken tongue, Nate is presently enrolled in a two year course on computers to further assist him in Bible translation. “I have several Christian teachers here at the community school I’m attending, and have really appreciated their interest in me as a person as well as a student. This is an asset that schools like NC possess to an even larger degree — Christian teachers that can work with students as whole persons, not just as academic protegés.” If we had time and space, there are hundreds more who have seen God’s continuing faithfulness in their lives. This is the most exciting part of the work at NC. 59 Activities Give A Cheer For Ly i Above: Varsity Cheerleaders At Left: J.V.
