LEARNING TO Teaching students to converse correctly is the major role of the English department. Improving this ability to communicate must be done by en¬ larging the vocabulary with extensive reading, in¬ telligent listening, and logical thinking. The foreign languages offered are Latin and German. Upon completing two years of either, the student is well enough acquainted with the language so that he is able to understand its basic principles. Our instructors pictured to the left are: Robert A. Harding who teaches sophomore, junior, and senior English, directs the senior class play, and sponsors the chess club; he was educated at Syracuse University A.B. and Lehigh University M.A.--J. Frederick Knecht, a junior English teacher, was educated atUniversity of Pennsylvania, B.A. and A.M., and has as extra curricular activities Blue and White Advisor and Honor Society Advisor--Mrs. Ruth McGoigle, who instructs Latin H, German I and H, advises Honor Society and the Oratorical Contest and received her A.B. from Ursinus--Floyd Schlegel, an instructor in sophomore English, vocal music and the organ, received his B.S. and M.Ed. in music from Pennsylvania State University and did his graduate work at New York University. His extra curricular activities consist of Mixed Glee Club and Mixed Ensemble--Elizabeth Sloat teaches senior English, is in charge of school publicity and instructs the college board club. She received her A.B. from Lebanon Valley Col¬ lege and M.A. from Columbia University Seated: Elizabeth Sloat and Mrs. Ruth McGonigle. Standing: Floyd Schlegel, J. OUR GUIDING LIGHT Mr. Robert Reichard and Mr. Broni Krisukus discuss outstanding guidance cases. Through our guidance department students are given the opportunity to plan college careers and future vocations. This guidance program is carried on through a series of interest tests, scholarship tests, individual interviews, and career conferences. By these various methods students are given abetter understanding of their abilities and interests. Our guidance staff consists of Robert Reichard and Broni Krisukus. Robert Reichard also ad¬ vises the Junior class and Student Council be¬ sides his duties as a guidance counselor. He graduatedfromKutztownState Teacher ' s College with a E.A. andfrom Lehigh University with a M. A. Broni Krisukus serves as Home and School Visitor. College boards are admin¬ istered to junior and senior students throughout the nation for the purpose placement of opportunity for entrance into college. Mr. Thomas Mitten advises students during College Night. 8
