H15 HOLINESS POPE P1Us XII sw, W. Rome and Rochester IT BRINGS Rome very close to Rochester to see our new Pope Pius XII pictured here with our own Bishop Kearney. It establishes a very personal link between us when we see the Bishop of Rome walking side by side with the Bishop of Rochester. Formerly, a Pope seemed far off, distant, one we revered and loved and honored, but still one remote. Now, when we hear Pope Pius XII over the radio we can feel the closeness of Rome and Roch- ester, each presided over by a Bishop whose lives have many similarities. Our Holy Father is a Roman chosen for Rome, Bishop Kearney, a New Yorker, has come back to his native New York State as Bishop of our city. Pope Pius XII was a professor at Roman Seminary in his earlier years, Bishop Kearney taught at Cathedral College. 'vit I2 235 Mosr REVIEREND IAMES KEARNEY, D. D

Both Bishops stand on common ground in questions of individual human freedom and abhorrence of race prejudice. Each has a whole-hearted interest in youth problems. Wfhen the new Pope visited America as Cardinal Pacelli in 1936, he led a busy life of contact with Americans. He made an airplane tour of the country, meeting more than a hundred of our American bishops. He was guest at Hyde Park on the day after President Roose- velt's re-election. He was the guest of the Catholic University of America and of Ford- ham and Notre Dame Universities. We, Rochesterians, know full well what a busy life our Bishop leads. How Nazareth should like to have had the privilege accorded to West Philadelphia Catholic High in 1936 where His Eminence Pope Pius XII was tendered a special program! Rome comes to West Catholic, -the caption in their 1937 Gleam', tells how much it meant to them. But then, too, Rome and Rochester met,-Cardinal Pacelli now Bishop of Rome, Bishop Kearney then of Salt Lake, Utah, now of Roch- ester, New York. It is fitting that in a book dedicated to the Angels of Peace he whose first wish as Pope was Peace to all the world! should be included. Peace has been a dominant note in his life. Upon leaving the United States, following his memorable visit in 1936, Pope Pius XII, then Cardinal Secretary of State, said, I am leaving America with gratitude toward all with whom I have come in contact and with prayer that Almighty God may continue to bless this great nation, that its citizens may be happy and prosperous, and that the in- Huence of the United States may always be exerted for the promotion of peace among peoples. May the Angels of Peace bring strength and courage to this pastor angelicus , Pius XII, the Bishop of Rome pictured here with the Most Reverend James E. Kearney, Bishop of Rochester. 3 ,xx iat. f ,S X sss ffffsf '15 Ps - -'--- is I 9 Xl e' I Q l XVXJXSQ XC y . f fl llxhx ' VJ. X.f 1. ,f 'M' xl.. x, Q-' HM X f X, Q f .x A f- ' Y, fm X Xxx.
