De Morte You may wonder why a girl of fifteen should find any interest in death but th t ill be m ultimate end I feel that I have every reason to be interested as a w y in it and have done quite a bi,t of research in this field. My findings are not d till quite complete as it was not possible to go very deeply into the subject an s write this essay. But, here are the results of my research for all that it may be worth to you. Ever since Adam choked on an apple people have been dying and have lived through it. What is death but a parting of the soul from the body? The soul still lives. People hardly ever think of things beyond death. They think that one dies and that's that--no hereafter. I think that if I belived that, I would up d kill self but here we are back on death again. You can't get away from it. an my -- Doctors who have witnessed a great many deaths KI haven'tJ say that they all l into have met few people who were afraid at the very end. They usu y apse a sort of sleep and go quietly to meet their Maker. The causes of death are varied but in all cases the heart stops beating and the body is deprived of life. The body which has been pampered and powdered for innumerable years and cared for like something holy and lasting is put into a wooden box to rot and decay. No cure has as yet, been found for this ailment, but science, Scott says, by constant 'research' is fast approaching the day when there will be no death, no God, no Human Race. Gloria Brocato, '52 lk if It It if lk It It The Mighty West Old Josh of the mighty western plain, Used to tell how men waren't sane. When they ud hit that yeller rust, The stuff the old west called gold dust. The boys ud climb their mighty steeds. Ready to fight, die and bleed. One ud shoot, and the other ud fall Until there nearly warn't nobody left at all. Now Sam McKee was a toten a gun And Jed Lovelaw was the suspected one. ent to see if Jed was around Sam w . When two shots rang out and he hit the ground. Now poor Sam is a layin' in his grave And the town his guns, they did save. Sam McKee has a tombstone made of stone And his marker a simple skeleton bone. Genevieve Leland, ' 53 All of a sudden it's here, It comes but once a year, It's gay and sunny, Happy and funny. Sometimes it's hot, Other times it's not. The God-Man Cruclfied Many long hours were spent in the garden, Asking mercy for all His brethren. But He is condemned to die, For sins of man, by those who govern. He is really an innocent man, One who is all-loving, but always just. Yes, all of our sins condemned him, And He was scourged for sins of lust. He not only died on the cross to redeem us. But by this sacrifice, He gained for us grace. He was helped a little, on the way to calvary, by Simon and Veronica, wiping His Blessed Face. Anonymous springtime 'Tis full of smells That bring gleeful yells. People go to the shore To ride in boats galore. The robins come back, That is a fact, Gay springtime is here. Marilyn Vallely, '55

A Squirrel Decides A little squirrel looked down from a tree, He decided that the world, he would see. Off on his journey, He started to go, But his feet were tired, so traveling was slow. And in the city. . . I finally made it! The traffic is awful! O, I just hate it! A car whizzed by him, Just missing his tail, The honking horn scared him, and the squirrel turned pale. Pm going home, The squirrel said, 'Right back home, To my soft warm bed. Margaret Kihm, ' 52 Illiillllllili Dream As I sit by my bedroom window this night, And look at the stars shining bright I begin to think about the good God. Who made the sun, the moon, and the sod. And as I contemplate on this subject so vast I fall into a slumber and dream at last. I dream of the goodness of a God so great, Who sent His beloved Son to open Heaven's gate, To open the gates through which all may pass, His Son who is offered by us in the Mass. And as I ponder more on my wonderous dream, I see graces flowing in one endless stream, Flowing into the hearts of the meek and the just There to help all overcome sin and lust. And as my dream slowly fades away, I can hear the voices of angels at play, And away in the distance the saints are all singing, And so the Heaven's with God's praises are ringing. Margaret Murphy, 51 The True Cross A cross is standing on a hill So very crudely madeg It's standing everlasting still Around it sunlight fades. It's hard and rugged and on the bar His blood in scarlet glows. And as the earth of light turns dark And whirls of wind begin to blow, Christ dies. John and Mary standing there Beneath the cross so sad, And soft her whispers are and low, They took from me my only Son l-le died for men today. And though so many years have gone Men still walk blindly by, Oh, may their eyes be raised to see Salvation, Christ upon the tree. Barbara Metzen, ' 51
