Confinement I, like a cat padding around its cage try to stretch the inches of my world into feet, the feet into miles, the miles into forever . . . Cathie Mlot respond to the glow- deep-down-inside that pushes it's way up ,... fighting for air, and feeling it's way, until it can stand up on it's own two feet and say ,... hey, it's great to be alive! You know, it's funny, fl mean funny peculiar, not funny ha-haj how He seemed to think of just about everything ,... He made the earth 'cause it was nice and solid and He made something called gravity so people would stay put, and anyway, He figured it was as nice a place as any to start out with, the earth, that is ,... And He made the grass, and trees, and leaves green, instead of red, or purple, or fuschia, which would have been an awful strain on the eyes ,... And He made teeny little plants for the little fish to eat, and bigger fish to eat the little fish ,... and He made fishermen to eat the bigger fish ,... And He made the dirt so the worms could have something to hide in ,... away from the hands of inexperienced fishermens' sons ,... And He made the sun stay up longer in the summer so people could eat watermelon and so that they could have a chance to get the sweet-perfumed wetness all over their faces ,... And He made the night so a boy and a girl could walkxhand-in-hand, sharing the night-sounds and the whispering sparkles of the stars ,... And He made laughter for those times when you climb a tree or try on your mother's pointy heels and dress ,... and He made tears for when you fall from the tree or when you tear your mother's good dress and she comes in and asks you just what were you doing in her closet anyway? And He made death because He figured people needed a good rest from getting- up-early's and from going-to-bed-late's and from partying's and businessing's and rushing's and loving's and hurrying's and from joking's and crying's and being- aIone's and being-together's and from just peopling ,... And the grass still grows and the fishermen still fish ,... and people still pick flowers to put in their vases for Sunday dinners ,... 'cause that's what He made them for, anyway.
