Hutchins, a graduate of the University of Maine, entered the Navy as a Naval Aviation Cadet in 1936, Following flight training at Pensacola, Fla., he received his commission and designation as a Naval aviator in 1937. Prior to World War ll he served as a Patrol Plane Commander with Patrol Squadrons 2 and 12. In 1940 he was released to inactive duty for only two months. That same year he was recalled to active duty and ordered to NAS Scfuantum, Mass., as a flight instructor. In 1941 and earlyNl942 he served at the Naval Air Station, Da las, Texas. Shortly after the outbreak of orld War Il he was assigned to Patrol Squadron 53 in the South Atlantic Area as a patrol plane commander and s uadron gunnery officer.
