, Wendell Gray Switzer was born in Topeka, Kansas, on September 30, 1898. He attended Washburn College in Topeka for gr two years before his appointment in 1917 to the U, S. Naval Academy, He graduated in Iune, 1920, with the Class of 1921 and received his commission as Ensign. f In Iune of 1923 he went to the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida for fliglit instruction, and was designated a Naval , Aviator on lanuary ll, 1924. On May 8, 1924 he married Miss Anna Lamar of Pensacola, Florida. i Between 1924 and the beginning of World War 11, he served in many biliots including all types of aircraft squadrons at f sea, and ashore in the Bureau of Aeronautics and the Naval Air Training Command. During World War II he Cgmrnqrtdgd the USS TANGIER, a seaplane tender, during the Solomons Campaign, the USS TRIPOL1, an escort carrier engaged in anti-submarine warfare in the Atlantic, and the USS WASP, a large aircraft carrier operating with Task Force 58 against the lapanese homeland, ln December 1946 he was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral to date from luly 25. 1944. Since World War ll, Rear Admiral Switzer has served as ,, Chief of Staff and Aide to Commander Air Force, Pacific , ft' 'A 7 ,, Fleet, Commander, Naval Ordnance Test Station, lnyokern, tar' ..,rfwLr,f,if-4--, uf ww. wen,- a, -4 f' ' California, Commander Carrier Divisions SlX and SIXTEEN and as Chief of Staff and Aide to Commander in Chief, Atlantic Fleet, On 3U Iuno 1953, Rear Admiral Switzer assumed his present duties of Chief of Naval Air Technical Training with headquarters at the Naval Air Station, Memphis, Tennessee. His official address is 284 West Gonzalez Street, Pensa- cola, Florida. Rear Admiral and Mrs. Switzer have two sons W5 and a daughter: Lt. Iohn L. Switzer, who graduated from the l U. S. Captain Ioseph C. Clifton, USN, one of the Navy's fightingest and most colorful aviators, became Commanding Officer of the Vast Naval Air Station, Memphis, Tennessee, on Iuly 8, 1954, Known for his forceful and energetic manner and often respectfully referred to as Iumping loo, Captain Clifton has a distinguished World War ll combat record, l-le received numerous awards, including the Legion of Merit, three Distinguished Crosses, and the British Distinguished Service Order for his outstanding service during the last war. During the Korean action, Captain Clifton was Commanding Officer of Air Transport Squadron Eight of Berlin Airlift fame. Air Transport Squadron Eight, under his command, along with other Military Air Transport Service components, poured critical materials Clfld personnel into Korea in an unprecedented around-the-clock operation, which made aerial transport history. A confidant of high ranking officers in the Pacific, including Admiral Arthur Radford, present Chairman of the Ioint Chiefs of Staff, Cflpiain Clifton also served as a trouble shooter during the Korean action. A native of Paducah, Kentucky, Captain Clifton entered the Naval Academy in l9Z6, and graduated with the class of l930. After brief service with the fleet, he attended flight school at Pensacola, Florida, In addition to his combat service, he has distinguished peace time service aboard numerous ships and stations. Captain Clifton, one of the most sought after speakers in the mid-South area, reported to the Naval Air Station, Memphis, from the v .v Armed Forces War College, 8 Iuly l954. I- E.
