ssf's'. TECHNICAL THRESHOLD The only Class P aviafion school currenfly in operalion, fhis School is 'lhe lrindergarfen of Naval Air Technical Training-fha lowesf sfep of ifs five levels of educafion. The Airman School is fhe preliminary, or preparafory, course of insfrucfion for all fufure aviafion fechnical rafingsg fhe foundafion of all enlisfed careers in Naval Aviafion. Here, fhe newcomer is provided wifh fhe background necessary for 'Thorough comprehensive developmenf. The aviafion recruif is furnished an insighi' info fhe organizafion of fhe Flying Navy. He becomes familiar wifh fhe rudimenfs of aviafion seamanship, and is infroduced fo fhe basic slzills of every aviafion rafing. He receives fhe primary principles of survival equipmenf, passes specified swimming fesfs, and, mosf imporfanf of all, is given a correlafed series of screening and rafe- selecfion examinafions and inferviews. Naval Air Technical Training spends fhe firsf eighf weelrg of ifs previous fraining fime in schooling fhe novice Airmen in Navy fradifions, odd iargon, and fechnical funcfions in order fo ascending emphasis. Before an airman sfeps from fhis Class P school info fhe basic, or Class A, course of his fufure aviafion specialfy, he musf spend many a long hour on fhe rudimenfs of mafhemafics, layouf, physics, fheory of flighf, engines, aerology, gunnery, fhe dif-dif- dabs of fundamenfal elecfronics, and a generous dose of fhe ufili- 1afion of hand fools. The Airman School fashions him info fhe rough frameworlr of a seagoing aerial sailor. He says lcnoclr off fhe chaffer when he means shuf up, shove off when he means leave, calls ihe floor fha declr, fells you fo bear a hand insfead of hurry up, and describes fhings as squared away when fhey are in order. From 5:00 a.m. reveille fo l0:00 p.m. faps, he fakes orders and gets IHH9 fhanlzs. He learns nof fo resenf fhe perempfory nafure ofucom- mands, and comes fo see fhaf seeming brusqueness and milifary efficiency go fogefher. As he sheds fhe lasf layer of civilian slrin af fhe Airman School, fhe newcomer fo Naval Aviafion finds his exisfence preffy com- forfable, There are fennis courfs, swimming pools, a golf driving range, and numerous ofher recreafional facilifies. Oufside his hard-driven hours he has no responsibilifies, and his pay provideS adequafe funds for brief periods ashore -Safurday nighfs and Sundays. Milifary formalifies are sfringenfly sfressed, buf are reduced 'fo minimums. Confacfs are cordial and courfeous in lceeping Wllh modern Navy policies. The fhermosfafs confrolling fhis afmosphere are officers, enlisfed insfrucfors, and supervisors, painsfalcingly selecfed from Fleef-experienced personnel, who are charged wif.h fhe vifal responsibilify for running These raw ingofs fhrough fhIS firsl heaf of fhe crucible of craffsmen. The grades compiled by each frainee during fhe Airman Sch.00l course of insfrucfion are carefully sfudied and weighed 69a'nSi Qualificafion Sheefs which lisf fhe minimum sfandards required for enfry info each rafing. This analysis is fhen compared wifh 'lhe fplll' preferences fhe man himself has expressed af four specified POIUT5 during fhe course. If preferencee, apfifude and abilify iibe, H16 airman is senf fo 'lhaf Class A school of his choice. Ofherwise, he is assigned fo fhe second or even fhe fhird specialfy he has selecfed.
