Page 18 I THE GU S HER ADMINISTRATION By ELIZABETH CATH ER Natrona County High School has seen great changes in the past fifteen years. This institution has grown from a small, unequipped school into a large and important factor in Natrona County. In 1920 the present Iunior High building was built, and the high school students proudly moved from the basement of the library into this S4-0,000 structure. Many peoplethought this building placed too far from the center of town, for it was on the very edge of what then constituted our city. Others feared the building was too large and would never be fully used. At that time the student body consisted of two hundred and three boys and girls. Seventeen teachers were employed to teach them. The military corps was made up of seventy-five cadets. The citizens of Casper, ever anxious to further the education of their chil- dren, soon realized the inadequacy of their high school building. It. was then that they entered upon one of the city's greatest projects-the present high school building. Many pessimists shook their heads sadly when the new building was actually begun, for it was to cost approximately 3,800,000 But it was certainly worth it, for words cannot express the beauty and grandeur of the structure that resulted. It was constructed on the Gothic plan of architecture. The boys 'and girls will never be able to show their apprecia- tion to the taxpayers. Gradually the necessary details were added. In 1930, a pool was built in order that the students might have the chance to enjoy its privileges. In the summer of 1931, the new 375,000 gymnasium was begun. It was started in the face of a serious depression and it must have taken courage and de- ment, however, for it brought the State Basketball Tournament, which proved to be a paying proposition, to our city. Today the eleven thousand boys and girls who attend Natrona County High School have access to many helpful departments. Auto' mechanics has been emphasized in the last few years. There is a complete course in cabinet making and metal works. Home economics is carried for the girls. The taxpayers' greatest compensation may be that they have the sincere appreciation of all the high school students for the unusual opportunities afforded them. This year the faculty has cooperated willingly by taking salary cuts. Mr. Hicks is doing the work of two men most successfully. The daily routine is carried on without friction. Surrounded by the beauty of the building and the uniformity of the class rooms, the students are learning to become the good and honest citizens that the country needs. Q Education is imperative. The people of Casper may be complimented on the fact that they realized that and have done their utmost to forward it. Year after year the classes leave the portals of our school, each succeeding class larger than the last. They leave to take their places in the world. But they may well owe their success to their high school training. Our high school stands as the most magnificent gift of the people to the youth of Casper. o ---- 1933 ---- o
