li f! H FOREWORD B EHIND the prestige and power of the SjLpreme Court of the United States lies a story of the gradual growth of a legal system now nearly a thousand years old — a story iv e have attempted to depict in the following pages . The illustrations — mark- ing the various divisions of the book — and the material used in conjunction therewith , have been assembled to portray outstanding incidents in the development of the courts from the time of William the Conqueror . The panel below consists of three sections and contains in the first a replica of a page from the original Domesday Book ; in the second part there is portrayed a scene from the trial of Charles the First in Westminster Hall; the remaining portion showing a page from Chief Justice Little- ton’s famous book on Tenures, published in A. D. 1481, and incidently the first book on English law ever printed. Fee fimple.
